We should be sorry for the TT WR holders before wave 4. just look at 150cc Toads Turnpike WR, wave 4 made the meta switch from inside drifting wall hugging to snaking and surprise surprise they lost their world record. And the mute city world record was in track to hit 1000 days as WR but Nintendo released wave 4 1 week too early so the WR got beaten at 993 days…
big up this comment, ster had a world record on mute city lasting years, got beaten easily in a few days after the wave 4 patch though and that was indirectly caused by people moaning and crying about the meta combo ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (the complaining changed nothing online and everyone plays the same combo, yoshi teddy nowadays anyway)
I never have a problem with the combo itself or the people that use it but really its just gets very boring to see everyone using the same character after a while. Of course i dont think its much of a problem now because the meta is incredibly diverse, at least character wise. Personally my favorite will always be pauline but when i do play a meta character its always peach, daisy or peachette on the city tripper.
I really like Yoshi being the meta because he's been my favourite Mario character to play in pretty much everything since Mario party 1 and he comes with 9 colour variations so there's always variation (who cares about Birdo?) But I would've loved a wild wild wiggler meta just for the memes it would sprout.
The biggest problem with this game is that the coolest looking builds are bad and goofy ahh builds are the best. What happened? Funky Flamerunner looked sick and so did my main daisy mach bike. In 7 the monster tires coupled with the b dasher were so cool. In ds rob dls and dry bomber looked awesome
Devil's advocate on the double standard point. - MK8DX puts a heavier focus on customization in casual play than MKWii ever did. One combo being overused flies in the face of that. - What FKFR and WW represent about their respective games is quite different. For Wii, it's the freedom of the game's controls and mechanics. For 8 Deluxe, it's a rigid hierarchy with little benefit to play control. One is why the game is so beloved, and the other is to detrement of the game itself. I don't agree with the mindset, but I understand why the double standard exists.
Most of the walu wiggler haters were semi-casual players, people who would tell new players to get good while also claiming the game was all rng and laughing at people for trying to actually get good at the game. My least favorite kind of player.. I used to love how angry they got when they lost to Walu Wiggler. Better times.

I agree, but I think it is still better. When Waluigi Wiggler was the meta, it was obvious that those classes of character, cart, wheel, and glider were optimal, and that was all that was used. There weren't many combos that were viable enough to compete with it. After waves 4 and 5, Yoshi Teddy was the best, but other alternatives could compete. (Tanooki Mario, Kamek, Pipe Frame, Ink Striker, etc) This allows for more diversity as other characters can be used.
it was never the only optimal combo, this game actually has a decent variety compared to some other mario kart games, yoshi teddy/waluigi wiggler were always just objectively the best combos so the higher up in skill level you go the more you'd see them, since people would of course want to be playing the best option available to them
The cool thing about the yoshi meta combo imo is that not only are there 5 different characters with the best stats (lots of diversity), but 2 of them have 9 different colors, which is great for team based lounge games! even then… the male villager class is basically the same thing as yoshi class, so that adds three more characters. then there’s the mario and luigi classes, which aren’t the same thing, but still very good… a lot of diversity in the new meta.
I feel like the problem wasn't that competitive players used the combo, it was more the fact that PUBLIC online lobbies had been filled with them, which made it easier to hate on because it's annoying seeing the same combo over and over again (in my opinion)

Don't think I ever noticed it was widely hated, it always felt similar to mkwii with a funny character dominating. This video did make me realize I heard these negative statements quite a bit in hindsight though.
Sadly the one part of the meta that I didn't like ended up not changing aka the Rollers. I purposely don't use Rollers even if I feel like playing with the meta combo that day, currently I use GLA, no idea if that's good or bad but at least it's not the rollers

Back in the day of comp Wii and 7, there simply weren't enough people around to complain about Funky Flame or Metal Mario/B-Dasher/Hot Monster/Flower Glider. (not to mention Wii players are deluded by nostalgia and memes and think it's a perfect game with absolutely zero flaws, but that's a topic for another day) I guess with 7 and 8(DX), there's also the fact that multiple combos can have the exact same stats, so people "can tell you're a meta slave" for using "that one" combo. Why use Waluigi Wiggler or Yoshi Teddy, when Roy Standard Bike or Daisy Cat Cruiser can do its respective job? TL;DR: Wii cannot be criticised.

For me its moreso how deluxe has soooo many kart parts and characters to pick from, yet only a super small handful get played online because everyone is obsessed with having optimal builds when you can have all sorts of unique combos that are close enough and can compete. Going off the mario wiki - "In total, there are 41 vehicle bodies, 22 tires, and 15 gliders, resulting in up to 13,530 different combinations", and this is before accounting for characters. Tens of thousands of possible combos and people are obsessed with using at best a few of them. Doesnt help that the roller wheels make every combo they are in look stupid too.
As a Waluigi stan, I loved the old meta. And before people say there was no uniqueness, there was a lot more than Waluigi, people just refused to try metal mario, or wario, or DK and roy. And it was so cool because it was unique and we could see characters who rarely get the spotlight, get the spotlight. But then we got three of the most basic characters classes to the new meta, with the only unique ones being the koopalings (who no one uses) and peachette (who no one likes). Luckily there was one character class which is cool that its meta, yet no one uses it, and 2 of them were forced to join together with there counterparts and Tanooki mario is just a mario alt. While I do think the new meta feels more comfortable to drive with, it just feels far more basic and less unique then the Waluigi meta.

i always hated waluigi wiggler. the hate waluigi wiggler got a very warrented, it was ugly and beyond overused. when online, even in low level lobbies, 11 waluigi wigglers wasn't uncommon, it was very tiresome and boring. The current meta is much better, simply having 9 yoshi colours, 9 birdo colours, peach, daisy and peachette all have the same meta stats so you see more variety is much more interesting and less repetitive than waluigi wiggler. funky kong flame runner is not a fair comparison as no other combination drives like it and only 2 other vehicles feel similar, MKWII is a very unbalanced game, but 8 is very balanced and a lot is viable yet people STILL refused to switch off waluigi. We're all glad he's gone.
I mean there is another reason people hated on Waluigi Wiggler way more than Funky Flame rider- it just looks dumb. Like I enjoy the cutesy vehicles in Mario kart and wild wiggler is no exception, but it just doesn’t match the colors of either roller wheels (whereas teddy buggy does perfectly) nor of waluigi, and the end result just looks sort of absurd. Is that a good enough reason for people to absolutely hate this combo and target every player using it, I definitely don’t think so, but it was a factor in the hate that is important to mention

Honestly, Mario Kart 8 is a balanced enough game that you don't lose THAT much playing other combos so I didn't care much about the meta, I just rocked the B-dasher alone
I actually feel like Roy is the best character to play as on that weight class from the game, because using Waluigi and DK can actually cause players to get really horrible on their schoolwork and a ton of stress.
I think the bashing on the meta comes down to the fact almost anyone who uses it in a given lobby plays like their life depends on and it then boils down to the fact if you're seen running meta you're basically that one meme from toy story 2 but in the format of mario kart.

funky kong flame runner is not a fair comparison as no other combination drives like it and only 2 other vehicles feel similar, MKWII is a very unbalanced game, but 8 is very balanced and a lot is viable yet people STILL refused to switch off waluigi. We're all glad he's gone.
I mean there is another reason people hated on Waluigi Wiggler way more than Funky Flame rider- it just looks dumb. Like I enjoy the cutesy vehicles in Mario kart and wild wiggler is no exception, but it just doesn’t match the colors of either roller wheels (whereas teddy buggy does perfectly) nor of waluigi, and the end result just looks sort of absurd. Is that a good enough reason for people to absolutely hate this combo and target every player using it, I definitely don’t think so, but it was a factor in the hate that is important to mention

I think the double standard has to do with the fact Funky Kong looks cool on the Flame Runner while Waluigi looks awkward on the Wild Wiggler.

I agree, Waluigi Wiggler meta wasn't an issue, and was massively overhated. Plus, Wiggler Wiggler meta being the meta would've been funny to see.
i still remember not knowing anything about the game like 3 years ago and just going into games and seeing EVERYONE in the lobby minus me and maybe another dude using walu wiggler 😭
Honestly, Mario Kart 8 is a balanced enough game that you don't lose THAT much playing other combos so I didn't care much about the meta, I just rocked the B-dasher alone
I actually feel like Roy is the best character to play as on that weight class from the game, because using Waluigi and DK can actually cause players to get really horrible on their schoolwork and a ton of stress.
Wa wiggler is still perfectly usable it's just not the best
I think the bashing on the meta comes down to the fact almost anyone who uses it in a given lobby plays like their life depends on and it then boils down to the fact if you're seen running meta you're basically that one meme from toy story 2 but in the format of mario kart.
For being honest peachette and birdo are the most horrible characters of all mario kart history
