Hi Ya folks! Beware of a GIVEAWAY SCAM. This channel is NOT doing a Giveaway and we are NOT asking for personal information. If you get a message asking for info, please ignore it.
Jimbo
I love how much of a stealth car this will be. Once it has been mufflered, you can cruise around town and only the most observant people will notice anything different about a little silver Honda buzzing around rural Kansas.
Oh, they will notice no matter how quiet.😉
I'm sure they are used to the crazy guy driving weird loud cars around town.
@@kd5inm LOLLLLL
@@kd5inm Tell that to my neighbors, am I right?
Except that most humans have never seen one of these Hondas, and it's unique even amongst today's weird designs and looks..
I have a bone-stock 2000 Honda Insight 5-speed in that same silver color. It has 340,000 miles and I just returned from a trip to Huntsville, AL from my home in Virginia. 582 miles each way with a trip fuel mileage average of 56.4 mpg. Cost me $58 in gas for the round-trip! I love my insight and it's my daily driver.
Amazing, have you had to do anything to the engine (aside from servicing) in that time? Do the batteries still work ok?
The battery pack was replaced at approx. 295,000 miles by the previous owner. I replaced the clutch at 300,000 miles and replaced the rear springs with stiffer ones and new rear shocks. And the tires were replaced with Vredestein 185 profile because I like to actually have some grip when cornering. On a previous trip to Huntsville and back last Fall I averaged 63 mpg. All at interstate speeds. It's amazing to be doing 70 mph and look at the tach and be turning 2,500 rpm. That fifth gear is a monster ratio!
@@sambateman8097 300k on a clutch is impressive. I always quite liked the idea of having a first gen Insight, but prices seem to have gone a bit crazy.
@@sambateman8097 3rd in the insight is 1:1, its got a double overdrive. 5th is 0.7:1. I got mine up to 102mph on a long downhill on i84 in pennsylvania, and it was sitting right around 3000 lol
Wtf one liter for only 61ct??? In Germany a liter is 1.8€
I wonder what sort of fuel economy this will get, now that's in a ligher and more aero friendly shell :D
We will find out soon..
@@robotcantina8957 Awesome!!!
I hope the aero friendly shell will stay aero friendly when turbo and super charger are installed
@@Puj0 Why wouldn't it? Besides an intercooler not much should change
@@OscarOliu Saturn had few extra holes in its front lid
For the muffler, try to study the “Helmholtz” principle. You may get away with just a certain sized hole at a certain place to get the resonance out of the system. The engine then can breath freely and there are no restrictions
Another way is to weld a tee on to the exhaust, with a closed ended pipe which is at half the resonant frequency.
It sounds odd and pointless, but bare with me...
I couldn't see the RPM gauge so I can't calculate it :- a closed ended pipe resonates at twice the frequency of an open ended.
So where you can hear it's quite loud and raspy when going through the rev range, you'd basically divide the rpm/3, for 3 cylinders, and then you'd have a number. You use that number to find out the wavelength in feet and inches (or CM for us metric bods), then half that number because a closed ended pipe would effectively double it, as mentioned above.
The pipe doesn't have to be straight, it can be curved.
Or just get a glass pack and embrace the diesel tunes.
@@CableWrestlerI second that idea about a hole a the right spot. A scooter might not be a great comparison but a second hole a couple inches down from the end and it didn't sound like a weed eater anymore. It also ended up a tad quicker by seat of the pants method plus gps speed apps.
@@CableWrestlerthat is indeed the helmholtz resonator! It would be fun to see at wich rpm the engine resonates the most. As far as I can hear, it resonates at 2 harmonic frequencies.
@@midianvanhattem Ah, so that's why some vehicles have "nubs" on the air intake. I figured it was for noise, but that explains how it works.
The Kubota/Honda runs well out of the box and even hits a 64 mph top speed without the stupidcharger. That sounds like an early Christmas present from the God of Automotive Chaos.
Merry Christmas Jimbo & Co.
Thank you for the excellent videos. They have become a regular feature of my Sunday afternoons (I live in a "European" timezone). They remind me of the tinkering I used to do 30 years ago, and mostly of the tinkering I wished I had done (but lacked the skill, equipment, and space).
Glad you like them!
These projects are incredibly entertaining! Thanks so much Jimbo!
U have made my crappy Sunday a lot happier now, thank u.
Merry Christmas Jimbo and family. Thank you for another wonderful video. Please keep up the great work. I'm glad to see the gnomes are doing just fine. They haven't made an appearance in awhile.
Wishing you all the same. Happy holidays!
Before you put the super charger on i think it would be worth your time ro press off the pulley and fab a bolt on hub system, this would make changing boost levels a breeze in the future should you wish.
I can relate to the loud exhaust, the drone from my old pontiac with the cherry bombs on it sounded amazing at idle or under full rip, on the highway it started to feel like I was underwater and there was a nagging pressure on my eardrums. Thanks again for your content, very interesting. Can't wait to see how it plays out.
My daily driver is a bobbed 1968 M35a2 Deuce and a Half. Didn't have a muffler when it was in the service and ain't got one now. My hearing is shot, but these days, at 73, there isn't much I want to listen to anyoldways.
@@oddshot60 that's one hell of a daily driver, not very practical for where I live, I'm a little jealous. :)
This 3 cylinder sound is amazing !!! Let go at 4000 RPM 🎉❤
I'm now waiting for Jimbo's book Animals You Didn't Know Are Marsupials :) All the best for christmas and the new year.
You too!
I can't wait until you score a 5 cylinder, air cooled Deutz lol. I mean, I love these videos and I know you like strange combinations. Of course, it's probably unobtainium for what you're doing, but I can dream! Great work as usual!
You know, for being a refrigerator, it sounds kinda neat! lol I expect a supercharger would help, especially at the low end. I can't wait to see how it all turns out!
This is coming along nicely and the sound of that little car without a silencer when you give it the beanz reminds me of a 1960's 3.8 Jag
Hello from Slovenia 🇸🇮. Great content man.
Love the fun projects here. Thr ultimate finish for the Honda would be making it diesel electric! Just a thought. Im sure you of all people could do it on a budget.
Just before you commented, I was thinking, "Hey, that sounds mighty familiar"... and you nailed it, a classic 2 stroke DD.
nothing beats this channel and a sunday dinner
So glad to see the insight back on the road.
I remember the gnomes, ah, they're back! Great to see them again.
Merry Christmas and a happy new Year Jimbo!
Detroit diesel, the second most efficient way to turn money into noise without the byproduct of power!
Love your projects!
Gnome Chomsky and the gang always make me smile
Thank you so much!
So back on Tuesday i bought a 2003 civic hybrid 5 speed for $700, it need a little rust repair and other tlc but its solid. If that cute little 1.3 liter gas motor ever dies im totally gonna slam a funny motor in it. Thanks Jimbo, your content is wholesome and always look forward to "hanging out" with you on sundays
I think the loud little diesel sounds cool. That's just my taste. I'd put Jake's on it if I could. Someday I will make my own turbo kubota. Videos like this are so cool. Screaming Jimmies actually started me on my diesel craze.
I always liked the first generation Insite. I imagine the car could do 45-50 MPG in current configuration. Looking forward to finding out what the actual mileage is. I have an 49 International KB1 1/2 ton pickup that needs a repower. I thought about a Mercedes OM616 or maybe OM617 diesel because I've owned a few, they have mechanical fuel injection, are readily available and very reliable. Unfortunately these Mercedes diesels have their power at the higher RPM range so not ideal for a farm truck. Thank you for the video, keep up the good work!
The first gen Insight is goofy looking, but is an awesome car. I'm told with the gasoline engine then can get as high as 70 MPG. From our Saturn experiments we expect something near 60 MPG with the diesel with normal driving. We will also try hypermileing and see how much it can get in extreme economy driving. The Saturn was able to get 80 MPG so this car should do about the same or a little bit better.
That was an awesome test run! Ida like to have seen the inspectors face when he popped the hood!
Some of the interesting experiments this channel does really makes me appreciate just how “quick” my daily driver BRM Jetta does 0 to 60mph. At 11 seconds, it’s the slower car I’ve ever driven, and would love to do some upgrades to cut a few seconds off it…
Must be nice to get the tags so quickly. In Ohio, we have to wait at least 4-6 weeks for plates. Last two times I bought a vehicle, the plates showed up at least a week after my temps expired, which is 45 days. Cops generally don't bother with that though, as everyone knows it's the BMVs fault.
@richiesrestorations4883 I couldn't imagine life in New York state. Every gun I own would be a felony.
Neighbor: *hears odd noise around town* Must be Jimbo again with one of his wild projects.
It's quite a bit of fun watching your projects. I hope you and the gnomes have a festive holiday season.
That sound of the diesel is great!!
In 1980 I drove my Renault Le Car with temp tags from NY state to OK and got new tags in Tulsa. That was a nice trip down, via Michigan. Ah, that was half a life ago.
Nice memories.
I owned a 2000 Honda insight I bought new in 2000. It was Red, loved that car, but after needing its 3rd battery at 4yrs old at 204,000 I finally got rid of it. Top speed I got in it was 104mph on a flat, best mileage was on an out and back to work when it was fairly new 100miles round trip 70mpg.
Yay Jimbo! Old beep at 9:00 mins and at the end of the video! Thanks buddy.
I watch you every Sunday. I don't think I've ever commented before. I just wanted to say I love your videos. Wholesome, entertaining, and educational. Great work!
What would be really interesting is seeing how much faster it’ll go if you lower the suspension a few inches and get the aerodynamic drivetrain fairing even closer to the road. And you have to admit it would look kewl.
this channel is great. hot rodding in its purest form.
Honda Insight Fun Fact: In factory form, the manual insights have a Lean Burn mode, which activates in 3rd gear or higher, when you have the engine below 3000rpm and ~20% throttle. It bumps the AFRs up to 20:1, and in this mode the 1.0L engine could make about 11hp, which is *just* enough to move the car through the air at 60mph on flat ground while getting 75-100mpg. It could do this for up to 3 minutes before it had to richen up to let the pistons cool down. that's why the manual insights got better mileage than the autos, and also why the autos had the SULEV rating while the manuals were only ULEVs.
Moral of the story is, that 20hp Kubota should have absolutely no issue moving this chassis down the road, and it should get some pretty astronomical MPGs compared to the saturn. 10 or so years ago, a guy swapped a 1.2L TDI from a euro VW Polo into an insight, and it managed 92mpg on the engine alone before he got the factory hybrid system functioning with it. I would not be surprised if this Kubota setup pulls high 80s/low 90s for mpg if Jimbo gets the aspiration figured out. Putting 50 or 60 psi in those tires will help it out, too.
RIGHT! Time to pull thengine, strip it, 'Blueprint it', grind & polish ports, fit forged rods, pistons and crank, rebuild, Turbo & Supercharge it, then a '200 Shot' of Nitrous! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Nah only kidding 😉. As usual, I'm looking forward to what this wee little project will do! 👍 Anyways... All the best to you Jimbo, your 'Crew' and your loved ones and hope you have a thoroughly enjoyable Christmas/Holidays. Kep up the fine, fun work fella! 👌😏
😎🇬🇧
I want to see one of these crazy swaps end up as a 24 Hours of Lemons car.
You would basically become knighted or royalty over there immediately haha.
What a dream country for tinkerers! No way you'd get this car street legal that easy in Europe! Prepare to spend loads of cash and time for very very thorough testing procedures, because the original car is altered in a big way, you will have to apply for the government to approve this 'thing' as a new car model... Good luck with that ;-)
EEhhh..., I don't know..., looks like Paul Teutul Sr.'s Gnome showed up for the holidays. Looking forward to you living the "Boosted" life. 🙂
That Gnome on the right reminds me of Paul Teutul Sr. of Orange County Choppers.
Sweet!!
I really enjoy your builds. I like the engineering and such but what I like the most is the eccentric engine choices. I don't know where you come up with these combinations but don't stop please.
Man what i wouldn't give to see that Honda in full supercharged glory, roll into my local vehicle inspection shop(Denmark, EU).
The look of incredulous shock & outrage on the face of the government licensed inspector would be absolutely priceless 😂
TG for Robot Cantina ~Happy Holidays to you all! ~
Don't forget this car has a 212 cc lawn mower engine in it at one point and was street legal.... so the diesel is quite an upgrade.
@@robotcantina8957 Oh I know... been here since the start and seeing the parade of madcap projects going through 'inspection' would be enough content for an entire season of 'Vehicle Inspector - Reacts'.
♥Robot Cantina ~ Never change please, you make every Sunday a fun day 😉
"Squint your ears"...perfect! Sounds exactly like a Detroit diesel, LOL!
Horses are marsupials just like deer... I learn a lot on this channel.
Merry Christmas Robot Cantina 🎄from a neighbor next door in Oklahoma ! Love the channel , wrench on 🙂
14 minutes and 26 seconds off pure joy thank you and have a very merry christmas
My Boss has me putting a 2 cylinder Kubota on a 1954 Cushman Eagle.
I'm going to recommend the engine monitor you are using.
"The metric people" lol. This is why I subbed. I agree on the 3 cyl make I6 sounds, like Inline 5's make V10 sounds, at high enough rpm.
11:45 That Tektronix oscilloscope brings back memories :).
Nice job, You will likely get get a lot of droning noise from the engine intake under the hood. it needs to be routed so it draws air from outside the engine bay. What would i know? Glad you never asked! I used to do diesel swaps in NZ back in the day.
Love your work!
Merry Christmas! Thanks for the wonderful entertainment and some good ideas.
I never really cared for gnomes until i found this channel.. now i get it
Thank you. Would be neat to see the stupid charger feeding the inlet of the turbo for fast spool and extra top end boost
You have awakened Christmas. Thanks.
Yes- the supercharger will add boost to the turbo-muffler! (ha, sorry, had to.) Looking good!
Merry Christmas Jim, team, and to all.
Great video like always and we all know the wheels of government offices turn at a snail’s pace. I imagine the holiday season is not helping that speed either.
Honestly, compared to my state government, Kansas seems very fast.
Jimbo outta add nitrous after the stupercharger is installed and dialed in 😆
Merry Christmas and a happy new year...!!!!!
You never disappoint...!!!
Jimbo, if you're having trouble building boost at low RPM, it's either a boost leak, a plumbing issue, or a poorly matched turbocharger. I wouldn't totally give up on them. There's a reason every diesel in existence uses them now.
They use a not that far off version of these now with turbos and emissions, etc.
We tried the VZ21/RB31 turbo on this engine and the results were OK, but like I said in the video we had trouble getting boost at the bottom of each gear. I'm not aware of any other low cost turbo that will work on this little engine. The Stupidcharger experiments should be fun and we will learn a thing or two.
@@robotcantina8957maybe try a compound setup after the supercharger experiments and see if you can get the best of both worlds? Might blow up tho…
I, for one, am very glad to have the supercharged diesel content. It's not something you see every day, and this channel is all about the road less traveled.
@@robotcantina8957 yeah, unfortunately the thing with turbodiesels is that the lower RPM means it's pumping less air and turbos need to be scaled accordingly. If the turbo is matched to the 500-1000cc gas engines they probably intend them for, that 2-3x RPM difference means you need a turbo that's 2-3x as small. I think the only thing you could do without buying something weird would be to go compound and feed the turbo with a supercharged engine that has a pulley set up for as much off-idle boost as possible.
When they say "Gnome Man's Land", they ain't screwin' around.
Finally my weekly fix...
Used to drive a wrecker that had a 8v92 Detroit in it. I do miss that sound.
Merry Christmas to you too. Thanks, stay safe and all the best to you. God bless.😮….😊
I love this series. I love the jankyness but everything is still well done in the end lol.
I have been watching a lot of edison motors videos and i was thinking about how to downscale their idea of an electric vehicle with a diesel generator to a small car and how efficient it would or wouldnt be compared to just a small engine.
I think that this could be a really interesting project for this section of the automotive community and it seems like there really isnt anyone doing it right now.
The one channel ive seen do anything remotely close to this was grinhardplumbing and their cheap Chinese car with a gas generator on that offroad trail which was... interesting lol.
Jimbo im not sure how much knowledge you have with electric motors, battery management systems and generators, i dont know a whole lot myself, but i feel like it could be very approachable with all of the videos i have seen recently suggest.
Merry Christmas and thanks for entertaining and educating us!
Thanks for the video, enjoy your Christmas folks!
I like the exhaust it reminds me of the old British sports cars.
64MPH! Congratulations, you just matched the 1980's VW Golf diesel for top speed and acceleration.
A successful road test and no gnomes stole your wrenches. Win win!
Happy holidays to the Jimbo and crew!
Nadolig Llawen from 🏴.! Great to see it legally back on the road! 👌 Not too shabby for a first run! 🧐👏
Thanks!
A shop tour would be cool
first thing i thought when you went through the gears... sounds like a mini Detroit!
A chest camera rig will give you a better angle on the gauge cluster, but getting a smaller action camera like an Insta360 Go variety camera for a lower head mount would allow for a similar experience to your current one. Would just need a bracket hanging from your hat for the camera to magnetically attach to. This content may benefit from the horizon lock those cameras can do.
I enjoy each and every one of your videos, especially the Diesel ones.
Happy Harley D's
Merry Christmas, happy holidays to you and your beloved ones, Jimbo!
Looking forward to seeing this project with forced induction.
I gnome right away this was going to be a good episode!😂
Appreciate your videos. You and your family have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
I love the show, fixing to put an arm500 on a 97 ford aspire. It will be on my channel.
I'll have to check that out!
@@robotcantina8957 I've also got some older videos of putting a turbo and the same amr500 on a geo metro.
One of the best things about Sunday, your progress....I'd love to do something Interesting with my 1991 Festiva. The 63 rated horsepower is just a bit too luxurious
The B3 engine in those cars are awesome! Lots or torque for a tiny engine.
Rad ... look forword to seeing what the stupercharger 😅will do for it , I love boost n run 30psi on my daily toy lol (u had one way back when u started u channel ) n e ways peace and love bro keep it rad stay safe and build on and happy holidays to you and your fam aswell brotha
That would make the ultimate little Delivery Vehicle for a Big City where speed isn’t an issue. Probably Awesome on Fuel.
All I want for Christmas is a Robot Cantina face reveal. Nothing else.
Merry Christmas, It has been a fun year watching your videos, I am sure many people , like myself, were anxiously waiting for the next video to come out week after week..
Perfect Xmas gift!!! I love it!
One of the best on the Tube.
Thanks for another year, Jimbo.
Merry Christmas to you and yours.
Great progress. Merry Christmas Jimbo.
This show makes my day . Very enjoyable to watch.
@Robot Cantina Oh PLEASE consider getting the IMA system up and running in that Insight! How awesome would a 719CC diesel hybrid be? Those first gen IMA systems are relatively easy to hack for manual control.
Great job as always. One of your gnomes is showing their machine building skills. This engine swap is definatlty in the full preproduction prototype stage. Other channels i watch may do sometging similar to this. You see they might be a decent mechanic, but it is still a rigged mess. This is more of the "glitter. Imb" guy level. Keep it up.
I got a thought for you, do with it as you wish. Diesel engines like a constant rev to produce the best power and economy.. Agricultural equipment companies used to use cvt transmissions set up in a manner to what you are using. The big difference was that they kept the engine at a constant speed but mechanically adjusted the drive pully on the cvt. They also phased out this system for hydrostatic drives The russians similaly used a electrodrive. Similar to the GE locomotive drive system.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays, Mike from Montreal.
Your channel is an awesome Sunday morning view ☕️
Thanks for another good one. Glad to see the gnomes make a return.
