Nauru has been reported as possibly the most obese nation in the world, with a dire type 2 diabetes problem - so I found it illuminating to see what "food" products were highlighted in the news clip: confectionery; soft drink (especially Coca-Cola); biscuits; fruit pieces in sugary syrup; and ice cream. If those are the dietary priorities of the clientele, then it's no wonder that Nauru is in such poor shape healthwise. Can one buy any healthy unprocessed food (meat, fish, vegetables, fruit) at the supermarket? I ask because I don't see any shown in the news clip. The Californian rice only counts as sort-of healthy because white rice has had most of its nutrients refined out of it, and is almost just starch.
I don't see any fresh fruits and vegetables in that video clip. Only factory-processed goods and soda. I think they have access to fruits and vegetables via shipping and they sell it to their small markets...or they just, grow their own food for themselves.
Finn Le Human Seeing the brands of confectionery, biscuits and ice cream shown in the clip, I could be looking at the shelves of a supermarket here in Australia - not surprising, I suppose, seeing that we're still apparently the biggest country of influence in Nauru after they got their independence from our previous administration over the island. But your comments about people possibly growing their own fresh food or getting it from small markets make sense. For those of us living in suburban Western societies, growing your own food has largely fallen out of fashion, and the meat/fish and fruit/veg sections of the local supermarket are effectively our "market". For the Nauruans, having meat/fish and fruit/veg sections in the supermarket would probably be superfluous to traditional trading practices. With a reported unemployment rate of 90 percent and a taste for Western junk "food", the poor Nauruans aren't travelling well, unfortunately.
Unfortunately, due to the phosphate mining in the country back in the ''70s and '80s, it has left seventy-five percent of the nation uninhabitable and it has made it difficult to grow food in that country. To make matters worse, about ninety percent of the population is unemployed, making it nearly impossible for the majority of the citizens to buy fresh foods.
