last night I went down the rabbit hole of what is dsd, thank you for you videos! Today I found a used sony dsd multidisk player for cheap and that the gaming headphones that have there own dac built directly into them claim to support dsd. I am so excited but can not find much of source material to listen to.

@@Wizardofgosz If you compare a native DSD recording with the same in Hires or simply CD quality, there's a difference. It might no be extremely evident. Since I love the piano, being familiar with the sound ( I'm a pianist) I can confidently say native DSD captures more of the nuances than regular than PCM. The sound coming out of the grand piano has lots of nuances. To me it's very obvious.

@@Wizardofgosz I would still argue that DSD is superior to Red Book CD, but you can easily match DSD just by using higher PCM sample rates and resolution. DSD-64 is somewhat equivalent with 96kHz 24 bits PCM but nowadays you can already stream lossless 192kHz 24 bits PCM e.g. from Amazon Music HD, so why bother?

@@Wizardofgosz I’m not fan of DSD but compared to CD quality, it has a time domain advantage in the upper treble being able to maintain phase batter. But otherwise I agree and most certainly, PCM can easily win over DSD by just running at higher sample rates. Actually I’m very aware of the disadvantages of DSD also, for example this video points that out well: th-cam.com/video/tt82UyPEeK0/w-d-xo.html

You are right that most people don't care. But also people like me who is an audiophile since beginning of the 80's, who can't afford a 60000$ sound system and, (like most people of 60 years old) can't even hear frequencies above 12k MHz, won't even hear the difference. My present system can read dsd and I listened to some tracks but can't hear the difference. I care, I want, but I feel it's out of my reach.

Thanks to David Chesky's new Audiophile Society I finally have taken possession of FLAC 192/24 and DSD64 copies of the same album. I have spent a bit of time now comparing the two versions. The result? You are going to be very disappointed in me but I can't reliably tell the difference. (I'd be very interested to hear what you and others make of these albums. I used Graffiti Jazz.) I have a reasonably revealing system though by no means in the same class as your reference system.

I have a Marantz SACD player that will stream output DSD , it will not play it directly. The software to stream DSD is difficult, JRiver is probably the best, but it’s still not very user-friendly.
The reason being is because the computer is not designed to handle DSD.
And after many hours of listening I don’t see the difference between streaming it and a direct USB connection.

@@larrywe3320 Dear Larry I can't as I'm not trained enough to do this. However I can - with 99% accuracy - identify DSD versus CD quality, even with not so high end gear. What's more, Steve and other really serious evangelists consider any form of hires as unnecessary - as he has mentioned repeatedly. At the same time, even when listening at low volumes in a desktop nearfield environment, I almost solely listen to hires rather than CD quality. It's so much more enjoyable! Why would anyone discuss differences in sound quality of entry level DACs yet fail to enjoy the benefits of HiRes formats. That's something I still haven't found out.

I have to agree since so many people are happy listening to MP3s they choose quantity over quality. I personally like physical media having been burned by some services going out of business. The Law of Diminishing Return definitely creeps into this subject with the cost of equipment to play back and the limited media itself is just not ideal.

I wonder why these people go to the effort of designing something that is different to the majority of everything else being sold when they could sell the same stuff as everyone else and probably make more money because they might have more of a "following" and it would be cheaper to develop probably.
