I think for once Mani Shankar Iyer is right. The BJP never really opposed the opening of the economy thus allowing a minority government to push thru such massive reforms. My respect for PVNR has gone up many folds, he was a trojen horse and played his part well. He stood up to the Darbar, hired a competent Finance Minister who normally agrees with his boss and laid the foundation stone for the Ram mandir.
When Mahatma Jinnah said "Hindus and Muslims are two separate nations" Maulana Nehru agreed. Together they divided Bharatvarsh a united civilizational entity for 5000 years... The whole interview right from the start drips of aristocracy. Being in Doon school in those days , being in august company in a country where one could not identify themselves with either the masses or the culture must have engendered a fraternal bond that will find them completely out of place in todays milieu. How could he like the current dispensation, that came up the hard way and from the common masses. He is still in a stupor of nostalgia for a time gone by where he mattered . So much for his sense of accommodation that does not go beyond a particular community. Feel sorry for his agony that will only become worse with time . May this pain enhance his wisdom and broaden his outlook . Last but not the least , thanks to his chai wala remark , his biggest service to this country .

If the majority was strong then they wouldn't let MPLB stay and we had control over all our religious places the way u have with Waqf. I am surprised that this aristocrat does not realize that his views are anachronistic and to a large extent obsequious. It is not uncommon that a courtier always sings eulogy for the king in whose time he enjoyed all the perks of fealty and always decries times where his views do not find favor . I quite enjoyed the anecdotes as he is a good yarn spinner. The stories of a snobbish education and his language still peppered with quaint turn of phrases from a bygone era of English public schools. So in the end MSI is a sad leftover of the brown boys of the colonial era. Trying some self deprecation but the arrogance and smugness comes through, looking down on the native schools. These old men are so far removed from ordinary Indians. It’s no wonder that Modi wins. Naive in his approach to Pakistan. He starts off the interview on a (wrong) notion that with the Moon landing, (Rajiv) Gandhian philosophy has won and atomic energy philosophy has been defeated. In fact, both, the atomic energy and the space program, progressed in parallel and both did good for the country. They both were equally supported by progressive minded prime ministers. His attempt to own (on behalf of the Nehru family) the credit for moon landing only shows how zealous and vociferous he is about the Nehru family's glory.

He is sad that he hasn’t met the Gandhis for a decade. If he indeed is a democrat , he should seek a meeting with Cong President Kharge for example. He talks about Rajiv at every opportunity. He is in that sense a one-trick pony. Rajiv had 'bad' advisors. Whereas Rao (who sidelined Aiyar), is a ‘bad non-secular’ actor.
