Beautiful town, the Germans in ZA never get much attention, yet there were quite a few. von Stutterheim was part of the British German Legion. Lekker engine museum, quite impressive! That William Penn Oll sign would be from my home State. The tree lines in that town are stunning.
We've come across several places with German connections and, since we find any bit of history interesting, we're happy to share what we find. Interesting about the William Penn Oil sign. ⛽ The museum was super cool and such care is taken to restore and display these machines from the past. The trees and the forest gave us the natural beauty we're always searching for. Glad you enjoyed. 🚙🌳
Very glad you visited Vinkel & Koljander! We enjoyed a delicious breakfast at their place - beautiful place (and friendly people)! And there are lovely hiking trails in the Kologha Forest - we did a short trail up to the waterfall and thoroughly enjoyed it. Next time we will definitely visit the Engine Museum - thanks for the tip!
My hometown, raised and schooled. Best plqce to grow up in. My Gran worked at Harveys, my mom at the Railways. I matriculated 1987 and ha e been back only 3 times but my heart remains there.
Hi you two! It looks like you're out of the rain and back under the blue skies again! Stutterheim is a beautiful town. I love those oak trees and others lining the streets. The forest has its own atmosphere with that small stream running through. Not quite the Black Forest, but very inviting. The engine museum is very interesting, but why in Stutterheim? (Maybe I missed hearing something?) Even if a train stops there only once a week, it is good to see a functional station. It was sad to see abandoned little church. It should be looked after as a heritage site. The Vinkel en Koljander 'mall' was interesting with such a large variety of stuff and services for sale in such a relatively small space. Some good entrepreneurship at work there. With the Amathole mountains in sight, I was wondering if the next trip would be in that direction😉 But wherever, I'm ready to go! Keep safe!
The weather cleared up after the dreary first few days and we were so happy about the blue skies and the sunshine! ☀️ We loved the trees in town and the forest! 🌳 The story of the Engine Museum is very interesting, you can read all about it at stutterheimtourism.co.za/activities/52-stationary-engine-museum. Super cool to see such dedication and passion from folks. 🚙🛩️💡
Hi guys the area is full of live stock and very busy for a small town but again its got a world record biggest stationary engine museum in the southern hemisphere!!! .down a gravel road an historical ruins of a old mission station and church was intriguing. What a fined that museum was very impressed so many things caught my eye the jet engine that flew rolling stones and the spit fire engine imagine what it's been through mind blowing. The station is functioning and the track repaired great news and the trains go from joberg to East London 👍 sounds very positive. Again plenty of churches. Love the tin roof houses and the oak trees lining the road the history of the name is brilliant that guys name was super long !!! Intriguing about the British German brigade the bowls club was fantastic and also the views of the mountains the old building vinkel Yolanda looked great the banter over the food made me chuckle Sonia comment it tastes healthy is some I'm going to use also how you chatting to the vet definitely friendly people I must not forget about Jeff also very accommodating loved the forest and the rushing water very atmospheric second biggest in South Africa these little towns never fail to impress thanks for taking me along cheerio till the next one
Geoff was so kind to open the Museum for us and what a visit! We thought the biggest in the Southern Hemisphere, but it's the biggest of its kind in the world! 🤩 And the second largest forest in SA, that's also very cool! 🌳💚 Sonia's food was as green as the trees and a little too healthy for her that day, I think! 🥗🤣 It was gut-wrenching to see the Bethel Mission Church looking like that. 💒😢
Ok the engine museum I had no clue of. Thanks for showing us. I was super impressed by all the different motors. Something my dad would of Loved.❤ stutt is a lovely town always has been. It has grown alot was my impression. Lovely green forests and lots of grass. Safe travels and keep it coming. Loving this trip so much 🎉🎉❤❤🎉🎉
Yup, I hear you. I think our two dads would've loved the museum too, they wouldn't have wanted to leave. 😍 Lots of green in Stutt and surrounds, it was wonderful to wander a little way into the forest and hear water flowing. So peaceful. 🌳🌊 I'm glad you're enjoying the beautiful Eastern Cape! 🚙🤩
Hi Curtis Sonia and Dusty, love it love it love it, you certainly know how to plan these trips, finding the gems, filled with magical places ❤, safe journey ❤
The beauty is that we don't plan a lot, other than our basic route. It's the thrill of happening upon these incredible sights in each town or place we get to visit, that makes us hungry for more. Thank you for being excited about all the things with us. Variety is indeed the spice of life! 🚙🤩
Stutterheim is beautiful. The Engine Museum is outstanding. What an interesting place. I always get nevous when you go into derelict buildings Curtis. Thanks for a great visit.
The Engine Museum was fantastic, I'm happy to hear that you enjoyed it too! That old Lutheran Church deserved being explored, it was a very sad sight, but still very beautiful in its derelict state. 💒😢 You don't have to worry, we're super vigilant and always check out our surroundings properly before I get out. I appreciate your concern. 😊
Thanks for sharing your travels, you both do a fantastic job . I am a South African living in the USA and absolutely love watching your videos. I treat myself to watching an episode each night . I used to live in the Transkei and it was so interesting when you mentioned the shipwreck of the Sao Joao in your Port Edward episode . There was a very similar Shipwreck two years later in 1554 , The Sao Bento near Msikaba in Transkei, not far from the Sao Joao. It was also a Portuguese vessel . The survivors were also forced to march to the Maputo river . I used to collect the red carnelian beads that washed up on the pebble beaches that were from the shipwreck. Thank you once again for sharing ,keep travelling and stay safe .
Thank you! I'm so glad you enjoy our videos as much as we enjoy having you on board. 🚙😁 How interesting the info about the Sao Bento shipwreck and that you still used to pick up beads from that very ship! Thank you for sharing that with us. 👌🏻⛵
I love watching your journey throughout this beautiful country of ours. It is on my bucket list to do a long road trip around South Africa. Just one question if I may. Why didn't you show us the Catholic Church. It looked interesting.
No particular reason. We enjoy a wide variety of sights on our travels, not only churches. So some we will stop at and I'll take a walk around and others we'll just drive by with a mention. 🚙💒 These videos are essentially our memories of our travels, so we'd like to look back on them one day and see as much variety as possible. Thank you for watching.
A small town with so much to see. The engine meusuem is great. To think it is situated there. How sad to see the Bethel church in shambels. What a beaut of a building but totally neglected. Wow. The vegetation is stunning. It has so much character. Thanks for this trip. Never been there before now. Next trip i will be there
We had fun exploring this town with the variety of interesting places and things on offer. From engines to forest! I was so glad to get into the museum, it was really cool. 👌🏻 We had no idea that the second largest forest in the country was here, that was quite awesome to see. 🚙🌳 The Bethel Mission Church was heartbreaking. 😢💒
Thank you very much I am writing from Perth in Western Australia. I just happen to stumble across your video and it brought back memories of over 55 years ago. That school you passed that they were busy renovating I attended in 1968 to 1970. The first part you ride past was were the whole school gathered for morning assembly. I stayed at the hostel that was just next to the school. We were 4 children of our family that attended Stutt School. The headmaster was Mr Moore and he was also the hostel father. Thank you so much for the good memories.
My grandfather, Howard Bostock and his brother Ralph, helped to grow Stutterheim in the 40s and 50s when they established the Bostock store there along with building a bank in order to get a bank to come into the area to work with farmers. They also instrumental in getting the railway working for the farmers to get their produce out of the area as well as getting materials in. Their influence spread to Mtatha and East London.
I have only been through Stutterheim as a small child. On our way from the Free State to eastern cape. After a long trip we children were bored and tired, and the name Stutterheim was funny. "St-t-t-t-tuttterheim" would be repeated, followed by a stentorian "Shaddup! Or else!!" from an irate father. Thank you for showing us this beautiful town. Its not too far from my favourite place, which is Hogsback. Love the forest particularly, would love to walk there.
Fond memories of road trips with your folks, that's special. 🚙👨👩👧👦 We heard a few Stutterheim jokes while in town, but I'd rather not share for fear of offending someone. 🤫 The forest was very calm and peaceful, it's a lovely place where you would thoroughly enjoy walking around. 🌳💚
The Engine Museum was such a worthwhile stop, I was super happy to get in there. 💡🛩️ The train station being operational was for sure another highlight, we don't get to hear that too often on our travels. 🚙🚉
My husband an I are in search of our forever home. We want to live in a small town with as much greenery and an abundance of nature. Someone on social media told me about Stutt and I ran to uncle Google for more info and came across your video. You have no idea how much I appreciate this video. You just fired up my interest in this place. THANK YOU!!!!!
Hi guys. Once again a town where family lived, I tell you I have such a big family that have lived in these little towns @ one time or another, yet again I saw more on this trip than I've seen in by being there so many times, thank you that was amazing, 💪🚙
You know we like sniffing and scratching out stuff which most folks won't even look at twice, but that's what makes travelling so enjoyable for us! 🚙🤩 I'm glad that we're visiting to many towns your family lives or used to live in, hopefully you recognise some landmarks along the way. Thanks for coming along again, we always appreciate that! 👌🏻
Can't wait for you guys to go to the northern part of Eastern Cape in Molteno my hometown and other towns like Sterksroom, Burgersdorp, Lady Grey, Venterstad, Lesseyton, James town and Aliwal North
Very nice video.. we live in Cathcart, 1 town up from Stutt. That construction in the early part of the video is unfortunately the municipal buildings they burnt down a few years back. Now the tax payers need to rebuild it. 😢
Good morning Team. You have an invitation to go back to Stutt for another visit to see many things you missed. Let me know if you would like to arrange this… taking you up on your comments to “come back again” 🎉
Thank you for your kind invitation. 😊 There are just too many other places waiting to be explored though, so we won't be back anytime soon. We're never too fussed about anything we happen to miss or overlook in a place we visit. We have a very limited time on the road, so we see what we can and move on. 🚙😁
Stutt and Cathcart has bankrupt municipalities due to corruption. Extremely bad inverstments for anyone thinking of buying there. In 8 years the roads in bith towns has degraded from tar roads to dustroads, just a small example, the municipal services you pay for does not exist. Everything is hanging on by a thread of grace. Water is mostly brown and unusable, some days there are pressure other days no water at all. Electricity is available but as soon as the smallest of rain or wind comes up expect to have no electricity sometimes for days. This is the reality of rural living in the EC. So things like solar and boreholes is the very top of your list in this areas. 😊😊
Dear Dust Bugs Old towns in Freestate: Warden - you missed the beautiful old church Vrede You missed the old Pastorie and quite a few beautiful sandstone houses still being occupied ( Memel ?) Frankfort
Please read a little bit more before visiting these towns Remember the farmers of those days came to town every Sunday with horse driver carts There are stil a few in good condition The sandstone churches and Pastoral dwellings were very important The railway stations also but most are abandoned now Thanks for the programs
You're missing the point of our videos. We're a husband-and-wife who travel for fun and choose to share our experiences with those who may enjoy them for what they are. We'll never burden ourselves with extensive research before or during a trip and will always look for things we find interesting, since we're explorers at heart. You seemed to have missed everything we actually managed to see in the places we visited, which is what we prefer to focus on. 🚙😁 It is, and never will be, our goal to visit every single place of interest in any town or place, it's impossible anyway. We didn't make it to Memel on this trip. We visited Frankfort in Episode 474.
What a wonderful museum ! So good to see people with a passion
Absolutely! And passion is what that museum was built on. I'm glad you enjoyed it too. 🛩️💡

Hi Curtis, did you see the episode of Carte Blance about the railways?
I wondered the same thing! Thought they should be referred to DustBugs 😉
@theunskoch7406 I didn't! I don't have any time for TV, but I'll make a plan to check out that one. It certainly sounds intriguing! 😁🚉
