Pepe didn't live up to expectation PERIOD. Any view otherwise is attempting to split hairs. He flattered to deceive, n that was his undoing. The expectation was he'd produce weekly on the right wing, BUT unfortunately he did with the most being sprinklings of brilliance.

Pepe was a scandalous signing made by Sanhelli that involved swindling Arsenal in transfer funds by overpaying. This is the reason he was fired.

@@timothyinduli968 Offensively Pepe is great but problem with Pepe is his defensive actions. Lack willingness to track back, passive head on challenge and show minimum effort for defensive work in training (this training one is a direct quote from source). All of this is a direct breach of Arteta's non-negotiable culture in Arsenal. Pepe is not to blame tho, he was just a great player at the wrong club - Source Athletic and several Arsenal podcasts.

Arsenal signed Pepe 2-3 weeks after Edu has joined Arsenal for his current role.
It’s a deal probably not done by Edu.

    • @raetekusu1

Yeah. We typically attribuite it to Raul Sanllehi, especially considering there was absolutely no chance Pepe was worth 73m, and Raul was known for some dodgy deals. He's a large part of the reason why Barcelona are in such dire straits right now, but unlike Arsenal, Barcelona have been scrambling to put short-term bandage solutions on their problems rather than take the painful but necessary austerity measures for a few windows needed to implement a more sustainable model.

Also, Emery didn't actually want to sign Nicolas Pepe initially. His preferred option was Wilfried Zaha, as he was a tried-and-tested Premier League player, and Emery knew that he could end up being judged on the results in the short term. But the Arsenal hierarchy preferred Pepe because he was younger, so they overruled him and made the gamble

I feel like you really missed a big component here. Arsene Wenger was always dealing with a financial loss due to the repayments of the Emirates stadium being built which would have made it all that more difficult for him to get the players he wanted, the reason why it is really now possible is because, Kroenke actually took the loan on the stadium and transferred it to his personal companies to give Arsenal a bit of freedom financially. Also to add to that as well, Arsenal are now using data to find players instead of the traditional scouting methods, essentially the movie (Moneyball 03) to find their players using StatDNA. Focusing on finding players in their peak years to build the club up. It took multiple seasons for them to be able to get rid of the big name players that were well past their peak to be able to bring in the younger squad we see today.

You said it Best. As a kid I almost hated Arsene cos I had to show up to school on Mondays after a bitter loss. But I'm older now and understand much better. It was the burden of the Emirates.
The data driven analysis explains why we've gotten so much better so much faster. We're doing much better than the Arsenal management probably forecast.
Personally, I'm just glad that the Emirates is slowly being restored to the glory of Highbury and it has potential to even surpass it. Yes I'm talking of a Champions League trophy 😅

Edu is not Arsenal DOF. He is Technical Director and mainly the 'face' of Arsenal's transfer but he didnt do the negotiation. Arsenal's DOF is Richard Garlick, an unknown figure even for most Arsenal fans.
3:06 The man between Arteta and John Kroenke is Richard Garlick.

The preference for Arsenal/Emery was WZ, but it appeared as if Crystal Palace became greedy and stubborn, particularly as a) CP believed AFC had a well-speculated financial injection, b) they already had plans for spending a WZ lump sum at least a season before when he wanted to leave CP for trophies, c) WZ had just enjoyed an excellent season plus d) it was clear that WZ wanted to go to Arsenal and AFC had formally shown interest. Thus CP increased WZ's valuation - despite his age - and allegedly refused to broker a reasonable, fairly standard, multi-payment deal with AFC: insisting on most of allegedly £70m+fee up front. Lille were prepared to accept a payment structure, Pepe was only 23 and flying in Ligue 1. End of. Pepe was a very good player but not yet suited to the EPL at a time when AFC had a very mixed quality, sometimes troubled squad (from excellent internationals, world cup and UCL winners mixed to less than average players on good wages, players played out of position, a new, under-pressure manager after 20+ years, no defence to speak of etc). AFC needed a ready-made, robust, EPL experienced, preferably already English-speaking, prime, goal-scoring winger like Zaha. Under those circumstances and being overly scrutinized and criticized, Pepe did well and still wanted to fight for his place.
