    Did this upgrade along with a 1080p screen. Idle temps 45c - 50c browsing Internet 50c - 65c recommend downloading tp fan controller as well as cleaning out the fan used termal grizzly kryounaut on aida 64 stress test cpu temp levels out at 89c. Ran Aida 64 stress test for 30 minutes. Happy with the result as with the i5 I was getting similar temps anyway.

    I just upgraded my T420 today to i7-2670QM. Earlier I upgraded the display to 1080p. HDD to Samsung SSD 860 Pro.
    Next stop will be memory upgrade to 1866MHz and WiFi module to AX200.
    This definitely is fun. But man, that i7 is hot! Idling at 42C even with TG conductonaut

      Yeah for sure! There’s some people that go ahead and do a fan mod but I don’t think it even helps that much. Might have to do some research on that WiFi module, hadn’t heard about it. :)

      @@revraitah Google Coreboot and their site has everything you need. There are also projects like Skulls and MrChromebox that have forked. As far as serial programming, get a legitimate Pomona clip and save yourself the tears. You can flash the eeprom with a pi zero or better very easily.
      Some models like the HP z220 doesn't need a hardware flash even (but is obviously less secure).
      Interestingly, Chromebooks tend to have a write protect screw which has them near the top of the secure firmware hierarchy compared to most laptops. You can also put any OS on them after that.

    It should be noted that the i7-2670qm Doesnt have any of the virtualization and v-pro features the dualcore i5 and i7 does. Which if you use virtualmachines a lot matters. Also the integrated graphics runs 200mhz lower on the quadcore i7.

      in my laptop, I replaced the i3-2330m (35w) with the i7-2760qm (45w), and so that the laptop would not overheat, I turned off the turbo boost on the i7 processor and work at the base frequency. The performance suits me - 4 cores, 8 threads / 2.4 GHz.
      + 8GB RAM DDR3-1600 + SSD Samsung 250GB (Windows 10). In the stress test, the maximum temperature was 79*C, max TDP 30w.

    I think it would be better leave CPU of T420 as it is since it is not greatly improve performance. Instead adding more memory and change to SSD is better. Also when changing CPU, use electrostatic screwdriver instead of using paper clips.

    • @Frankiscool
      @Frankiscool  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah just upgrading the disk to an SSD is a great improvement. Would definitely agree that just upgrading the memory and disk are enough for good gains.

      It is possible but you will likely run into overheating issues. I would check the ThinkPad subreddit and do some digging there, not sure if you need anything else custom aside from the cooling.

    Hi,
    Just a few queries,
    1. What's the chipset on the motheboard? is it HM65?
    2. What is your feedback, since you upgraded? Heat, voltage ... any overheating problem?

    • @Frankiscool
      @Frankiscool  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Junaid Parvez 1. ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/53469/intel-core-i7-2670qm-processor-6m-cache-up-to-3-10-ghz.html 2. It definitely runs hot when doing things like video rendering, I would say that the speed is not really a huge difference. Definitely an upgrade I would only do if you’re doing it for fun.
