Auckland Central Motorway

  • A little different to my usual videos but this is an off-peak southbound drive on Aucklands North-South Motorway (State Highway One) across the Auckland Harbour Bridge, through "Spaghetti Junction" and over the Newmarket Viaduct.
    This is the most heavily trafficked section of motorway in New Zealand , at its busiest point (near Newmarket) carrying around 110,000 vehicles per-day.
    I've noticed that 70% of my viewers are not in NZ so I thought I'd show a clip of our most complicated and busiest section of motorway, not spectacular by global standards I'm sure, but our entire population is only 5mil.
    Note - we drive on the left but many of our road markings and signs are similar to elsewhere if my travels and looking at Wandering Jeans interesting channel ( • Downtown Los Angeles N... ) of driving in Los Angeles is anything to go by.
    Japanese cars and SUV's dominate our vehicle landscape.
    If I get positive feedback on this video I'll consider other potentially very different "drives".

I’ll make some more of these in differing locations I think, thanks for the support 😀

    Nice ride Chris- you're a great driver!! Do they switch the lane back and forth manually? That seems like a lot of work, but also very safe. Spaghetti Junction looks really complicated! Enjoyed the sights that you pointed out along the way... I feel like I've had a mini visit to real life in Auckland!! :) 👍👍

    • @Chris-NZ
      @Chris-NZ  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jennifer , Yes the lanes on the bridge switch back and forth on weekdays , five towards the CBD in the morning and five in the reverse direction in the evening with four each way in the off peak and weekends .There are two big machines the size of locomotives that pick the concrete barrier up and move it one lane at a time, you can see one briefly if you freeze at 1:33 . The barrier is continuous like a giant chain. Its been in operation since 1990. A solution was needed after a series of fatal crashes on the curved approaches on the south side. There was an especially bad crash where an ED doctor from Auckland hospital was killed with it being recorded on the bridges CCTV , this of course pushing those with the $$ to act where as a few drunks offing themselves previously was some how “inevitable” . Working with crash data at the time we called this the “judge and jury “ mentality. Thankfully that kind of thinking has receded somewhat . Yes, I have a few km under my belt, estimated it one day - over 900,000 km with 150,000 of that in my job - road safety and road engineering - tends to get you out and about a lot - best part of the job of course 😀👍

    • @JenniferLupine
      @JenniferLupine ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Chris-NZ Ah, so this was your specialty! 👌 In Seattle they have reverse lanes for rush hour and weekends- with just arrows above to tell if you are green to go or red to not go- I don’t drive there in rush hour so I’m
      Not sure how well it works- Your solution seems much safer for all. Too bad about the Dr., but I’m
      sure this ended up saving lots more lives!

    • @Chris-NZ
      @Chris-NZ  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JenniferLupine hi, yes we have those lane use arrows in a couple of places as well, personally I hate them and never drive in the one that swaps . I’m sure the bridge barrier has saved many lives over that 32 years of operation. 😀
