if you can try a map but split it into four sectors. 1 is rain forest, 1 is desert, 1 is snow and 1 is ocean/achipelego type. you can alter the rain forest if you want to whatever biome you want. and out each civ in its own respective biome. e.g, russia is tundra. arabia is desert, congo is rainforest and maori is ocean
Can you do a play through where half the world has been flooded or something. Like in Europe maybe Germany, Switzerland and a large chunk of eastern Europe flood and that separates Europe into islands. But do that every were.

Especially in a land where natural expansion is so difficult, having a reliable source of iron can give you a very big advantage in war because you'd be the only one making medieval units without having to find iron on the map.
