    I recommend putting on your costume and wear it around the house for 15-30 minutes. You'll find out what will break or chafe before you are stuck in a con.

    You forgot Renaissance Fairs ! We had a lovely Ren Fair just north of Seattle last week. Each day there were different themes (IE: “Steampunk”, “Fantasy” , “Pirate Day” etc.) …so everyone could be included. Of course there were beautiful suits of armor and lots of traditional Ren Fair garb, but what a lovely mix it was !

      Right! I was just coming here to say that! I work RenFaires. I see some of the most amazing cosplays there. I wish I could share photos. But people don’t even care if they’re in theme or not. They made an amazing outfit and the Renaissance Faire is just one of the best opportunities for them to display it and be in character.

    I've worked stage production on masquerade balls, and learned a few things over my time. The theatre, the story, the "play" part of cosplay is so important.
    Suffice to say that Captain Jack Sparrow isn't Captain Jack Sparrow without the gestures.

    My wife used to make and sell anime cosplay outfits back in the early 2000s. Back then the sales were all through ebay or forum commissions; this was back before the term 'cosplay' had escaped the anime community and gone widespread. As I recall, she had a reputation at the time for making some of the best Sailor Moon bootcovers available.
    (See, it is - or was - near-impossible to find the red or blue knee-high boots that Sailor Moon and Sailor Mercury wear in uniform, so cosplayers made covers, usually in a stretch PVC with elastic at the top and bottom, for other boots that would have the appropriate patterning. She was helped by using a serger rather than a sewing machine on certain things, though I'm now fuzzy on the details.)
    I still have an outfit from that anime's miniboss, Nephrite, that she got tailored for me on exchange from another cosplayer; I should see if it still fits, and maybe do sone updates. See, Nephrite's thene was astrology, and one of his big tricks was manifesting a big orrery/star chart around him; modern cosplayers and the miniaturization of technology since then make me wonder if I could use something like a set of rangefinders and pico projectors to projection map a star field around him. Hmm...

    I’m going to add Renaissance Faires to your list of places to get pieces for cosplay. Especially leather and armor based ones. Rennies are huge nerds and geeks and love seeing what they can and can’t do with their chosen mediums. If they don’t have pieces already made, or in your size it’s one of the absolute best places to commission the artist directly for what you need/want. And they’ll have a shop full of stuffs they have made so you’ll be able to see and feel the quality of their work before you order.

    I gather there’s been drama about Jayne’s iconic earflap hat from “Firefly”, both getting finished hats and also patterns to make it, because Fox became very possessive and tried to stamp out anyone selling hats and patterns without their express permission. So now they often get called things like “cunning hats” or “space cowboy hats”. Because it’s absurd to try to copyright a knitted striped earflap hat with a pompom on top!

    On storytelling and detail, I’m reminded of when Bernard Hill spoke about seeing his Theoden armor for the first time. He said that even the inside was engraved with great detail that only he would know was there, and would never be on camera. It did give him the impression that it was armor fit and made for a king, and he felt that come through in his acting the part.
    On wearing costumes, movie premiers are a good one. I remember some friends and I got dressed in Viking garb and went to the opening of 13th Warrior. Other patrons were taking pics of us and thought we were part of the opening night 😂

    When I was in college, maybe a year after Revenge of the Sith came out, someone was walking across campus in an Anakin Skywalker outfit. Full on with the cloak and lightsaber hanging from his belt, with a bookbag stylized to look like a pouch that wouldn't look out of place for a Jedi. I was on a walkway and he was a floor below me walking across a grass field between buildings and I shouted out to him and asked why he was dressed up. His reply: "It's Friday!"

    More places to cosplay: Masquerades (my favorite is coming up in LA next weekend). Theme events like Pirate weekends. Trooping with groups such as Rebel Legion, 501st, Avengers Initiative. Some people cosplay at Ren Faires, which bugs me personally because I would like it to stay more on theme, but eh. Or if you're brave, put it on and just go to the grocery store, especially if it's some kind of related day like May 4th.

    I usually cosplay characters that wear tactical type clothing or similar to that, so what i usually do is alot of research if the pieces are actually based off of a real life thing ( usually is the case ) and try to buy that and if it isn't i sew it ;)! And also sometimes vintage clothing stores have those exact pieces for a low low price too!
    And if that doesnt work out its always good to surf instagram for artists that make masks or props and comission them ^-^ i met a friend of mine that way and he makes beautiful masks!

    as a cosplay photographer based in Italy I'll add some things to the brilliant advice you've already given:
    - where to buy cosplay pieces: Check your local communities (depending on what social they use) and ask around. There's a big market of used cosplays (at least in Italy) that have been made smartly enough to be sized for another person with straps and elastic material (where applicable, and as usual downsizing is easier than upsizing). For wigs only: buy the most color accurate wig you can find, even if it's just huge and wild, and then have a cosplayer or a wig stylist style it for you in the shape and curlyness you need.
    - where to wear cosplay outside of cons: best advice is photoshoots like you've said (and there's a huge variety of those), but also you can organize picnics and afternoons in public parks. You can also wear specific cosplays for movie premieres in theathers (here it's pretty big for Marvel and DC movies). If flash mobs ever become a thing again, cosplay was also popular and fun in those
    Keep up the great work!

    My wife used to live in Queens, NY, not too far from Rubies. We used to go to the small retail room at the factory and look through the damaged/discount rack. I bought a really thin cloak with a fur colar. Apparently, it was for a (Danny DeVito) penguin costume but was cut at the wrong angle. I used it for a pirate costume then my wife took it, trimmed it with some ribbon, cut it even, and used it as a Klingon battle cloak. We still have it in the closet.

    I was at a small con a few months ago where Tyler Hoechlin was attending and did a "Superman & Lois" Bizarro. First time I'd done a full cosplay including makeup and I was so nervous about doing it but that version of the character spoke to me and I wanted to do it. I got some great feedback from Tyler himself and he loved that I'd got a lot of the subtleties he'd put in to the character.
    As a newbie to it myself, I'd say to anyone wanting to cosplay to listen to Adam's advice (I know I did), go for it and have fun with it.

    Dumpster diving has contributed to 30-50% of the costumes and outfits I make. I don't hear people talk about this. Not only have I found more than enough fabric but EVA foam sheets (more than I can ever use), paints, dyes, glues, wigs, endless plastic gear, and gobs of discarded costumes from last year. I have a Fortnite battle axe that had chipped foam which I fixed, coated in black flex seal and repainted... better and stronger.
    Don't be afraid to check the garbage because I have saved SO MUCH shit from going to landfills. Save it all because chances are your friends or peers will need what you don't use.
    Or sell it.

As are many other SW unofficial costume groups here as well as the endorsed groups like 501st, Rebel Legion, Mando Mercs etc. And I always see people cosplaying as Ghostbusters at local events and outdoor festivals we go to playing up to the public in character. There's lots of opportunities out there to cosplay as well recognised characters even if you need to reserve less well known obscure ones for cons.

    My thing is I kinda just try to gain as much information as I can about a certain cosplay or piece of a costume from google searches, Facebook groups, and discord servers. Once I have a good understanding of what is out there, I’ll determine how much I’m willing to spend, and which option I’m going to purchase. And if I can’t find anything I’ll get something similar and modify the heck out of it until it is accurate!

    The old days, a ‘costume call’ or show was the standard, you go on stage, your name and costume is called out, you do a turn or three in front of the judges and exited the stage. Votes tallied and winners announced. Once in a while a group would do a little performance (ranging from quite epic to so very cringe) and that started to get special awards. The term cosplay is taken from the Japanese fandom and the whole ‘walking around in character’ used to be called ‘hall costuming’. Usually hall costumes weren’t judged or awarded.
    Hall costumes were meant for movement and comfort and the show costumes would tend to be the big, fragile, hot and can’t see a thing out of them deals. 😁
    I have to say, the level of skill and craftsmanship, combined with the evolution and invention of materials nowadays makes for some amazing costumes out there.

    • @unsoundmethodology
      @unsoundmethodology ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah, back when my wife and I could get to cons - late '90s, early 2000s - this was the way things worked. I've sometimes wondered if the disdain I've sometimes seen from Western cosplayers when told someone didn't make their own outfit, and the way that's completely absent in Japan, comes out of the "contest" origins of the hobby.
      (One of my wife's biggest show presentations was a re-enactment of a sequence in a Sailor Moon movie where all the Sailor Senshi powered-up for a big attack, including the bit where all the colored parts of their costumes turned white; she made all eight costumes with the quick-change special effect, plus the one for the villain of the piece.)

      It's interesting how the average quality of costumes has somehow dropped, though.

    • @unsoundmethodology
      @unsoundmethodology ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thomasbecker9676 I'd say that's less actually true than the result of a survivorship bias. Folks have always had a range of costume budgets and qualities ranging from "shoestring" to "GDP of a small European nation", but when you look back at older cosplay photos, the ones you see are the ones that got saved: either the best of the best, or notable for some other reason. If a random cosplayer in a Tennessee convention hallway this year wouldn't have won first prize at Anime Expo in 2003, it's hardly a decline in the hobby.
      To my eye, the best of today's outfits are substantially better than the best when I was frequenting cons, which I largely attribute to the development of technique and the availability of materials.

    • @steveharrison9901
      @steveharrison9901 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@unsoundmethodology
      Well there’s so much ego and gatekeeping in American cosplay fandom, of course there’s intense jealousy for the Japanese costumers. But they don ‘t wish to acknowledge that most everything fandom-wise tends to be done by ‘circles’ and it’s natural for people who have skills to do work for people who have… what, the ego? the nerve? the confidence? to dress up (thus ‘standing out’) and be seen by tens of thousands of complete strangers at Comic Market and other festivals.
      Yes you can buy an outfit from Cospra but many still modify and assessorize the living daylights out of such things.
      And if you’re like me liking the XXL size shirt you’ll NEVER find any Japanese pre-made that would ever fit. 😁
      Kudos on that Sailor Moon cosplay btw. I bet that was an incredible thing to see and a nightmare to maintain. And I would bet that there are tools and materials now that would let you do that in an even more spectacular way.

    • @steveharrison9901
      @steveharrison9901 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thomasbecker9676 well has it really? Or is it just too many people doing the same stuff and few really trying to dip into the huge history of anime for unique or dramatic cosplay?
      I mean look at most of the ‘hot flavor of the day’ anime that makes the rounds. It’s pretty homogenized, isn’t it? School uniforms of one stripe or another, variations on the Kimono and Happi coat, video games playing ‘goth Lolita is still cool, yes?’ and the ever present ‘tactical’ stuff.
      But you know, what people like is what they should do for their happy buzz. There’s no shame in that.

    I remember when it was just called "costuming," and "cosplay" was the anime costumers. Those were the good old days, before every costume was minimal-effort, EVA and 3D print...stuff.

    I have heard Adam call himself a Storyteller a lot, and I wonder if I should also call myself one. But it doesn't quite feel right for me, even though I have written many stories, I have had dreams, and sometimes realities, of making short films, I have drawn comic strips, and I have acted in community theatre. That's all story telling. But it doesn't feel right to call myself that.
    However, one thing that I do, whenever I make something (be it art or writing) is I always wonder about the events that led up to this moment I am portraying, and the events leading away from it after, which means that each decision I make about what goes where and why has a story-based reason. I guess I am a storyteller. It just feels weird to say it of myself.

      I think Adam meant it's a very _low_ signal to noise ratio. The ratio of desirable results to undesirable is very low in that situation.

    While I agree that we're always telling a story by presenting ourselves to the world in any way (intentionally/consciously or not), I believe that's different from costuming, because a costume is artifice and fiction. As a member of subculture and a collector of interesting decor and clothing, I feel upset when people perceive what I'm wearing as "a costume". My original education is in set and costume design as well as concept-based art and I worked as a theater production assistant, so I know both realms intimately, and I could put together a costume if I wanted, but I'm more interested in expressing myself in dress I feel belongs to , rather than a character concept. I think our culture has forgotten the art of ... a more ritualistic way of assembling outfits (beyond weddings and funerals). Certain things in our world certainly carry the criteria of cosplay (namely all of the suit and tie jobs, and possibly other things). But generally, I'm not dressed "as" anything, and I think people would feel weird or offended if someone put it that way. We dress [ adverb ], or we dress [like a real xy]. We all wear many hats, it's good to live out as many nuances of our complex identities as possible. My dentist probably still is a dentist when he goes home and takes his coat off in the evening, though.

    my sister married a man (first marriage) and for his bachelor party they dressed him up as the devil and if you were the bachelor you were to act a fool(e) and go out on the town. NOBODY else was in costume and he was the hit of the barhop. their tradition was from Amsterdam and was awesome.
    ( the costume was a cape and horns, nothing special. and the bachelor party almost outlasted the marriage! LOL)

    A great interesting detail with no answers on a costume/ Cosplay is for Butch from Pulp Fiction. I’m working on doing a cosplay for him and he has on his right arm the name “Kathy” tattooed and there is no real life nor in universe answer for it. My assumption is it’s Butches Mothers name as no one has one for her, and that she died at some point.
