    To me the most important part of any language is to get rid of my native accent as much as humanly possible. My mom did not teach me Dutch while I grew up which I am bummed about, however when covid started I read dutch to her from books for an hour a day and the most important thing she stresses is the vowels and making my accent sound Dutch and not Denglish. It seems to work as I have had Dutch people who I'll speak to in passing, ask me when I emigrated to the US. Haha. When I am tired my native accent comes out more but otherwise it's pretty close to Dutch. I know for me I won't practice Dutch with people who have a strong non-Dutch accent as it will mess up my progress to sound Dutch and I will pick up bad habits.

      @@hannofranz7973my approach is also different from his, but also different from yours, when it comes to learning languages, to me the most important thing isn't the accent or the way I speak it, but how well I can understand it, I train into being able to understand when dutch people are talking, whatever they are saying, even if I don't speak too well myself, cause I believe that as long as I KNOW what you're saying then we'll find a way to understand each other, I can learn to speak all the dutch I want but the moment I am not able to get what you're saying to me, it's hopeless to keep trying to talk, thank god Dutch people never give you that problem cause they're never gonna speak dutch to a foreigner

    The silly Duolingo phrases are probably intentionally silly, to avoid 'parroting. As a native speaker, I am not familiar with learning Dutch through Duolingo, but I did take the Esperanto course. There you'll encounter phrases like "The ugly baby dances fast" and "I am happy because I have a duck". Ridiculous to ever utter to another human, but useful to understand the grammar and the words instead of just memorizing the sounds.

      I mean, you do need to memorize the sounds, and parroting (ie. trying to emulate the speaker, also known as shadowing) is probably the method of doing that without a speech therapist.

    • @TerryVogelaar
      @TerryVogelaar 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ffc1a28c7 For the sounds, absolutely. But this is about sentence structuring. If you can only say sentences you memorised, you cannot truly express yourself. You need to be able to form your own sentences. That's where the unusual phrases come in: you would never have encountered any of these in real life.

      @@TerryVogelaar fair enough. I've mostly viewed it as being useful for contextualization of the words (can't learn a word in isolation, and all that).

      I learned Dutch to an advanced level (over 8.000 base words) in about 3 months of focusing on Dutch, and am intermediate level in Norwegian / German / Swedish and beginner level in Icelandic / Danish / Faroese / Old Norse / Gothic / Norn / Limburgish / Yola / Luxembourgish / Scots Doric etc and the three Frisian languages and most other languages that are on my list of languages I want to learn and improve - Dutch is so easy to learn, and the new word order makes a lot more sense as it is what sounds right in Dutch, so I immediately got used to it, and now it is very easy to learn German because I know Dutch, and Dutch / English / Norwegian are the easiest languages in the world because they are the prettiest and most refined languages ever with the most pretty and poetic words, and one tends to remember the prettier and more distinctive words faster, so Dutch words usually take less repetitions to become part of the permanent memory and automatic memory, and all other Germanic languages are also gorgeous and easy to learn!

      Dutch words are just too pretty not to know, and 83 of the prettiest words in Dutch are - ver, vlinder, verloren, feest, adem, vaste, veel, verdween, heel, het, heen, voorbij, vandaan, verven, domein, verwaald, drijfzand, lief, leegte, liefde, heerst, einde, zonder, weet, avond, vult, gekomen, centrum, moment, pad, loop, overheerst, vallen, twijfel, vinden, kelde, wald, ter, geweest, vrees, grenzen, verleg, rein, van, stellen, wilde, steeds, verstreken, evenbeeld, bleef, steile, vrede, stem, wens, net, tijd, stille, verwenst, zalig, ochtend, zilverreiger, weer, overwint, heerlijk, zin, hart, beweert, vanaf, kwijt, wolken, mes, verliezen, dwaling, verlaten, rede, trek, tuinhek, brand, verdien, blikje, vertellen, verder, vertrek...

      German words are a bit harder to memorize if one isn’t advanced level in Dutch, however, after learning Dutch, it’s like, new German words magically got so easy to remember, so it really makes learning German way easier and faster, and if one knows German and English, one can learn Dutch even faster, so speakers of German tend to get fluent in Dutch quite fast!

    If you already learned to speak German, Dutch is easier to learn. The sentences are build the same way, contrary to English where sentences are build differently. A lot of words are similar or are quite similar.
    In the western parts of the Netherlands, Dutch sounds different. There, the z sounds like an s. The v sounds like an f. The r doesn’t roll. The w has almost no sound. The g is very harsh like scraping your throat. In the rest of the Netherlands they pronounce these letters as they should be.

    Ik ben duitser en merk dat het een grote vordeel is de taal te praten. Tussen duits en engels kan je vaak de juiste referentie vinden maar vele andere woorden zijn total anders of zijn "foute vrienden": woorden met een andere betekenis ( by voorbeeld aardig is nett maar niet artig ). Helaas, heb ik hier in Spanje in mijn stad niet zo vele mogelijkheden de taal te praten, hoewel, ik hoop de taal snel te leren.
