I think it was in 2008 I begged Bruce to build me a 20 1/2 scale Gallatin A model D hole. He didn't think it would work, too short. But he did and with that same faded leather color as they named it. I guess I was THE pioneer. Wish had sprung for the F with f holes. Money matters. Maybe the f holes would be a little brighter. I was told by TMS that Weber sells more of these 20 1/2 scale octave than the longer scale. I'm just a trouble maker lol
Great comparison, Russ. To my ear, the Gallatin might be better tuned up to ADAD or even DGDG (with different string gauges), because I'm not convinced by the lower registers with that scale length. But then the Gallatin might be punchier and better for tunes (GDAE), while the Sage might be more useful for comping (GDAD) like a shorter scale bouzouki. My two cents worth .. for what it's worth (about two cents)!
I love and appreciate the tonality differences between the two. Excellent presentation. ty 🎧
@@stevec.1802 thanks!
Excellent. This was helpful. My project is 19 1/2" scale.
@@2old4u you may need some pretty heavy gauge strings with that short scale.
@@dobrodoc may I ask the gauge strings you used on your 20" scale?
@@2old4u I used medium gauge dadarrio mandola strings , which were slightly thicker than octave mandolin strings. This is what Weber recommended. EJ76

Nice playing and they both have good but different tone. F holes verses d hole.
Thanks!
The smaller scale is definitely easier to play but the tone is the tradeoff
I’d be curious to hear a comparison of shorter scale to longer scale, both arch top with F holes.

Interesting, you might be right .
