He has NEVER been considered a master at singing. it was his meaningful song-writing and the sort of ugly-but-sincere voice ---The Whole Folk Package-- that he was known for.
@@gardensofthegods Yes, true. So calling him a 'genius' is ALSO subjective. Having said that, many of the 'greatest' songwriters credit Dylan for changing the game, by writing PERSONAL/INDIVIDUAL songs rather than the droll pop stuff that preceded him.
I think I commented this before, but it took me a couple of listens to really love this. I can't get enough of it now. His voice is filled with such feeling. Ugh...
Dylan, the winner of the "Nobel Prize for Literature" in 2016. He is a songwriter, musician, visual artist, performer, etc., of the 20th and 21 st-centuries. Thanks for everything. This song is wonderful. This is so beautiful. Zeine, Bahia, Brazil. .

Plenty to say but do you actually like Bob Dylan ruining this beautiful song ? I have always been a lover of Dylan but sometimes he makes giant size mistakes and this is one of them.

bill white you so remind me of my dad in the 60's when I started listening to R&R. You could hear his mind slam shut clear across the street. Then as now people are talking about themselves not the music.
Dylan has always had many sides to his tunes and does what he pleases instead of trying to make hit records. Maybe all you people who hate this just aren't fucking old enough to realize that you don't live to serve others and don't care what everyone thinks about you. Open your minds people.
I love Dylan's occasional fragility - none of the manufactured perfection of many great musicians - I'm minded of something Leonard Cohen was told when he complained that he was no real singer - his mentor went, (I'm paraphrasing) "If I want great singing I'll go to the Met. If I want personality i'll happily listen to you." Bob Dylan may have vocal weaknesses from time to time but his over arching personality and what he shares is priceless.
You should remember this, that Bob Dylan is NOW among those Artists who don't look back ! ... "the little wheel spins and spins, while the big wheel goes around and around...
Well, it ain't Sinatra. Thank goodness. I guess I'm one of those people who likes music. If it's well-done, well-sung, well performed I'm on board. I've been riding Dylan's train almost from the beginning and I'll be there at the end - either mine or his. Well done, Bob. Thank you.
swatkiller546 How the fuck can you write such fucking bullshit? I love Dylan as an artist but he is letting himself and everyone else down here. The voice is pathetic. The notation is poor. The breath beneath the voice is unimaginatively bad. WOEful.
Amen Mr Grubbs. I read a Rolling Stone article once and the writer wrote " If Dylan went on tour with a travelin' circus, I would go see him". Been a Dylan fan since 1975 and never look back. If you don't get him, get the Hell out of the way! And don't show up at the San Antonio, Texas show booing your ignorant ass off...Let the Rain fall! My 10th show and counting!! Roe in SA, Texas
Roland Maldonado Great that you like bullshit man. What are you trying to say? Because he wrote a lot of magnificent songs (which he did) he is to be loved for singing this absolute tripe?
This shows respect for Sinatra, one of the greatest at phrasing of all time. It's a challenge for any singer to take it on. Dylan seems to love the depth and breadth of the American songbook, this is part of it, just as is his take on Chess Records, and his earlier takes on folk standards.
What do you people expect? You want Dylan to croon note for note with Sinatra? He couldn't do that in his 20's let alone his 70's. This is a passion project for Bob cause he truly loves Frank and his music. Jesus..ease up. Bob changed popular music as we know it...let's stop treating him like an American Idol contestant and start treating him like an artist that has earned the right to do WHATEVER THE FUCK he wants to. Way to go Bob...sounds good to these ears.
my goodness. such evisceration. so many cruel and hostile things said. bob recorded these intimate renditions because he was moved to do so. if you are moved by listening a connection has been made. such is art. if it's a gift to you receive it. if you think it's rubbish no one makes you listen.
I can certainly agree with those sentiments, Mr. Wilson. The offensive thing for me is those on this page who seek to nullify the opinions of those who don't love Dylan's interpretation here. By all means, people, listen if it pleases you, just don't tell others what cretins they are for not sharing your opinion.
Tony Marcus Oddly enough though, the majority of those treating others like cretins are the ones who don't like Dylan's interpretation. Not to mention the total disrespect for Dylan and his art.
TheSkinnyMoo Hmmm...perhaps we're reading different pages? I see comments like "you just don't get it you twat" and "patheic posers, hosers and wannabees", or, in your case, "you are a narrow-minded purist" directed at those who dare to find this performance less than stellar. All the comments I see from the other perspective are directed at the performance. Many of these comments, like mine, cite Dylan's importance in American music, but find the singing on this number painful. Unless you identify so strongly that you actually believe you ARE Dylan, someone finding that his singing this song lacks that certain everything shouldn't be construed as an attack on you.
Tony Marcus Well, I certainly heard dismissive and demeaning language from fans and non-fans alike. It's the adversarial and personal tone generally that's distressing.
Some people just don't get Dylan- I'm going to go with Dylan's intuition and foresight... And not fair weather fans or people that think they know more about interpreting a song than he does...
In a 1965 Time magazine interview, Dylan sardonically said, "...You have to listen closely, but I hit all those notes". He was sort of poking fun at himself and the interviewer, but it was basically a true statement for me. If he missed, he missed because he wanted to, and with conviction. He's the best singer I've ever heard. Even if the timbre of his voice wasn't your cup of tea, he still sang at the proper pitch. So I'm a bit saddened that he can't hit all the notes anymore. Not only that, but he listened to this, thought it was cool, and let the record company put it out as representative of his upcoming album. Listen to Nettie Moore on Modern Times for an intimately recorded, unbelievably moving song within the limits of his age-ravaged voice (while still hitting the notes). Still a Bob fan forever, but the glorious run may be over.
***** Bob sang several songs well. "Like a Rolling Stone", "All Along the Watchtower", "Knockin' on Heaven's Door" were some of them. Don't get overwhelmed by reputation. He was a fantastic creator and a so-so performer.
Like the other tracks on this new title, this is DREADFUL! If an unknown artist submitted this to a record label, they would laugh him out of the building! Back to some of the classic OLDER, great-sounding Dylan CDs. Sheesh!
Never been a Dylan fan, but this is a bold and brave move, and while it's not something I see myself listening to very often, I do appreciate it. It shows emotion indeed, and that's what really matters in music. Today's music is all perfect and shiny, but has left emotion behind. Music is not about pitch correction or sticking to a grid. Also, I'm all for good singers, but bashing Dylan for his shaky pitch here is pointless. It's like dissing Joy Division because Ian Curtis sang out of tune. That's just not what the music was about. Same goes for Dylan here, albeit in a different context.
Amazing comment I wish this could be used as a way of explaining music and Bob Dylan in general to many others... Honestly that is a fantastic way to put it.
I like Dylan's voice ... sometimes things that are polished are not always that beautiful because they can become all too common ... perhaps with the exception of the Angelic voice of Jackie Evancho
A shout out to Paul who nailed it to a barn door in the pouring rain outside of who knows where, let's say Hibbing.Well said my friend in Dylanesque. There r many lives to Bob and this is just the latest.I hope I get to hear the next one sung by Mr.D.Just to back up read the Lives of Bob Dylan by a guy named Bell.Peter behind my Judy
Bob has done it! This album is beautiful. I love the different arrangement. It's so poignant. As far as his voice goes, it's wonderful. Haters are gonna hate so just don't listen to the damn album then!!!!
Dylan is another universe. He does not give a good goddamn if people prefer Sinatra's style. It will be some time out of their minds before these tin eared critics quit booing and hooing, crying in their Indian gin, disembark their sinking Titanics to receive Dylan's melodic shelter against the stormy seas of patheic posers, hosers and wannabees. They didnt like him when he plugged in at Newport and now they dont want him to do anything but play the "golden oldies" of their miss spent youth. Every day is another revolution man.
The tin eared are the ones who can't hear that the cat can't sing at all. I love this repertoire AND I love many of the songs Dylan has written. If you're going to interpret songs that have been masterfully sung by others, it's incumbent on you to bring something new to them, and by that I don't mean crappy intonation. I realize there are those who will worship anything the guy does. You are of course welcome to do so, just don't condemn those whose opinions differ. You show your own narrowness by doing so.
Paul Grubbs I'm from the planet where people are allowed to hold differing opinions. I'd suggest you visit it someday. It's a far nicer place than the fascist one you apparently inhabit.
I respect Bob Dylan's will to record an album of this kind of covers that obviously must mean something to him. Still, what he did from Love and Theft on is, in my humble opinion, among the best he's ever made, save for the Christmas experiment, I guess (and maybe I should call this an experiment too?). Hence, I'd welcome new originals more warmly. I may not buy this album. But, hey, it's just my personal opinion and Dylan has my respect for doing precisely what he wants. Let's just hope he remains with us for long enough years to offer us great originals as he's been doing throughout several parts of his career and, to me (many may disagree) especially during this century of mostly empty music where he's been one of the few oasis.
Bill white Which comment do you deem pathetic? Mine? I'm expressing my views and I hope you're democratic enough to accept them. Otherwise, your five words look pathetic.
Jorge Simoes Firstly, you can't even count. I wrote six words. OK, I'll add to that, if you were to actually navigate the page you'd see that I replied to michael clarke. Now to get on with it: "I respect Bob Dylan's will to record an album of this kind of covers that obviously must mean something to him." is what you wrote. What a piece of shite! He's recording a few songs for a few mega dollars and he is singing this BADLY! Go for it! Express your views and come across as a complete bloody fool. Yes man, I'm democratic. Sure am. Make another stupid comment. I'm all for it.
Bill white Ok, I can't count (I'm not even checking) and I didn't notice you'd replied to someone else because it all goes to my mail. But you're ranting and you come out as way too cynical. I guess I won't be poorer if I buy this record too, your words make me want to buy it. Have a nice day! :)

Well, it ain't Sinatra. Thank goodness. I guess I'm one of those people who likes music. If it's well-done, well-sung, well performed I'm on board. I've been riding Dylan's train almost from the beginning and I'll be there at the end - either mine or his. Well done, Bob. Thank you.
Roll on Bob roll on... It's your life. And what a life it's been. 💙
I love Dylan no matter what he does...He is a gift from God......
swatkiller546 How the fuck can you write such fucking bullshit? I love Dylan as an artist but he is letting himself and everyone else down here. The voice is pathetic. The notation is poor. The breath beneath the voice is unimaginatively bad. WOEful.
I like these Recordings very much !
Bill white Ahhh Yes Exactly right. Like loving a BIG Bowl of Menudo!!!! Bob Dylan = Menudo. Nice comparison Mr Blanco...
I like the arrangement for this track. Love that Dylan paid tribute to Sinatra and the standards with his recent albums!
If only it had stopped at 2:19. The torture just went on! Tomorrow I'll post where the most out of key parts were. TH-cam's page will be overloaded.
❤❤❤Bob Dylan ❤❤❤
What a sad song, my God...
cant wait for the full album!!!!!
Greetings from Peru
His voice has only gotten better with age. I love his speaking voice too.
This shows respect for Sinatra, one of the greatest at phrasing of all time. It's a challenge for any singer to take it on. Dylan seems to love the depth and breadth of the American songbook, this is part of it, just as is his take on Chess Records, and his earlier takes on folk standards.
Growing on me every day
nice one, Bob.
amor,amor!
☺
Always liked Frank, always still like Bob. Some just don't get it & that's OK, I don't get Beiber.
That's a good sound for Dylan. Very enjoyable!
+Dave Kyle
LOL
you are not alone lol
are there more than the 2 songs on youtube that I can listen to? he sounds great to me...
Rachmaninoff.
Congratulations! You are the only who has recognised the real music of this song... Rachmaninoff, the greatest!
@@jadesjavier ...no, not the only one.
Bob Dylan's Not Dead Yet ❣ ☮
What do you people expect? You want Dylan to croon note for note with Sinatra? He couldn't do that in his 20's let alone his 70's. This is a passion project for Bob cause he truly loves Frank and his music. Jesus..ease up. Bob changed popular music as we know it...let's stop treating him like an American Idol contestant and start treating him like an artist that has earned the right to do WHATEVER THE FUCK he wants to. Way to go Bob...sounds good to these ears.
I just LOVE This
alan christon And what do you eat? I can't imagine.
After repeated listens I can't shake the image of Bogart and film noir. That's not a bad thing....
yes
oh! This is the album of Standards I heard about! cool He has done another absolutely wonderful ting!
my goodness. such evisceration. so many cruel and hostile things said. bob recorded these intimate renditions because he was moved to do so. if you are moved by listening a connection has been made. such is art. if it's a gift to you receive it. if you think it's rubbish no one makes you listen.
Amen
I can certainly agree with those sentiments, Mr. Wilson. The offensive thing for me is those on this page who seek to nullify the opinions of those who don't love Dylan's interpretation here. By all means, people, listen if it pleases you, just don't tell others what cretins they are for not sharing your opinion.
Tony Marcus Oddly enough though, the majority of those treating others like cretins are the ones who don't like Dylan's interpretation. Not to mention the total disrespect for Dylan and his art.

Hmmm...perhaps we're reading different pages?
Dylan sings Rachmaninoff!
***** Well said mate. I love the guy as a songwriter. Will never stop.
beautiful.

❤❤❤
Since I don't see my post, I'll repeat. I love the fact that he couldn't care less and just does what he wants.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
❤️❤️❤️
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
Just Bob. Great!
The 1800s called and they want this album back.
Its terrible... and I'm a Dylan fan...
Elizabeth Simpson It's poignant because of your personality. As far as his voice goes, it's a result of your tone deafness.
Bill white Gee Bill thanks!
Tony Marcus obviously you and I are from different planets. Let me guess- Uranus?
Paul Grubbs
I'm from the planet where people are allowed to hold differing opinions. I'd suggest you visit it someday. It's a far nicer place than the fascist one you apparently inhabit.
Apparently you think I give a shit.
Paul Grubbs
Why, no. It's absolutely clear that you don't have the capacity to.
He is a blues singer for sure.
Indeed.
michael clarke I truly detest such pathetic comments.
