- This video follows the building and completion of Moebius Models' Ranger from the movie Interstellar. This shows examples of using a wash and pastels as well as other tips.As someone noted, the nose was inaccurately painted. A huge oversight on my part which I will be correcting.
This is the link to the video that helped me most for constructing the base: • How to Create Blast Cr...
Love this ship. The windows came out “stellar”!
Thanks
@@InterstellarModeler you’re quite welcome. Seeing kit possibilities, inspires others! 🌞🙏
Love the uncomplicated modelling approach.. amazed at the great results you constantly achieve
Thank you Dean. I appreciate the kind words.
The built-up model is stunning. Good call on the extra weathering, it really brings a lot of extra detail to the piece! - Trevor
I'm so glad I found this model and video. Great job and AWESOME model!
Very happy you built this one. I've been thinking about buying this kit. As always, the final build looks great
Hi David...thanks for the comment. Apparently this kit has become a rarity. My son and I loved the movie so that's what prompted be to buy and build the kit.
@@InterstellarModeler yes! I love this movie as well. I plan to follow your build to the end. I'm going to try and make a base where this ship landed on that planet covered in water.
Excellent work on this.
Making me think more about getting one of these for myself
Great job again. I learn something new every time I watch one of your build videos. Keep up the great work!
+arvison64 Thank you
The tool is an old-fashioned drafting pen. I used one when I went to college 30+ years ago, to learn mechanical drafting and design work.
You know, way back before there was a computer sitting on everyone's desk, or in their pocket?
If you're drawing with it, you can set the width of the line by turning the screw on the side and moving the points closer together or further apart.
Interesting tidbits about that tool. thanks for your comment.
Very nice build! When I made mine I didn't think of cutting out the windows. I painted the windows black, then masked them all off with masking tape (huge pain in the ass), painted the model white, then I did an opposite mask of what I did before (another huge pain in the ass) to paint just the window panels with Tamiya X-22 for a super gloss finish. I have to say that your windows came out better than mine!
Great job! Thanks for posting, wasn't aware Interstellar had models kits.
The windows turned out great and I love the base!
Terrific! I love how your base turned out, and that Tamiya smoke looks quite interesting on the video, perhaps more interesting than a normal black.
+The KitBase Yes...it's a nice effect although not as evident here since the interior of the ship was painted black.
Looks fantastic excellent build 👍
Thanks
Beautiful job, my friend!
WE MUST SEE MORE OF THE MOEBIUS MODELS!
Moebius models was actually sold to Pegasus back in 2018. They had mentioned at the time that Moebius would continue. We'll see how that goes. I think they did a great job with their kits so hopefully we will see more in the future.
Exceptional work! Looks really nice!
Great build mate ! I loved the finished result.
This is so good! Can't believe I just found this video!!
Thank you
Very nice job on the model the base really make everything come together Great Job.
Dang, I should have bought this kit when I had the chance, it looks like a lot of fun :) I've got to learn to make that a habit, military kits will be around forever, but licenced sci-fi is more exclusive. I really like what you've done on this build, especially with the windows. I knew that this kit didn't have any, and the clear sytrene really adds a lot of dept and great effect. Posted on that base with the darker colors was great it really looks like it was in the movie.
Just on a sidenote Interstellar was filmed here in Alberta, the scenes at the house were just a few hours away from where I live, and there are some scenes towards the end of the film with Jessica Chastain and Topher Grace driving through a town that's Fort Macleod, and you can see briefly in the background the Empress theatre. They also filmed the new Ghost Busters movie there as well.
Thanks....my son and I really enjoyed the film so i bought the model for that reason. Never knew the kit would become so rare. Hopefully they’ll re-release it at some point.
@@InterstellarModeler That is always the hope, but licence fees are becoming terribly expensive, it makes me wonder if we'll have themed model kits in the future without them costing a lot.
@@rebelsatcloudnine not sure where you stand on 3D printing but there is a model of the Ranger you can print completely detailed and with an interior. Search for the ship on gambody.com
@@InterstellarModeler I haven't been the biggest fan, mostly because of the striations in the plastic, but honestly thanks to You and Lou Dalmaso, I've really become sold on using the Resin 3D printed kits. It opens up a lot of possibilities for the sci-fi crowd.
a fantastic result... i like the smoked selfmade windows and your base turned out very nice..!
Excellent job Oggie! Since you are so close to the event horizon and time passes slower in higher
gravity fields, here on Earth 30 years has passed since your started this project. I might not live to see the next one if you don't come back to Earth! ;-)
Looks great! Wow really nice build and review. I just bought this kit myself and enjoyed the vid dude :)
+Cloverleaf Studios Thanks.....and yep this was a fun kit to work with. Enjoy and thanks again for your kind comments.
The tool that you have to do those panel lines was used by architects and engineering to draw plans and technical drawings. I have used those long time ago in my architectural major in school, the same way you are using it. We were dipping it in ink and draw onto a special paper to do blueprints after. by unscrewing it, we would get thinner or wider lines .
+Sylvain Barbeau Yes exactly....that's how it works. I found it pretty useful here. Thanks
A ruling pen. Thanks for introducing me to it! I might get one and give it a try. Thanks for the video.
Another Great Job! The windows was the reason I did not get this kit. You did awesome the windows and weathering look great. The base rocks...
+Waylow's Workshop Thanks....what really helped was thinning down the plastic from the inside. Made it easier to drill through and to cut away. I spread the work out over a couple of days so it wasn't too bad. I entered the model into a local contest last week and happy to note it took 1st in the scifi category! Thanks for your nice comment. Always appreciate you watching too.
I am glad you won the ship looks great. Thanks for always answering. I am learning as I go so the info really helps. Thanks again
great work, windows look brilliant..
thank you
@@InterstellarModeler I was gonna say stellar work but, thought otherwise.. will subscribe now, thanking you, for thanking me..
Paint give so much work
The glass, even though black on the back side, looks far better than painting the plastic black would have looked. I wonder if the panel lines are too dark though. Makes it look more like a drawing. Maybe a gray (less contrast with the white) might have looked better? Weathering is nice!
Thanks....not quite as dark in person but yes gray would look work too.
@@InterstellarModeler Slowly making my way through your videos. Nice work, and inspiring me to work on something other than model cars ... I do like Sci Fi, and have picked up kits here and there, but have not really finished any of them.
that looks awesome
I used to use a pencil to fill in the panel lines of models.
thanks
Great work!
Really beautiful model... finally was able to obtain one of these... also wondered if anyone knew if the paint job on the Saturn booster in this movie varied from the real Saturns.???
In the movie they seemed to have used a Saturn V, though irl if they were to use a Saturn it would be the Saturn 1B because they only need to get the ranger into low earth orbit. But to my knowledge the paint scheme seems the same.
Another great build Oggie! Would really like to know the name of that pen wash tool!!
+MindlessModelWorks Hi....thanks again for your kind comments. The tool is apparently called a ruling pen.
Excellent job Oggie
Thanks, appreciate the kind compliment
Those gates are huge.
Really great would the 1:44 scale fit in a Airfix Saturn do you think?
+John Leightell Possibly. I saw the smaller module attached to what appeared to be a Saturn rocket last year at Mobieus' Comic Con booth. So yes I think so.
I seen the same picture just with the exception of you. I don't know anyone who has purchased it to find out any different.
AMAZING! Do you build it for selling? I would buy certainly!! excelente job 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks. No I actually dont do commissions but thanks for asking
Wow! Gorgeous!
Thank you, appreciate the kind comment
당신의 디테일한 작업은 최고입니다
thank you
That tool you're using just past the 10min mark is called a ruling pen. I've had one since art school, but never learned how to use it properly for precise line work in graphic design.
+Milé Murtanovski Thanks...yes it worked well here. Someone suggested I try it. Thanks for watching.
Another great episode! One question please? When you "smoked" the windows did you spray the side that was showing or the bottom side? TIA
+Kevin Kilkenny The bottom side. Thanks for your kind comments
Thanks so much for this. What was the color you used with the ruler pen? Did you dip that into the same mixture in your cup or another color? Thanks again!
It was a mix of 80% black, 20% brown approximately. The wash was made using just craft paint and water and it's what I was dipping the pen into. Something you may want to look into as an alternative method.....these products by AMMO MIG. You may need to watch some youtube vids but these are some really good products. I've used some already and they're not difficult to work with. Let me know if you have any other questions. Here's the link and thank you for watching: www.migjimenez.com/en/9-washes
Sorry, one more question: what was the gray primer you used on the hull (paint make and color)? That would be helpful to know. Truly appreciate it.
I used Gray Filler Primer from Duplicolor. My primer of choice these days is the Stynylrez gray primer from Badger. Works real well in your airbrush. It definitely coats evenly and leaves panel lines and surface details intact. Hope that helps, Oggie
Nice job. Now I'm pretty sure i want one but I have a question.... Why did you paint the front totally different than the original model? It is excessively black. Is it another kind of ranger?
+xiatothewerewolf.....OMG you are absolutely correct. This was an oversight. I should have extended the white just a bit more. Too late now but thanks for noticing.
The model should of came with clear parts for the window. Even a single-piece interior would have been nice. :(
Great job on your build.
Thanks. Yeah i to wished it came that way
The windows are not up against the frames. Was it not possible to glue each window separately up to the frames?
No...at least not for me anyway. Too hard to be that exact
I thought I'd like this a lot more, being a big fan of the movie but it just doesn't translate well into a great model. The Space 1999 ship I just watched was so much more impressive which is odd when you think of the gap between when both were designed. But that's not bad reflection on how you made the model, I thought you did a great job. The base came out really well too.
I was thinking about those windows, the effort you went to cutting them out was way beyond anything I'd of done, I'm sure without that work it would have looked way worse but anyway, I was thinking, I do sculpture modeling, those little figurines you mentioned, more like that but bigger than the tiny masterpieces games workshop come up with. For that I use a clay called super sculpey but there's also another that I believe Doll makers favor called Fimo. You see it in craft shops a lot, it comes in little squares and in many colours. The also do a clear clay, I mean one that looks a bit like glass but without any of the lovely optical properties It's more for making eyeballs and such where you want light to pass through some. Now when you put the perspex on, it was set down inside the model so from the top of the model, there's this gap. I wondered if something like that clear fimo could be used in tricky jobs where you want windows but would prefer them to be flush with the outside of the model. You could easily push some clay through and do a clean scrape on one side and boom, one window that might not be as good as real glass, in that you can't see through it properly but would be good enough if you were internally lighting the model and wanted the windows to light up. Just an idea. I'll pop a link to the kind of clay I'm on about here in case its of interest to anyone modeling. www.amazon.co.uk/STAEDTLER-Effect-8020-014-Hardening-Modelling/dp/B0023T3648 UK Amazon there but that's where I live. At least that's the right product name to search in a country of your choice :)
www.garieinternational.com.sg/clay/shop/liquid_pc/killer_6.jpg
this is an example of what it looks like. the outer pool/water bit is the fimo clay
+Clay Mann Wow...that is a very interesting idea Clay. Thank you for the tip. I will pass this onto other model FB and google groups that I belong to. You're correct in that the windows could not be flush with the openings and thus looked recessed instead. I didn't want to even try to cut separate pieces into place so your method would be a cool way to approach this problem.
And thank you for your kind comments. I know the ship's design doesn't appeal to everyone. My son and I really enjoyed this film and part of me wanted to construct this model for that very reason. One of the things that makes it interesting to watch is that the tech all seemed very real. One could conceivably see them using stuff like this someday. Thanks again for your comments, tips and for watching.
Interstellar Modeler
yes that would have been a super hard thing to do cutting each perspex window, I think you did it the best way with one sheet. I also loved the film and I think that's the problem with the model, that it wasn't designed to be a spaceship ala Star Wars models to look cool but really more realistic, like as you say, something that could really exist in a few years time. so it had that mundanity to it. I think I'd grow to like it if I owned the model. I guess its just easy to be super picky here on TH-cam just browsing around lol
Keep up the great work, really enjoy seeing your models.
+Clay Mann Thanks...although someone pointed out that I made a mistake painting the nose. Will have to try and remedy that. Thanks again for all your nice comments.
제도용 잉크팬으로 패널라인 넣기라~와우!
Do you use an airbrush to apply the paint, or did you just brush it on?
Yes it was all applied with an airbrush. Thanks for watching
Oh. So would you recommend I buy an airbrush for this project, or can it still be done with a brush?
An airbrush isn't absolutely necessary for this project but overall it would be a good investment for model building in general. The problem with hand brushing large areas is that you tend to see brush strokes on the surface afterwards and it's not easy to get fine lines either, even when masking. If not an airbrush I'd recommend using Tamyia brand spray paints. They tend to go on very evenly and spray with a finer mist. Use Tamyia brand masking tape too, much less chance for paint to seep underneath it. If you apply the spray paint in light, multiple coats it helps to avoid the bleeding through the edges of the masking tape as well. Brushing is certainly fine for smaller parts. Hope that helps.
Interstellar Modeler Thank you so much, this does help! I have the kit and I'm going to buy the paint today, but how I'm going to paint the model flew right over my head. Thanks again!
You're welcome. Let me know if you have any questions.
awesime
PS .....You had to build an Interstellar Ranger......Because you ARE Interstellar!....... :-)
“There is a moment-“
Been trying to find your line filler applicator can you remember the name of it ??
+John Leightell Hi John.....head to ebay and search for "ruling pen" and you'll see some up for auction. Not expensive at all. You'll see a couple running for about $4.50...that's what I have. Hope that helps.
How do i build the base? The link doesnt work
+TheSebasdesign Sorry about that....I replaced the link. Try it again. Otherwise search for Eons of Battle youtube channel and check out his How to Create a Blast Crater Terrain video. I didn't use his technique for the crater itself but for creating the dirt and rock terrain. Thanks.

WOW Oggie! ...What a AWESOME job... I have learned so much from your builds....Thank you for sharing your craft with the modeling community....As I just completed a Ranger I know as you do, that Cutting out those small windows were a challenge!...The first weathering video of yours that I watched was your next gen cylon raider....If you can check out my Ranger... th-cam.com/video/QbOqYnno_aE/w-d-xo.html Yours...Frank-
Wow that looks amazing! Have you ever considered making the Aegis Gladius from Star Citizen?
Thank you.....I'm not familiar with Star Citizen but looked up images of the Aegis. Cool looking ship. Thanks for watching
Interstellar Modeler Now that I think about it, you seem like you go for the ships with more swooping lines than blocky. The Gladius is kind of a blocky ship so the Retaliator or the Redeemer might suit your style a bit more. Of course, I'm just naming a bunch of ships I like, it's your channel, you should do what you want!
