I've been saying this exact point this whole time. The iPad 2018 is more than enough for most if not all users. People get so defensive of the new pro model. I skipped pro iPads and went with the iPad 2018 and it's great for consumption and super light productivity. The pro is pretty much the an iPad 2018 with great hardware. When it comes to use there is not much of difference between the two except for a few things. These tablets are not laptop replacements but they are good supplemental items.

The iPad Pro has pro motion display it is immensely better for any creating such as procreate or editing video. Drawing is a fluid seamless experience on the pro, because it has the hardware to support fast loads and lots of moving parts. Also, camera is much better, screen is retina and brighter plus has the pro motion and 120 gigahertz display meaning when your doing almost anything even something simple like flicking through apps there is not even a hint of a stutter. Plus it has 4 speakers that are definitely upgraded from a regular iPad it has the best sound and HD picture of any tablet and most laptops on market, plus it outperforms 90% of laptops. It just feels next level and has to be experienced to fully understand. Trust me there is a huge difference go for a 10.5 Pro not a 2018 regular iPad it’s much more worth the little extra money, if you’re just gonna be playing doodle jump then go for the reg iPad though. 😂

Sam Jackson no. If you are an artist you should be aware that money should be spent wisely. The cost of the pro itself is absurd for what ur getting. Its a luxury. Not a necessity. Great artists who use the cintique could care less about the 120ghz display so no, it is not worth it. If ur going for “gaming” then ask yourself are mobile games really that good compared to a cheap gaming laptop for the price less than an ipad pro?

Thank you for making this video. I've been struggling in my head with purchasing the regular iPad. I'm used to being able to invest in the best version but this time around it's just not feasible with my current budget. Granted I'm a freelance designer and work primarily on my PC and I was planning on using the iPad as a leisurely illustration device for my own art pieces.

I bought the 2018 iPad based to a large degree on your review of it, and I have not regretted it whatsoever! I use it only for art, and it has been great. It's just a joy to use, and so much fun!! I also got a matte screen protector based on your review of those (I won't tell PaperLike, lol). I really, really love my iPad!!! I would love to have the 12.9" Pro for the extra screen space, and am contemplating getting one in the spring when I get my annual bonus, but honestly, I would probably be as well served with a used 2017 model, I think. I don't think most of the upgrades from the 2017 to 2018 would make that much difference for me. To get what I want in the new iPad Pro 12.9" (along with having to buy a new Pencil, grrr, and I actually prefer the way the old one charges, I can use a cable instead of having to rely on the iPad) would be like $1500, which would go a long way towards upgrading my desktop, omg!!!

Carol Teater who makes the matte screen protector you got? Is it glass or film. I have last year’s 10.5 iPad pro and there aren’t too many matte screen protectors for that model. I don’t know about Paperlike, I read mixed reviews

      smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00G4SA1FG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
If the link doesn't work, it is this one:
iCarez Anti-Glare/Anti-Fingerprint Screen Protector for New iPad 9.7 Inch (2018/2017)/iPad Pro 9.7 Inch/iPad Air 2/iPad Air (2 Pack) Matte
Really, probably any matte protector is about the same. I like the feel of the one I got much better than the bare surface. I also ordered a regular (not matte) set, have not tried that yet. One downside of the matte protectors is that a lot of them (I would say all, but hedging, lol) really blur the detail of the screen, and break up the light into red, green, and blue speckles. I really don't use my iPad for reading or watching videos, so it isn't a big problem, but it can be disconcerting, especially at first. The good news is that the regular screen protectors are very cheap (mine was like $8 for two), so you can try it and if you don't like it, you are not out much. :)

Not having the money for the iPad Pro, I opted for the 2018 iPad, instead....in 2019. Frankly, I think a lot of the hoopla over the iPad Pro is tremendously exaggerated, as is the flap about the air space in the 2018 iPad's non-laminated screen making a lot of noise. As a photographer, and having used an iPad 2 to edit RAW files from my Sony in Snapseed, I knew there would be no problem in doing so on my iPad 6, as well. The additional screen size of the Pro is not only unnecessary, but, again, quite exaggerated. I have a 17" laptop from Asus that I used for photoediting for six years and, frankly, I prefer using my iPad, as the image is sharper, clearer and has greater contrast. Bigger isn't always better.

  • @unstabledefusion

I have the 2018 iPad right now. The only reason I would rather have the iPad Pro is because of the bigger screen for note taking and drawing. When handwriting notes on the 9.7 inch iPad there isn’t nearly as much space so after writing a few words you have to select it and make it much smaller. This is in my experience anyway using Notability.
Also the keyboard is much bigger on the bigger iPad Pro so it would be easier for me to type rather on the smaller 9.7 iPad. Typing on the smaller iPad is a whole new experience so it took me a long time to learn how to type fast and efficiently.

Great points. I think for most the cost difference will be the major determining factor. With that said, I also think it validates the idea that with the larger more expensive IPad Pro ... having the additional real estate can be beneficial in many circumstances if money somehow is not an issue. So what’s refreshing about both models is they are truly viable options for everyone. Especially for those like me who are exploring their options for finally sharing the art they make with the world. I guess we all have to learn to crawl before we can walk, and it’s good to know that starting with the regular iPad is not considered a handicap in any way, shape, or form. Thanks for the review Brad.

Hey Brad, great video. But you forgot to mention at the very beginning concerning canvas size, that the DPI plays a crucial role as well in the possible amount of layers. I'm still using a first gen iPad Pro 12.9". Procreate is still the only app that has excellent performance. The rest were always hit and miss just like desktop programs. You have to juggle document size with brush size, resolution, number of layers, etc. Get the formula wrong and you get lag. Or even freezes.

Paper textured screen protectors are terrible for both the Pencil nib and the ipad. After less than a month I had to replace my nib because the rough texture of the screen protector had worn it down so badly. It also makes the screen much less clear and some gestures register less easily, eg pinch to merge layers in Procreate. It wasn't as hard as I thought to learn to draw on the glass surface

I can see in a lot of practical usage for art, both are comparable. Im also assuming you're not super into the whole specs and what really makes the new iPad so much better, but that new processor in the new one is an unbelievable powerhouse. It's more powerful than alot of high end desktop processors and at a fraction of the size. Alot of these apps were already optimized for the old iPad so of course they will run well, but the new Photoshop is being specifically made to take full advantage of the A12x bionic chips speeds. As more apps work with the new architecture, the difference will only become larger with time

I own a 2018 iPad, then bought an iPad Pro 10.5 about 7 months later when on sale. Why? I mostly use my iPad to listen to music and watch videos. The quad speakers on the Pros are so drastically superior to the twin speakers on the regular iPad that I felt compelled to upgrade after testing the Pro in the store. An expensive compulsion! So if you buy the regular iPad, never go back and look at the Pro, you will want it, in my experience.

John Howell I see your point. The IPad for me has always been an immensely powerful useful companion tool to my MacBook Pro. Funny thing is, is the new IPad Pro I just purchased now outperforms (by almost double) my 1 step above baseline MacBook. It kills it on Geekbench scores with CPU speed and GPU power. Plus its way more portable, touchscreen, and just flying through tasks with the apps available makes ‘work’ so much fun. Now if I want to use photoshop or edit 4K or even type a paper I turn to my Mac. But it wont be that way forever, I have both, and from the rumors the reason Ipads are getting such a boost in power and the newest A10-12x chips is that they’re gearing up for a switch from IOS to a half Mac/IOS hybrid operating system. Effectively turning an IPad Pro into a Computer Replacement. They’ve always been marketed as such, now they actually will fully be just that... Once they make that switch there truly will be no need for a clunky MacBook anymore. iPads are most definitely the focus for Apple when it comes to the future of computing. Ill be glad to Have a Sup’d up Pro when the time comes. Cheers!

All these TH-cam speed test seem premature; IOS 12 and this new hardware has been released to close together for anyone to properly optimize their application. There are so many api changes and updates, I am sure not even apple has gotten around to updating everything for the new IPad, given how much they focus on IPhones first. If this iPad was not much more capable, why is it only now that Adobe is putting full development resources into a proper Photoshop, why not before with last generation? Everyone needs to have patience and give the developers of the world sometime to update their million+ codebases before doing “vs.” test and calling everything the same. (Comment logged on an iPad Pro 2018, I didn’t see any speed difference in my typing from last year model)

I have many versions of IPAD and the main reason to by the 2018 Pro is Screen Size. I was using the last new 12.9 IPAD PRO but it could not keep a charge while I was using it just watching TH-cam Videos on 50% Screen Brightness I would have to lower the brightness so low if I was going to be using the device for more then a few hours and I wasn’t gaming, or running power apps. TH-cam Email, no clients in the back grown running and I have good size Hard Drive with over 85% left on Both devices. I did research on this and this is a issue of the IPad Losing charge while plugged in.. So far the 2018 12.9 IPAD PRO hasn’t been a issue at all.

I am not sure if the new 12.9" iPad Pro is any noticeably better at handling digital art than last year's 12.9" iPad Pro.
