8:58 This was one of my favorite moments. It's subtle, but a brilliant moment of characterization. Heather fires the gun once, cries out in shock, then continues to fire. That little moment fully pulled me into her mind. Because Heather is 17 years old. She's never fired a gun. And guns are LOUD. They have kickback. The act of firing a gun is violent and scary, especially in a moment of real threat. She doesn't scream like a horror movie waif, she shouts in shock before emptying the mag into the monster. That was realistic. Empathetic. Human. And right then, I was sold on Heather's character. That she was a human with courage. Not fairy-tail courage, but real courage. The courage to realize a situation is do or die, and then set her feet, square up, and act. Not fearlessly, because the absence of fear isn't courage. Courage is retaining a sense of pragmatism and capability in the face OF fear. That the road ahead was going to have plenty of terrifying and unexpected things, and it wouldn't be some stoic knight or superhero reacting to them, but a human with courage. God I love this game so much, and Heather is STILL my favorite gaming protagonist of all time. Almost 20 years later, and she hasn't been surpassed.
i couldn't agree more! heather as a character still feels incredibly authentic and genuine, even all of these years later. not only did they do a great job writing a female character (especially during a time when female characters were more... well, you already know!) but they really captured what it was like to be a teen girl. i too was a sarcastic and angsty teenager when i played this game, so it was all too easy to imagine behaving much of the same way as she did during the games events. i've seen some criticisms regarding the way she reacts to everything around her, that her responses are "unrealistic" due to how annoyed and over-it-all she appears. but to me, it's perfectly teenaged of her! i remember trying really hard to cover up any doubts, fears, and anxiety i experienced when i was that age, with all of the sarcasm and brattiness teen me could muster. her moment in the elevator shows how everything is really affecting her, and just how much it's affecting her, too.
It provides such an interesting and stark contrast to James, who, after his initial shock and confusion, proceeds to unhesitatingly bludgeon the Lying Figure to death with a wooden plank

I'm impressed that some dude with an emulator got this beautiful result. I wish the modding guys do something similar to the PC version. Reshading is the key.
The PC port only needs the blur effects on cutscenes and softshadows to look like PS2, because the textures and others effects are improved, and the missing Harry and Lisa lines are already restored by mods
The REAL REAL HD COLLECTION is the PC version modded with Silent Hill 3 PC Fix by Steam006, SH3PC Sound Fixer by Psycho-A, and XInput Plus. You don't get the extra outfits, but you get 60 FPS and can tweak shadow res, fog complexity, DOF res, inventory bkg res, tweak the FOV, and put up to 8x MSAA. I play it at 4k 60 FPS with the aforementioned res tweaks bumped up and with 8x MSAA. And you can turn off film grain, which I did.
The extra outfits are unnecesary, the UFO ending needs the sailor moon one, which is already on the game, also PC port improved few effects on certain scenes, like the blood wall with fire
The fact that you played this on Arch Linux grants you a wise man award. I'm not a fan of so much noise (possibly due to the upscaling?), the upscaled DOF, and these shadows; especially at the beginning, the color filter kinda changes the atmosphere too much, but you did an amazing job!
Silent Hill 2 is arguably the best in the series, Silent Hill 3 and the original for example are contenders, but Heather/Cheryl is my favorite Silent Hill protagonist, sorry James.
I'm running your settings but games looks super dark, even with brightness pumped to 7 in-game any tips? I was running PC version, but the self-shadows on the faces/bodies in cutscenes were way to broken/clippy for me. Your method is better, but I'm limited to 2k instead of 4k(PC) despite a 8700k + 1080Ti haha.
Must be an issue related to the video capture or processing but the levels are crushed (both blacks and whites), meaning it's losing detail in dark and very bright areas that would otherwise be there. Or you could say too much contrast. Other than that it looks pretty good, I admit that.
That's debatable, I have silent hill 3 for the PC it works perfectly I have no issues with it, runs at (4096x2160) widescreen issues are fixed, shadows are fixed and the depth of field are fixed with a simple download, Check out my video.
sh3proxy fixes lots of issues present in the pc port. but the flaws are still pretty much present, even if you compare the graphics with the original PS2 version. The depth of field looks way too soft in comparison with the PS2, the noise filter makes the shadows look gray, the colors look desaturated and dull (mainly because the PC port doesn't render all the postprocessing filters that it should), transparent textures don't render well (if there's something that the PS2 hardware excels at, is at rendering transparent textures. just compare the hair of heather or the beard of Douglas on the PS2 with the PC footage... or the rain drops in the car trip scene; the bloody walls in the mirror room, etc), and sometimes the shadows go crazy if you upscale their resolution too much. Graphic wise, PCSX2 renders this game way better than the PC port... now, I admit that having 60fps, shorter load screens and an improved flashlight effect are really nice features :P But other than that, Konami could've done a much better job with their PC port.
You're right, I didn't even notice ha. So how do you properly play sh3 via emulation, I used it and it has some issues with shadows? some other issues as well, I would like to try it out.

hmm... AMD GPUs are famous for having trouble with OpenGL. Maybe you can try to use the Direct3D 11 renderer instead, and put the CRC Hack Level to Full (although i'm not sure you'll get the same results)
Read the comment I gave to RAINAT. Also the PC port has the same textures as the PS2 version. I already extracted the textures files from both versions and they were exactly the same. (there were a few textures on the PC port that were artificially upscaled for some reason, but they were just as blurry as the originals)
hm alright, but even then I see a few graphical things in this I dont like. too much screen fuzz going on for the HD resolution and DoF effect also odd in a few scenes. plus on PC you can scale up the shadows res to a very high amount maybe a few things off, but the game always looked stunning to me on PC
Oh that's true, the DOF setting in the PC version is amazing, can't argue with that :) But the shadow resolution in the PCSX2 emulator is pretty much the same as the PC port, specially if you play in 4K. It all comes down to personal tastes and preferences. The PC version obviously has some advantages, like faster loading times, better widescreen support, the ability to change the status screen and DOF resolutions... But it also has issues rendering transparent textures, the hair in the characters don't look as natural as in the PS2 version, some particle effects look incredibly pixelated (like the blood on the walls, the rain, etc)...
