Never have I bought a product so fast after watching a TH-cam video for the first time. I picked up Dungeon (sight unseen) and a pencil. I may try this Galaxy and others later. Hats off to you sir for creating this!
Awesome idea! I'm the developer of a software that makes it easy to print RPG stuff from thermal printers. These Paper Appe give me a interesting new perspective on self contained games in such a format :)
Man, you're a genius! The concept, the design, the depth of thinking, the pencil dice, the easily-reproducable format. Genius! I'm getting some as gifts for me and my friends. Thank you for this potential fun!
This reminds me so much of the tiny games we played in the past on vacation or back in the car when traveling. This was when I was a small kid in the 80s 😊
This one is my favorite! I really love the semi-non-linear nature of the map screen. I especially love how you can keep playing after beating the game and 100% it.
@@gladden-design I already enjoyed the playable demo that you provided as a PDF in the Kickstarter campaign. It is a great and very well balanced system. Good combination of easy-to-understand but enough tactical depth to keep it interesting and challenging. I’ll also try Golf and Dungeon I saw at your online shop
Just discovered these. I am a huge fan of small PnP games and will often sit with a 2mm dotted graph notebook and play something like vector racing (usually I make it a space race with obstacles). These little games are absolutely fantastic. These would have been HOT in the Army. Soldiers get so bored and you can only play so much one-hand solitaire with a deck. These would have been a great pocketable game.
@@gladden-design I believe that! I bet the space one sells good there too when it is out. Especially if you add in a little tactical decision making (usable missiles/bombs/etc). Print a version with a brown or OD green cover and see about making some kind of deal to get them into PXs. Good stuff.
Looks really amazing. So much thought has gone into making it fun, rewarding, and thinky. However it remains very straightforward, clear, and simple to pick up. Very nice
that's really cool. The pen is super interesting but I can't help but think that having a piece for your ship, something magnetic that could be attached to the pen would be great for keeping track of your location.
A magnetic flap could dual-function as a cover for the notebook, and a layer to go under your current page so a little metal piece could stick to the page! Would be pretty easy to DIY I imagine
PREMIUM ITEM OPPORTUNITY! a PEN, with a metal top that has a tiny 'pin' sticking out a few mm. Then a small metal washer that sits on that. Then a little metal nub of a topper with a tiny magnet in it that holds them all together. When playing you take the pen-colored magnetic nub off, take the washer off, put the washer under the page and the nub is your ship, character, golfball, held to the paper by magnetizing to the washer on the other side. If they could be made thin enough and the magnet a stronger one, it would even be used to save your place mid-game and let you close your notepad with it still in place. Fun thought experiment. While I admit I would so buy it, it may not be the best ROI even as a premium item as the series catches on and you get dozens of these out.
Very well thought out. If you make a Galaxy 2, 3, 4, etc… you could add elements to tie the games together. For example: Maybe certain Sectors have a significance that would be important in another Galaxy. Maybe one is a Ship Factory and if Sector so and so in Galaxy (1) was destroyed then in Sector so and so in Galaxy 2 you could remove one ship (per die roll to determine). That all would be found out at that page of Galaxy 2. Or there is some specific bonus that can be achieved in Galaxy (1) that can be carried over to Galaxy 2, or 3, etc that would be of use in that tablet.
Wow this is so cool and creative! I dont think ive ever seen a paper game like this, I thought they were only limited to things like word searches and sudoku. This would be neat to take on flight when u wanna do something other than stare at your phone the whole time
Such a clever design! Im a game designer/graphic designer, kicking around what it would look like to produce my on small games on occasion (after i graduate this year). Im curious about your experience making these, and your goals with the product line. I see on your website that you do a variety of games, both physical and digital. Is this something you're doing full/part-time?
I currently do this part time as a hobby. I am a UX designer full time. I consider it a success that I can produce and ship the games and that people are enjoying them!
I got my copy today, really neat little package! I’m looking to playing through it and the other games I ordered with it! There are a few things I’m still unclear on though. When a mine destroys an enemy, does that count towards the sector goal, or does it have to be from your own shots? Do mines also destroy adjacent pickup items? If a mine destroys another mine, does it cause a chain reaction (does the other mine also explode)? If I approach an enemy from a direction it’s aiming in, is the space I land on the one that’s considered the crossing point, to roll for the enemy shooting at me? (I’m guessing that one is yes but just wanna make sure). If I’ve landed on a space an enemy is aiming at and decide to shoot at it (after it’s shot at me), does the enemy shoot again after my shot (do we keep exchanging blows?) or does it not shoot again until I do another ship movement and cross it again (if it hasn’t been destroyed)? Basically, if I shoot at it multiple times while I’m in its firing range, does each shot count as a “turn” and will it keep shooting back at me?
When a mine destroys an enemy, does that count towards the sector goal, or does it have to be from your own shots? Yes it counts toward the goal. This could be a creative way to win. Do mines also destroy adjacent pickup items? No, pickups can’t be destroyed, only picked up. If a mine destroys another mine, does it cause a chain reaction (does the other mine also explode)? Yes. If I approach an enemy from a direction it’s aiming in, is the space I land on the one that’s considered the crossing point, to roll for the enemy shooting at me? (I’m guessing that one is yes but just wanna make sure). Yes, that is correct. In this case, where you are traveling directly in their line of sight it would be the spot you land on. The enemy only fires at you once between movements, but you can fire back at it multiple times between movements. Thanks for your comment. I will add these clarifications to the detailed rule guide.
I’m wondering if you could clarify: once the level mission is done, do I have to stop playing the level? I bought a copy and am halfway through the game but have been continuing to get the remaining level credits after “winning” and I think the game is probably easier than it’s supposed to be. I might be the outlier, but perhaps clarifying that “once the level objective is complete, do not continue playing the level” might be clearer wording.
@@gladden-design for international shipping maybe. Have you considered the possibility of partnering with a printing company in Europe to drastically reduce delivery costs on the continent?

Each book is randomly generated. So it's the same overall game, but with different levels and alien encounters in each one. Like many roguelike video games that generate new levels each time you play.
You should make a pen with a click top that is the "dice roll". This way I could play this game on the bus, or anywhere without a table, like the park.
This is awesome! Are you planning in offering a digital/PDF version so you can play on a tablet? EDIT: just saw the option on your site and kickstarter!
Have you considered making this into a mobile game? I understand that it's part of the charm but the gameplay looks pretty fun and I feel like you'd be able to sell it as an app
I have made several mobile games and the goal with Paper Apps is definitely to offer single player experiences that are off-screen. And also to create games that aren't platform dependent. I like the idea that someone could find a Paper Apps game 100 years from now and it would still "work". That being said, I'm no anti-screen crusader and I still make video games as well. I agree that the positioning and firing mechanics could work well in a video game as well, and is worth exploring!
