I just upgraded my T420 today to i7-2670QM. Earlier I upgraded the display to 1080p. HDD to Samsung SSD 860 Pro. Next stop will be memory upgrade to 1866MHz and WiFi module to AX200. This definitely is fun. But man, that i7 is hot! Idling at 42C even with TG conductonaut
Yeah for sure! There’s some people that go ahead and do a fan mod but I don’t think it even helps that much. Might have to do some research on that WiFi module, hadn’t heard about it. :)
Did this upgrade along with a 1080p screen. Idle temps 45c - 50c browsing Internet 50c - 65c recommend downloading tp fan controller as well as cleaning out the fan used termal grizzly kryounaut on aida 64 stress test cpu temp levels out at 89c. Ran Aida 64 stress test for 30 minutes. Happy with the result as with the i5 I was getting similar temps anyway.
@@revraitah Google Coreboot and their site has everything you need. There are also projects like Skulls and MrChromebox that have forked. As far as serial programming, get a legitimate Pomona clip and save yourself the tears. You can flash the eeprom with a pi zero or better very easily. Some models like the HP z220 doesn't need a hardware flash even (but is obviously less secure). Interestingly, Chromebooks tend to have a write protect screw which has them near the top of the secure firmware hierarchy compared to most laptops. You can also put any OS on them after that.

It should be noted that the i7-2670qm Doesnt have any of the virtualization and v-pro features the dualcore i5 and i7 does. Which if you use virtualmachines a lot matters. Also the integrated graphics runs 200mhz lower on the quadcore i7.

Hello community! I installed i7 2760qm. Everything works ok except one thing. It could be some noise out from drossels i guess, near to button P/0 on the keyboard, not from cpu. How is it critical? If i remember correctly, it wasn't with stock cpu, power supply 90w. Thanks
I also have a 90 watt power supply and an i7-2760qm processor. I turned off the turbo boost on the processor and I'm running at a base frequency of 2.4 GHz. Thanks to the Samsung 860 EVO 500GB SSD and 8GB RAM, the processor runs fast and without turbo boost. In the "Power" section, set the "balance" mode. Processor status: on battery and power supply: minimum power - 0%, maximum power - 99%.

Yes it can be done but I believe you will need to use coreboot, I haven’t done it so I don’t have much info. ThinkPad forums or subreddit covers it though. Yes, the RAM can be upgraded. 👍🏼

You could try a different thermal paste and see if that helps. Alternative is to rig something custom with the fans or just downgrade back if it use to work fine.
90w is recommended also i recommend using something like Arctic MX4 for the CPU PS: someone on Reddit got a t430 cooler into a t420 while using this mod and they say it runs much cooler than the stock one btw disable the dGPU and use the iGPU it's much faster and you will get good performance in games

No worries! I'm using an extended battery pack and the original charger that the laptop came with, no problems. I have a more recent video with all the mods I have on my ThinkPad.

@@Frankiscool its not thermal paste i think its problem because of very small ariflow holes im gonna buy the cooling pad maybe this will help but ty for reply and help
@@vawolo4950 in the plastic bottom of the laptop with a 5-6mm drill, make many holes opposite the fan of the cooling pad, so that cold air gets into the laptop better. Clean the radiator of the cooling system from dust, disassemble the fan and put 3-4 drops of engine oil into the bearing.

Does the laptop have a rPGA 988b socket? Does the laptop have a discrete card (Nvidia/Radeon) or only an integrated HD Graphics 3000 video card? The socket type can be viewed through the CPU-Z program, and video cards can be viewed through Device Manager.
I think it would be better leave CPU of T420 as it is since it is not greatly improve performance. Instead adding more memory and change to SSD is better. Also when changing CPU, use electrostatic screwdriver instead of using paper clips.
Yeah just upgrading the disk to an SSD is a great improvement. Would definitely agree that just upgrading the memory and disk are enough for good gains.

It is possible but you will likely run into overheating issues. I would check the ThinkPad subreddit and do some digging there, not sure if you need anything else custom aside from the cooling.
why are you upgrading? to play games? not worth the upgrade.....Upgrade your desktop not your rinki dink laptop to play friggin games..plus Id rather go with your I5 setup..

Yes. That iGPU speed matters also for gaming (well, old games ofc)a and also turbo boost.. i7-2670qm has less turbo boost vs 2-core i7's
What bios version did you update to?
I heard some people say that the newer bios versions don't really play nice with this CPU.

No, I did not make any upgrades to my power adapter.

I would say there’s an increase, but not by a lot. Having 16GB of RAM and an SSD before this upgrade would be my recommendation.

Yeah, per intels page on the CPU it can support up to 32gb. I’m fine with 16gb though.

why are you upgrading? to play games? not worth the upgrade.....Upgrade your desktop not your rinki dink laptop to play friggin games..plus Id rather go with your I5 setup..
The negativity, living a sour life is bitter bruh. No but yeah, I don't recommend the upgrade to anyone unless they are doing it as a hobby. It's like why mod an old car? for fun.

I believe I’ve seen a couple of Windows users with this CPU, should be fine. To be sure I’d suggest you check out the thinkpad forums.
