  • EUROPEAN ELECTIONS: "...a clear slap in the face!" SPD parliamentary group vice-chair Dirk Wiese I WELT Interview
SPD parliamentary group vice-chair Dirk Wiese compares the SPD's defeat in the European elections with the first leg of the Bundesliga relegation match between VfL Bochum and Fortuna Düsseldorf. VfL also managed to turn a 0:3 deficit in the first leg around - and his SPD will also manage to do the same before the general election. Wiese said on the news channel WELT TV:
"This morning you feel a bit like you did after the relegation first leg, like VfL Bochum: lost 3-0, a clear thrashing. But there is also a return leg, and the return leg is next year's federal election. Many of those who are writing us off today, who are calling for a complete new start, are perhaps a little too early. We as the SPD will now draw the right conclusions from yesterday's election defeat. But VfL Bochum also turned things around, and nobody expected that. And the return leg is in September 2025."
The SPD should not react "on instinct" now, but must analyze the mistakes "carefully." Wiese believes that a hasty decision to hold new elections is wrong and that the Chancellor is still the right candidate: "The SPD will provide the Chancellor, and we want to go into the 2025 federal election with Chancellor Olaf Scholz and - I say this quite openly - win these elections."
