  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 6 ม.ค. 2019
  • This video was recorded on January 7th at about 12:10am on Whitemud Drive at the 50th Street intersection in Edmonton Alberta. The petrochemical splitter is heading to Heartland Petrochemical Complex, which is currently being built outside Fort Saskatchewan Alberta.
    This particular splitter separates propylene from propane, which is then processed into a recyclable plastic known as polypropylene.
    Major Contractors for this Job are:
    Dacro Industries - www.dacro.com/
    Inter-pipeline - www.interpipeline.com/
    Mammoet Canada - www.mammoet.com/

    Was there, standing on the roadside after getting a call from a buddy at the fab shop. Not the first time I've managed to be on hand for one of those moves, either there or on 99th St. just N of Whitemud. Most of the 99th St. loads were headed up to Ft. Mac. Once upon a time, all the trucks would have been from Premay. Some other people probably remember when they were Alberta's own heavy-haul outfit. There's a video of one Premay move kicking around here somewhere. The loads just keep getting larger. Mammoet certainly have an enormous amount of equipment and plenty of experience to get the job done, as well as operating in many countries. But once upon a time we did these types of moves using Alberta-based contractors, and they were also impressive to see at work.

      A friend who worked in the electrical controls business gave me an inside tour of a refinery in Burnaby when it was in shutdown. Inside a cracking Tower was a second most interesting thing I saw there. The most interesting though was this Platinum mesh screen that they used for Catalyst in some of the reactions. Judging by looking feel alone I would have assumed it was a very fine silvery silk material, this stuff was apparently worth about $20,000 per square meter and this was back in the 90s

    The great thing about the oilsands is all that stuff has to be moved around and assembled in Alberta. The Lng port they are making for north Bc was all pre made in Australia.
    Despite what Trudeau thinks these are jobs of real value and it’s important we stop letting them slip away from this country. The service sector just not provide the quality jobs these type of industries do.

      The number of places in North America where you can build something like this you can put on one hand. If you go and read the book on constructing the Mount Palomar 200 inch telescope, there's a section that they did just on the Horseshoe Mount built by GM that weighed approximately 1.2 million pounds and was so large that they could not have it entirely inside and one arm of the Horseshoe had to be outside the storage area undercover. And they still managed to machine it to tolerance of two 100s of an inch edge to edge

      This is an awesome comment. The OP is clearly a dispatcher or logistics sales-person and has dealt with idiots trying to cut down the transport company bidding.
      I am a Class 1 AND have done dispatching for decades. I HATE the industry. It is so conniving and dishonest. State side AND in Canada. Power only, FTL, LTL, jeep & buggy, remote wheel decks, trains, tankers, drop decks, chassis & sea can, etc. Everyone is a greedy idiot. Always undercutting the value of the workers to save thwir company every penny.

    I’d love to hear the technical reason why that thing couldn’t have been made in pieces and assembled on site.
    It just seems insane to have to move such a large single piece of anything that size so far that you need that many tractors and trailers to move it.
    Also.... every single person involved in moving that thing is a badass!!! From the drivers to the spotter to the riggers, planners, engineers.... EVERYONE deserves a friggen medal for moving that damn thing.... absolutely amazing feat

    • @gavinjohnson3387
      @gavinjohnson3387 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Pressure vessels have to be fabricated under specific engineering standards which can rarely be achieved in an operating plant/facility. Sometimes large vessels are constructed on site in new facilities which do not have the same hazards and limitations as operating plants.

    Somebody needs to make a video about how they manage a load like that, with multiple trucks pulling and pushing - especially the pushers. Are the drivers controlling the power in the conventional way or is there some kind of automated synchronizing system. One driver at the back pushing too hard could make a real mess of it. Are all the drivers steering or are all but the lead driver just trailing?

    • @Mr_Smarty_Pants
      @Mr_Smarty_Pants 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Each of the six trucks, 2 pulling and 4 pushing have drivers controlling them in the normal sense. Each trailer has someone riding and controlling the steering of each trailer. All trucks and trailers have a number...lets say the lead pull truck is 'No 1'...maybe the right front push truck is 'No 4' etc etc...everyone has a 2 way radio and there will be a "Truck Foreman' controlling and guiding all 6 trucks over the radio as he views the job externally from the road. Of course the application of power and steering by pull trucks and push trucks has to be strictly coordinated...over the radio the ' Foreman' might issue commands regarding gearing and throttle position and also feedback from drivers re rpm as an indication if the truck is managing the load for a given gear selection and throttle setting. Examples "all trucks in 3rd gear?...'truck 1 and 2 holding 1600rpm?'...."all push trucks wideopen in 3rd?...etc etc

    Hi Bob, I'm a journalist with the German news magazine stern.de. Fantastic shot of the splitter! We were hoping to get your permission to use a few clips from your footage for a short news segment on our website. We would of course give you on screen credit and could link back to your channel if desired. Please let me know here if this is an option or via mail: licensing@stern.de. Thanks and looking forward to hearing from you!
