our local department got a 2019 Pierce rear mount 100ft tower truck $1.2 million.
It was the longest truck our department ever had (it replaced an 80ft ladder from 1995).
They totaled it when they did their first training exercise with it because they hit some power lines with the ladder.

I like the traditions you maintained. My forestry school Dean reminded us frequently, "You can't beat custom, habit, and tradition." I spent a few years on the Angeles NF on a Hotshot Crew and a couple of years as an officer on a Class 3 engine. Rolling stock was primitive. The hotshot "buggy" was a stakeside with home made seats along the sides and tools under the seats. The engines were1950s and early 1960s vintage. Even the small "buildings" at one of stations began life as a wall tents. We carried the same basic tools as you. It just shows the firefighting fundamentals haven't changed. A great book if you can find it is "Fire" by Stewart, dated 1948. It is a story about a large fire in an inaccessable area and the men who fought it.

Awesome job guys, a lot has changed in 40 plus years. The decon back then was a quick rinse off with a hose line. Brush ops were a shovel, rake, pick ax and hoe plus an indian can. Can't say I miss the cold rides on the back step either. The good ol' days. Good luck with the new rig.

Excellent review of the vehicles, and the equipment on board along with a description of what these pieces of equipment are for too. Some fire fighters seemed to really enjoy their job, can't hardly keep from smiling while talking about the new rig. These are both very well equipped to handle multiple situations. Great video coverage. Go SMFR.

You guys would be amazing if you could pull this off
Do a series of touring the stations and the way things are done there. Starting with station 11 and working your way up. you guys already did station 12 with the day in a life series. Go through every single station, kind of like you did with station 12. Do a tour of the fire station, and the apparatus there. Not necessarily like fleet Friday where you open up all the compartments that would take forever. Explain what they are station pride is, and show us really what’s unique about that station. And if there happens to be a call. Ride with them. Not only it would be great content for the TH-cam channel. But it will really show your local citizens what South Metro fire is all about.

You don't keep a Knox key in there?
My department is in a small ish town versus Metro and we carry a Knox device on our engines.
And as far as the way the hoses are laid out, I strongly suggest looking into the triple lay. We started using that today on our engine and it's pretty cool, there's no flaking it out and it doesn't look like spaghetti when it's pulled. It's ready to charge as soon as it's off the truck.

Fire history lesson: Wetting down the wheels was also to get the horse crap off of the steamer's wheels before you put it in the barn. And back in the day, you push the engine in because the horses could not back the engine in. And at 25:40, he meant to say 1.5" and 1" hose, standard on wildland engines.

Quick question, who makes Brush 19? Pierce? Just wondering. Nice Rigs and I think Pierce makes one of the nicest Apparatus out there. Keep up the good work!

@19:45 I am glad we are one of the very few FDs around anymore that provide non emergent lockout assistance. Run the plate with dispatch, and as long as the registered owner matches the person on scene, we will unlock a car for anyone (after having you sign a paper saying we are not responsible for any damage that may result, which truly is none, but have that as a protection). We do this as long as the first due engine is not tied up on another call. If it is an emergency lockout (child in the vehicle, pet in the vehicle, or the vehicle is running) we will respond the second or third due if the first due is on a call. Oh we also still will get a cat out of a tree if someone calls for that as well. We are the only FD in the area that does either of those things. In some of the surrounding jurisdictions even the emergent lockouts are handled by the police/sheriff's departments.

Alexis MSP Gaming that isn’t true at all. Most all the surrounding departments do exactly that...

@@UnionPacific18 in my area and in the areas I have traveled to the vast majority of FDs will not do lockouts or cat in tree calls anymore. For every department that does I've seen 10 that do not.

Yes. All SMFR Firefighters have a back up set of gear to use while their primary set is being washed.
