Anyone know how to tell if Freon is in an AC? I have a large, commercial unit from a hotel. It has 2 large radiators with copper tubing on each end. One of the tubes is missing which leads me to think that the Freon's already out. Haha. Detective work!
Safety Warning - DO NOT smelt your own copper. It used to be banned - but Beryllium is now being added to some copper, (especially in electronics.) It's worse than asbestos. Asbestos is "nice" - giving you a typical 30 years to live after exposure - beryllium gives you a year or two, typically. If you live, you have the equivalent of asbestos lungs and COPD the rest of your shortened life. The beryllium dust is toxic, so are fumes from smelting. 1 exposure can be fatal. Scrappers, scrap yard workers, and especially Hanford Nuclear Superfund Cleanup crews - are starting to succumb to it in greater numbers. Numbers we haven't seen in a long time. Where use is legal, foundries give workers protective equipment. But now a increase in cases has come about - because everyday folks, ignorant about metallurgy and fumes - are exposing themselves. (By the way - beryllium is the blue dust found in microwave magnetrons too. Don't ever open one.) Until people wake up to the danger, and it gets banned - consider no copper safe. Handling it is ok - but it's not safe to smelt, or be around a yard where boxes of electronics are compressed, or shredded, creating dust. I shall now, always, wear a mask to yards and launder my clothes after. Google up "berylliosis." Some stuff will make your blood run cold.
😧 really?!? WOW. That’s... something I need to learn about. I’ll have to do some proper verification of course but if that’s the case, people need to know.

When it comes to stainless steel the spark test with a grinder works, stainless only sparks a little bit. Steel shred/iron doesn’t matter though because my yards just take everything as tin shred except for auto cast (brake drums/rotors). If I’ve got a cast iron bathtub I can talk to them about a better price but for the most part it all just goes in the same.
Information.. follow "New" copper on the market for market price. Now most small dealers sell to a medium dealer or "regional satellite yards" Small dealers sell to them at 20-30 cents American Bellow market. A good place will try and make 10 cents per pound. So if copper is 3 dollars a pound on "Big market" then small dealers at $2.70. You the seller should be $2.60. This would be a good way to see where you stand. This is not a perfect formula but is pretty standard. Sometimes individual demand for loads can close the gap. And sometimes secondary markets can create oversupply. Most other things are market speculation or basically"what it looks like it is going to do" But most of these drive the "Big market" so all washes down to small dealers. Small dealers move stuff weekly or biweekly. Big dealers will move full orders to Mills or overseas shipping. Look for this because Bigger yard pays more money. But sometimes small yard is better for distance. Think of it like driving for cheaper gas "do I drive 30 miles to save that nickel a gallon on my gas? " So use your phone and save the trips also these places can be very competitive so don't be bashful, gently price dropping better prices from other yards can help. But do not try to bs em they will know. But you may be able to close the gap without the travel on your part. Good luck all. Just trying to help. Lifetime scrapper and yard owner and operator. My family started from nothing. Just 75 dollars and an old pickup truck. And my dad lost money on his first deal lol. So keep at it . Love this channel and the community.

Thub, when it comes to Gold, Silver and to s lesser extent Copper what is driving the price increase is inflation. Governments around the world are printing money and spending it like never before. This leads to the dollar losing value. Thus inflation. Investors seek Gold and Silver as safe havens. The laws of Supply and Demand then kick in, dramatically increasing the price. Video games I am only guessing are increasing in value due to a combination of the weaker dollar and more people staying at home during this year.
