    Peace and blessing's,brother Charles Woods,I'm a fellow babyboomer,that being the case,the so-called Blaxploitation era,was to me an meaningful place in time,seeing image's of Black men and women,in roles,other than slaves,butlers,etc.was a uplifting experience,even though I knew they were fictional.I agree the six films you listed, "Defied the stereotypical", The spook who sat by the door in particular,I remember being somewhat shocked that it was even released,as a movie,lol.

    No one breaks down Black film like Mr. Charles Woods. Thank you, sir. The Spook Who Sat By The Door blew me away & filled me with so much pride when I watched it and the question that came to my mind is, why haven't we done this --- why aren't we doing this?! We are *more* than capable of doing this right now. Awesome film!

    absolutely agree with the elders assessment 👏🏾 what's wild, was watching that last scene (a scene I've seen before, many times) with nichelle Nicholls, who at one point in the 60's, was going to leave star trek. But, Dr King convinced her to stay, illustrated her importance and the symbolic reference it had during that time. Knowing this, I highly doubt, had king not been murdered, Ms. Nicholls would have taken that role in Truck Turner

    Thanks
    This was a much needed and appreciated analysis of a few of OUR Movies. There are others that folks will enjoy if you liked some of the Professors picks. QUITE STORM (from the UK) , QUILOMBO (Brazil), SANKOFA, NOTHING BUT A MAN , etc.
    I'm not sure if I missed it, but I'm sure many of the movies in that era were produced via Hollywood, or their money, not to mention the promotion and theaters that were available. Many movies had limited, sometimes less than a weekend showings. I remember going to see UPTIGHT with my BoyScout Troop one weekend, never hearing about it again, until finding a copy on VHS in the 90's. THE EDUCATION OF SONNY CARSON, was show in front of the movie theater on Bway and thinking I could see it next week, it was gone forever, until Sonny showed it in the community to rally folks against crack in the 80's.

    • @charleswoods8556
      @charleswoods8556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +IndYah Rashaud Hello. Thanks for your time to view and leave a comment. Blaxploitation is a film genre many critics state began with Sweet Sweetback's Badasssss Song released in 1971. I feel the genre had its beginnings with Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970).The Landlord (1970) did not contain the elements of the blaxploitation genre: Gangsters; Sexy Black men and women; Militancy and an attitude of "Get Whitey". Be well. Peace and Blessings!!!

    Great content as usual! Question: What are your thoughts on Buck and the Preacher, 1972? How does that movie fit your typology of race in cinema?

    • @charleswoods9809
      @charleswoods9809 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Rkb Brown: Thanks for your viewing support. My response to your question is this: I liked Buck and the Preacher. Poitier took control of this film from the white director who was first assigned and under Sidney's direction, infused an angrier tone of Black retribution against the brutality and injustice of white racism. However, BATP failed at the box-office. In my opinion, Poitier's character, along with Harry Belafonte's, was contrary to their established on-screen personas. Sidney's fan base, many of whom are white, did not accept him as a bold and revenge-seeking "Blaxploitation" super spade. Poitier realized this and turned once again to the cinematic formulas that fit more with his popular image of the safe and non-threatening "Noble Negro". He followed BATP with the films Uptown Saturday Night and Let's Do It Again. They were mega hits.
      Once again, thank you for taking the time to support ReelBlack. Hope you continue to do so and I would love to know what topics you think we should address in future content. Peace and Blessings!
