      It's crazy how the entire Resistance went from around 1000 people and an entire starfleet at the time of the Battle of Starkiller Base, to 400 during the First Order's chase across the Galaxy, to around 30 survivors on a battered Corellian freighter after Crait.
      They are also similar to the Rebel Alliance when you look surface level, but when you dig deeper, you realise they are not a coalition made up of different planetary governments and unified rebel cells, more just a cheap, underfunded guerrilla-warfare militia group that's supposed to take the place of the New Republic's army.

    • @CABRALFAN27
      @CABRALFAN27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The thing is, though, the New Republic weren't being attacked. A lot of the Senators had grown complacent with the fall of the Empire, and didn't see the First Order as a threat because, well, they didn't want to. The few that did see the writing on the walls were fighting a losing battle in the Senate, which lead to some of them, chief among them Leia, after her political career was ruined by the revelation that she was Darth Vader's daughter, formed the Resistance.
      They were only able to get token funding from the New Republic (For example, their flagship, the Raddus, was only given to them because the New Republic was about to decommission it), however, and even though they might've been starting to come around to the idea that another war was imminent in the end, the revelation evidently came too late. Hopefully Episode IX has the Resistance link up with whatever remnants there are of the New Republic navy, and bring them into the Resistance for the final fight.

    • @anonamouseanonamouse5443
      @anonamouseanonamouse5443 6 ปีที่แล้ว +98

      Jordan Gustafson well not really, the rebel’s became the new republic, but because of the new republics inability to decide to use their military, the resistance was formed for defence, because even though the new republic has control of every old rebel military force vehicle and weapon, they were so split and took so long to decide there was no point to use that as an actual military. So it’s more like rebels became new republic, new republic became too powerful for their own good, resistance was formed, then new republic was decimated.

    • @Ampwich

      Guess we'll never get any New Republic action....

    • @jdm4087
      @jdm4087 6 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Sort of. The backstory between RoTJ and TFA is covered in the books and comics. I understand why they didn't bother explaining in Episode 7 and 8, but I think there's some legit and believable reasoning.
      To elaborate more on the comment by Mastechno Techman. Both the Rebels and Empire were severely weakened due to the aftermath of the Battle of Jakku. Both sides saw heavy losses. The Empire was split into multiple Imperial remnants ran by different officers much like how there were individual Rebel cells before they all came together to form the Rebel Alliance.
      Eventually some of the Imperial remnants agreed to the Galactic Concordance and Military Disarmament. In short, the Galactic Concordance was a peace treaty that ended the Galactic Civil War while the Military Disarmament was a law passed by the New Republic that severely limited the operations and size of the New Republic's military by 90%, so the New Republic's military was more of a defense force. They did this to show an effort and apply what they preached, which was showing the values of democracy, peace, and showing good faith towards the Imperial star systems and planets.
      This obviously backfired because not every Imperial remnant cells agreed to this. The ones that disagreed managed to escape to the Unknown Regions of space, which allowed them decades of time to prepare for another war. They eventually became the First Order. The reason why the First Order got so powerful was because of corruption in the New Republic and underground business deals, which companies built weapons, ships, etc for the First Order. A lot of star systems and planets that were loyal to the Galactic Empire remained loyal to the First Order.
      By the time the First Order started to become public, it was too late. The New Republic was too divided and corrupt to do anything, so Leia and a few others had to form the Resistance. The Resistance, like stated in this video, was smaller than the Rebels.

    • @jordangustafson1365
      @jordangustafson1365 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      JDM408 wow, nice job. This makes sense, but personally I think that concept is kind of dumb. The fact that the republic survived the Clone Wars and the Galactic Civil War yet were not able to come up with a working system.

    • @Remediast
      @Remediast 6 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Jordan Gustafson The Republic from the Clone Wars is different from the New Republic after the Galactic Civil War. The Republic in the Clone Wars did not survive. It was destroyed by the Empire. The New Republic was formed after that peace treaty but also failed and the First Order destroyed it. You can also see that one has "New" in it and one does not showing that they are from different eras.

      Rev BladeZ I guess I agree, but like, damn. We should have gotten something our of the New Republic. Maybe a massive civil war between them.
      One faction is going crazy over the possibility of the Republic turning into the Empire again, and choosing to have just a small defense force, because a large military is where it all started. A new Old Republic.
      Another believing the Empire (First Order) is rising in the Unknown Regions, and they need an army to defend themselves. The Resistance.
      Another is a pacifist side, that wants no army, and wants to solve everything with peace. The actual New Republic.
      Another is imperialistic, and believes that an army is the only way to bring order to the galaxy. A new Empire.
      And the last is a group of people that are tired of the corruption of the Republic, Empire, and now the New Republic, and want to split and solve this problem themselves. A new CIS-like faction.
      And they all just end up creating 5 armies and just start shooting at eachother.
      But Episode 7 came and shattered all of that.

      Yes that's the official party line. Stop and actually think about that. You are trying to govern an entire galaxy and yet you have your ENTIRE star fleet in one solar system?! No navy in the history of the known universe has ever been in that situation. Pearl Harbor is about the most devastating loss for a fleet in history, yet their were ships defending the East Coast, there were ships on maneuvers, there was a ship being refitted in the state of Washington. By the very nature of the need to have some sort of coast guard in the Galactic Republic you could not possibly concentrate your starfleet to that extent in the imperial capital. Was the new Republic completely unaware of the New Order? Did they really deploy ZERO ships to the boarder? You're not just talking 'we have cut the defense' budget here. You are talking about incompetence on an amazingly epic and totally unbelievable scale.

The NR army was probably just there to stop pirates and small scale terrorists. And they may have demilitarized because after the empire was gone there was no large scale threat. Their military is just like that if the republic before the clones. Of course that’s just my speculation

    7:50 Wait... the First Order took over the Galaxy with... ten thousand troops? Are you fucking kidding me? Does anyone writing this stuff have ANY sense of scale? Ten thousand is so few you could barely hold a real life small country, or a big city. It's a single army division... barely.
    I mean, I get that they have a big fleet and are scary and all that shit, but there comes a point where sheer fucking numbers come into play. You can't garrison a galaxy with only ten thousand men!

      @SYLOStarWars 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Check my pinned comment. This video was made before the updated canon regarding the First Order numbers. The Sequel Trilogy canon is always in constant update and Lucasfilm corrected that after they realized how silly only ten thousand troops was. • @SYLOStarWars

    CORRECTION: Due to this video being released before The Last Jedi, the reference of The First Order only having 10,000 troops after Starkiller is now no longer canon. The actual number of First Order troops has been corrected in my latest Empire vs First Order video. However, regardless of this short reference, it still doesn't detract at all of how tiny the Resistance army was compared to the Rebel army (who was still tackling the Empire, a much larger faction than the First Order).

    Short Version: The Rebels are...well, Rebels fighting over political issues. The Resistance are more like WWII resistance movements like the French Maquis, Tito's partisans, and the Polish Home Army all fighting foreign invasion and occupation.
    Long Version: The difference is not so much who they are as who they faced. The Rebellion faced an obvious enemy in the Galactic Empire. Until the destruction of the Hosnian System, no appreciable number of people believed the First Order to be a threat. This governed the sizes of the factions. Another difference is their self-perception. As the Oscar Issac quote in the video mentioned, the resistance is inherently defensive and more military-minded than the Rebellion which was explicitly political. The Galactic Civil War was exactly that: a Civil War over the successor government of the Old Republic fought between its former members. Since the progenitors of the First Order was cast out of galactic society and matured in the isolation of the Unknown Region, it can be thought of more as a completely different nation. In an odd way, while this is all political, there is less politics involved with the sequels as it can be thought of more as a turf war.

He has sworn to kill every Jedi in the galaxy in order to honor his fallen grandpa, plus both are force sensitive. But The Separate Goverment´s plan to conquer the galaxy will be stooped by the Newly Reformed New Republic which is forced to use a clone army comprised of force sensitives led by Jedi Grand General Rey and Kylo. And the thing is they never answer why the Resistance is underfunded. The New Republic should have been able to fully back the Resistance.
    But even then why would the new republic need to back an underground resistance group in order to combat the first order?? The first order is obviously a malicious military group seeking to take over the new republic. Why the hell wouldn't the republic just combat the first order directly?? No answer for that in the movies. Which completely undermines the importance of the resistance and significance of them being desperate and small.

      Can't really disagree with Oscar Isaac here. Basically, the Resistance rarely would enter skirmishes openly with the FO, unlike the Rebels whom were more open to that. Attacking Starkiller was not only the Resistance's first real push back against the FO, but also one that they really didn't have a choice in saying 'no' to.

    Most people don't seem to like the new trilogy's "Resistance" because it reminds them too much of the rebellion, which as explained in the video were far superior. To me the new movies shows the dwindling power the Resistance has. The newest movie the last Jedi had a pretty obvious theme with it, Letting Old things Die. Throughout the movie you are shown examples of this, whether it be Luke's actions, Kylo's actions, or the Dying Resistance holding on by an inch. The Resistance is becoming one of the old things Dying off. The question at the End of the movie is will they?
    Probably not

    Seeing as each faction is a lot smaller now, and we know other factions exist. I would love if episode IX explored the possibility of a third player. Mandalor, the chiss, ect. I know the new movies seem to like creating side stories that don't go anywhere, but it would be awesome if right before the First Order struck down the resistance, they had to recall cruisers to defend against a third party

    I actually like the sequel films, unlike many, but it is disappointing that they basically discarded everything that the heroes won in the original trilogy just to make the conflict a rehash of an evil empire (First Order) against a rag-tag rebellion (Resistance) again. I know that some of the spin-off books have tried to explain the origin of the conflict, but it makes no sense that it should have been up to a tiny Resistance to oppose the First Order while the New Republic, the official dominant power in the galaxy, did nothing and then was totally defeated by one shot from Starkiller base.
    Say what you will about the prequels or the old Legends material, but at least they told completely different stories than the original trilogy and allowed for real changed in the status quo of the galaxy, not just the same conflict with different names.

      Don't forget that it's been 30 years in between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens, so the First Order has better technology, weapons, ships, etc. They maybe smaller than the Empire, but the First Order makes it up in quality over quantity.

    (Spoiler, You Have Been Warned)
    In Star Wars The Rise Of Skywalker:
    The Resistance completed tasks on whatever they call that giant sun planet thing. They gathered a tracking device from the Rebellion, as a factor of them being in the same faction, just a separate fragment. He states this, yet it was in 2017. How the Resistance formed in the end was that all the ships heard there call against Emperor Palpatine's New Order. This ultimately shows the galaxy has more backup than stated in this YT video. They had more troops, artillery, and Jedi due to Ben Solo.

    APOLOGIES IN ADVANCE ABOUT TO GO INTO RANT MODE
    I guess this is why it's hard for me to get into Sequel trilogy content.
    Prequels - You had the galactic republic who stood for democracy but was riddled with corruption and bureaucracy Then you had the CIS, planets that just wanted to be free and get away from the republic's corruption while being manipulated by Galactic Megacorporations who are being manipulated by the sith.
    OG - There's the Galactic Empire, an evil empire that wants to rule the galaxy and will crush all those who oppose them under their boot. With the Rebel Alliance who are all these rebel cells coming together under one banner to fight against the Galactic Empire and restore democracy from Tyranny.
    Yes the First Order and Resistance have their differences but they don't have enough aesthetic differences to help them stand on their own. The First Order feels like Galactic Empire BUT EVEN MORE NAZI, and The Resistance just feels like Rebel Alliance HD Redesign.
    The Galactic Republic had aesthetics that look like they could EVOLVE into the Empire but also some elements here and there where the Rebel Alliance would carry off from them. And then my favorite the CIS, they had their own more unique aesthetic, they felt more rounded and alien which was fitting as alot of 'alien' races formed the CIS. The Galactic Republic and CIS feel like a reverse Empire and Rebels in the sense where the position of the Empire is in the Republic are the good guys while the position the Rebels are in the CIS are the bad guys. Like what George Lucas once said IT RHYMES.
    Now we get into the First Order and Resistance..... Their aesthetics are almost the same. It feels like only 5 or so years passed, not 36 years. Now we look towards the time between Episode 3 and 4, it was 19 years right? The aesthetics of technology were vastly different, letting the prequels stand on it's own, comparing the two it feels like by the time of the Galactic Civil War, technology had advanced.
    Let's play pretend here. Remove the Resistance here, we'll keep the First Order. If we had the New Republic instead, we can see how the Rebel Alliance advanced, we can see heirs of the alliances at full industrial and military support. This would make a new war by far more cinematic.
    I'm one of the few people that likes Vice Admiral Holdo. I have a feeling why people don't like here, she's the vice admiral of the Resistance, a VERY VERY important person. She came in wearing a dress and purple hair. Before I get to my point let's take Mon Mothma here for a second, had pretty hair, wore a dress, she was a Rebel leader but didn't hold military ranking in a combative sense, I know I'm explaining that part poorly I'm sorry. Leia wore a dress and was all pretty but she didn't hold military ranking UNTIL Empire Strikes Back, by then she ditched her dress. Now back to the point, if Holdo had worn uniform and didn't have that purple hair I feel people would have liked her more.

    The rebellion had a lot of clone wars hero’s and veterans and some elite imperials who defected which really helped
    Ya those heavy bombers were limited because they were terrible and easy targets

    Disney's fan-fiction sequel trilogy is so.... boring
    In the Star Wars universe there is literally unlimited possibility to make new factions that are exciting, new and iconic.
    Actually I'm wrong, Disney did make new factions: The Galactic SJW feminist alliance & The Incompetent Order
    Legends is canon for me, Disney's fan-fiction no longer has any meaning for me

    Good bye rebels.

    I don't consider episode 7 & 8 canon, and neither do many of the fans. First was a ripoff of the 1977 original and the other politicized, post-modern / feminist bs. Nothing more than glorified fan films, with the difference that fan films wouldn't take a shit on the franchise like Last Jedi did. Thanks for ruining Star Wars & abolishing the EU which was 10x better than this crap, thanks Disney ... -_-'

      You are literally complaining that episode 7 was too much like the originals, and in the same breath whining that episode 8 was too much of a change. We can't take you seriously.
