Having listened to all 3 versions now, I can safely say I thoroughly enjoyed all of them. Though personally Gilmour's is the version I'll always look for.
Sure, if you're looking for something to sound like David Gilmour then this won't. It's Monster Magnet covering a song that meant something to him, and by this very nature you take on a new sound. I like it because it appeals more to my personality type when transferring the emotion of the song.

Unicorn has the best version IMO, and then Gilmore, but damn, once this MM Version picked up and got crunchy... I'm going to have to spin this one again.
As far as I know, Gilmour was in Unicorn when they laid it down... so Gilmour *IS* the original... despite the man's phenomenal success, Gilmour was never good at writing lyrics... so the story is that he formed Unicorn to essentially perform Gilmour solo material, but the other band members wrote the lyrics.
Originally by a band named Unicorn...which was produced by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour..whom did his own version for his solo cd "About Face"..the chain continues. This version is interesting as well....
I want to know-how a band can be so badass in a world of rubbish bands-it pisses me off that this band with there whole abyss of great albums how the fuck could they not be HUGE?-Wait i get it theres a bunch of Fuctards looking for POKEMAN.
Yes! The one album of theirs that got the credit it deserved wasnt nearly their best,if they had started in 1970 they'd be recognized for the legends they are. Thankfully Dave shows no signs of slowing down, quite the opposite actually
Fucking REAL ROCKSTARS*.Boy's You've been my Favorite for over a quarter century, in all this time......Never have you disappointed me. Not Ever. I LOVE YOU!!!!
Well the point of the cover is to maintain a balance of keeping the original flair of the song while putting your own style in it. I think these guys were successful with that. There are certainly worse covers and there may be better covers, but this is a good song.
A good song is a good song... Unicorn's version was very well done and enjoyable. David Gilmour's version was bluesy, soulful, and just possessing of that emotional intensity that volume and heaviness just can't match. Monster Magnet's version is interesting and a valiant effort to make the song their own, so kudos to them. I say again, a good song is a good song...
I've been imagining an ideal version, and haven't found anything that's all that close. What's so damn disappointing about Gilmour's version is how tame the guitar is, like they had a shitty producer who kept saying, "No, no, no. Tone it down, this is a low-key number." Crock. This rendition is closer to ideal. I still like Gilmour's voice. The instrumentals played it way too safe.
@TimmyOswald the person is either liked or dislike, nobody can bring anyone to fame except themselves.......people don't like others because they are told too, they have talent, 'nuff said
So I always thought that the dude from Monster Magnet look like Gibby Haynes from Butthole SurfersAlso I really like the unicorn version the original cheers for the upload though.
Monster magnet always makes me think of my brother, we used to ride around listening to them so much. But he shot him self.. guess he blew his only chance away too.
Haha, Gilmour really did justice to the song. I'm on the fence about this version. It's definitely got an edge to it. Maybe Metallica should give it a try. Hey, if it doesn't work out, at least you'll appreciate Gilmour's version even more! :)
This version drops the chorus " never vvas there an ansvver vvithout..." It's still a good unicorn cover though. I like Monster Magnet but in this case I think Gilmours version is the more sorrovvfull, as its supposed to be a sad song. Still I'd give it 4 and 1/2 outof 5
Interesting version. Too bad they blew off the middle section of the song that goes" And ever was there an answer..." But they've got good taste in covering it, though I prefer Unicorn's original recording.
Gilmour played it way way too safe with the guitar, like, "Oh, can't be sounding like Floyd too much on this." Even though he found a single song that lyrically sums up most of Floyd's catalog. :P

Gilmour's is better. Dave changed some words, omitted others. Hard to say if he is giving homage or just finding something he could sell. Huge Magnet fan though. Liked this track more before I heard Gilmour's.
I like Monster Magnet however only one person can do this song and that guy is Mr. David Gilmour. Great effort though. Still would give it 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
My favorite voice in rock n roll.

This is one of my favorite David Gilmore songs... Actually, I believe Unicorn did the original These guys definitely do it justice ... Great song.
This is my favorite version of the three that I have heard. This song really hits home ✌️🕉️

It was a cover (interpretation) for Gilmore too

Wyndorf is cool as fuck, therefore, anything he does is cool as fuck. This version is Rock solid.
I grew up with and wore out the David Gilmour cassette version. This is a GREAT cover that reinvented the tune for me.
Unicorn has the best version IMO, and then Gilmore, but damn, once this MM Version picked up and got crunchy... I'm going to have to spin this one again.
Omg just heard this today, killer!
A band called Unicorn did this song first in 76, the Gilmore covered it in 78. I just discovered this version
This was removed from Spotify! :(
Why u Think?
No idea. Deals between Spotify and the labels usually mandate this kind of things. A shame none the less...
Great Song!!!
Yea...this will surely do.

I stand corrected. Ken Baker wrote this song.
listened to unicorn and Gilmore's version. I like monsters much better than the both put together!!!
I think all are different and good. It´s just way much more heavier than all.

4 and 1/2 of ouf 10. Very weak, doesn't do the song any justice. Amateur.
DG does it best IMO
Interesting version. Too bad they blew off the middle section of the song that goes" And ever was there an answer..." But they've got good taste in covering it, though I prefer Unicorn's original recording.
Well the guitar on Gilmour's version is naturally better, but this version rocks hard, my favourite now
David Gilmour rules.
Gilmours cover takes it all the way.
Obviously, his cover IS going to always blow the rest out of the water. But really, as far as covers go this is pretty good.
Gilmour played it way way too safe with the guitar, like, "Oh, can't be sounding like Floyd too much on this." Even though he found a single song that lyrically sums up most of Floyd's catalog. :P
It's a unicorn cover

David Gilmore wrote this and plays it on his 1st solo album. That version is best. It is nice to hear it covered by these guys.
no he didn't he produced it with the band unicorn, then covered it on his album later
and by wear out the cassette, i mean i played it so much i ruined it.
