- I've had this Jackson Dinky Dk2s for years but I've never used it live. I always felt the weakest point was the licence Floyd Rose. In this video I change that.

The red thumbscrews go exceptionally well with the finish on the guitar
Ya mean the fine tuners
@@thecreamster1248 The entire operation of said fine tuning is with these thumbscrews. Same thing.

can we get a hair care routine next tho
try pureology shampoo/conditioner.
@@arniefunkel9341 ok, i just want to know... do you still use this and do you still think its good? my hair is going to shit and i need to know
@@bthonk dude. you’ll probably think i’m nuts but: only wash your hair like 2-3 times a week. Use a decent shampoo and separate conditioner (like pantene or better). I usually do a couple passes of conditioner. What’s most important is the in between days is brushing it like marsha freakin brady. seriously. when i get lazy and don’t brush it my wife tells me i look like a homeless dude. but when i brush regularly it falls straight and neat like the cover of a 70s rock album. sadly she won’t let me do lamb chops so i just have a goatee, but it works. And then don’t think about it after. it’s hair and we’re guys, not women who make us late to everything doing hair and makeup. Oh ya, and singers. They take as long as most women, but they’re singers, ya know? end of rant.
Hey man, although you're right about Floyd's not being originally designed to bend up, on a good Floyd, you should be able to bend up or down without tuning instability.
He meant that if he broke a string, the string tension wouldnt decrease causing the bridge to tilt back turning it out of tune
christ dude, you're great at channel reviews, gear reviews AND you're incredibly good at demoing stuff. major props KDH, always look forward to your uploads.
That's a bummer you had to spend so much money on that FR unit !
I've got a Jackson Dinky FR and mine is the same crap one you tossed away and mine works great and i only broke one string right when I got it but now that it's broke in its great and solid to the core !🤔
It's true . I have a DK2M with the MIJ Jackson licensed trem & an older 93' Soloist Pro with MIG Schaller FR and they're both fine. Ireally don't use trem like I used to as it's not "The 80's" anymore . It's nice to know you have it , but ....... To each . Speaking of the 80's ,1 thing I love about some real FR's is the D-Tuna feature . That too would be handy . Bottom line , everyone needs a hardtail around for crazy alternate tunings .
Great vid..... Ive been rockin time to party! Legit late 80s metal... I am old enough to be the judge of that
Wow, the difference in sound quality is shocking - such an improvement.
Damn that really livens up the sound! I did not expect that.
Thanks for the Americanized "Aluminum" pronunciation. It was a delightful surprise.
The correct way
that bridge is absolutely gorgeous!!!
The difference to tone and sustain us huge! Definitely doing this upgrade on my 2002 MIJ DK2! Great video. Thanks!
Good video dude that red is really nice n you can hear the difference however there is ways to keep it in tune! Specially an original floyd' I feel your defeating the whole purpose of this system! GGs bro🤘🤘🤘
I own a Jackson Kelly KE3 and it came with the same Floyd, but I have to say I never had tuning issues with it, it wasn't as solid as the German Floyd on my Shecter but it was great, I just replaced the block with a brass one and now it feels very solid along as noiseless spring.
This probably your best palying demo yet keep it up!
That riff is from Thin Lizzys last studio record , its the beginning of the song , Cold Sweat.....
Good vid but the gap between the nut and the fingerboard needs to be fixed.
Man the upgrade looks fantastic n the tone definitely sounds way more rockin!! Hell yes!!! Grat job👍🏽.
I just wanted to let you know you just showed me everything I wanted to know Great Coverage Champ Awsom
I have a MIJ Jackson from the early 2000s and I want to replace the tremolo. I can't afford it at the moment, but this review is just what I needed. Thanks, man!
One thing I did notice was that there was a small gap between the end of the fretboard and the front-edge of the locking nut, there should be no gap in between the end of the fretboard and the front-edge of the locking nut because the locking nut's front-edge defines the zero-point of the guitar's scale-length, if this zero-point is not exactly right on the end of the fretboard near the first fret, this will put the guitar's 12th-fret intonation out of whack, and you'll find that the tuning will go progressively out as you go towards the nut, so, when you install the locking-nut the front edge of it needs to be hard up against the end of the fretboard with no gap visible.
Yeah my Floyd has a haryd time staying in chune
You should try a different chuning
Mowe spwings
The last time I was on tour, I was given a guitar to use that had a Floyd Rose. It broke a string after the second gig. Whereas with my Carvin V220, I could replace the string in a matter of minutes, not so with ol' Floyd. I put the loaner guitar back in its case, where it remained for the next 2-1/2 months, whipped out the Carvin, and all was well.
I have no patience for a tremolo system that requires (a) cutting off the ball ends to restring it, and (b) hoping I didn't leave my Allen wrench at home. I understand that the Speedloader provided some relief, but only if you bought the special bullet-end strings. Now it is difficult, if not impossible, to buy replacement strings. So back to whipping out the Dykes and Allen wrenches ... uh, I'm thinking "no".
The V220 was my workhorse for 29 years. My new guitar is a Kiesel (f/k/a Carvin) DC600 with the Hipshot whammy bar - it will arrive on or about December 16, 2020. Based on the performance of my V220, I look forward to putting it through its paces.
My DC600 arrived as promised on 12/16/20 - and I can sum up the performance of the Hipshot tremolo in two words: "Oh, MAN!" Kiesel does it again!
man why you gotta write a whole book about this smh
@@kingquhzk5143 People always leave long comments. 🤷♂️
What a awesome video! I’ve been planning on upgrading mine but now it’s a must!! What a difference! It also made that already killer cherry look even better!! Awesome playing 🤘 and thx for sharing!!!
It’s good to see you back on TH-cam! I’m having some problems with a licensed Floyd in a guitar I’ve had for 16 years or so, I think it’s time to take a leaf out of your book and upgrade :)
Most every licensed one is terrible.
@ᅚᅚᅚᅚ Originals and Schallers and one called a Lockmeister which I think is also made by Schaller are what you want.
Such cleaner and a tighter sound from the original floyd rose. Nice!
Very nice! The improvements are immediately noticable.
I have a Dk2 with a licenced Floyd and you are spot-on. The licenced one is forever giving me problems. I bought the guitar second hand and cheap from a guy who...... Got fed-up with the Floyd issues on this guitar. So, I got it cheap but the downside is I'm forever futzing with it to keep it in tune. I see this upgrade in the near future for this guitar because otherwise I love the guitar.
I removed my trem-stop and D-tuna off my Kramer Dave Sabo signature model, I also installed Fu-tone Titanium saddle blocks and saddle screws with the brass big block, what a difference. I can swing the trem down or up and stays in tune absolutely. I did the exact same set up on my original Kramer Nightswan Aztec from 1989 and same thing. I think more then anything it improves reliability so much. I'm also doing my 96 Hamer Californian. It's tried and true so why not lol.
I am surprised at how much better the guitar sounds. That was definitely worth the upgrade!
The black one was just out of tune lol
You have no idea how much this video has helped me sir.. I am so thankful. I've been watching/subscribed from around your start (Perhaps 2.5k subs) and you deserve everything you've gained since then and what is to come in your future. Best wishes my friend, you're gonna knock this shit out of the park.
I have two of these 40th anniversary bridges. Haven't gotten around to install them!! One is gold ,the other silver!!
Thanks, I was just looking for an alternative for my Epiphone Richie Faulkner V. The floyd on it sucks, but the rest is amazing. The 40 th anniversary seem not to exist anymore, I hope it will be back. thanks for the info 👍
I had that same stock Floyd on my 95 Soloist. One day I was watching SpongeBob changing strings and the entire saddle broke. The metal literally cracked apart
I’m old enough to remember the Floyd Rose craze. The thing is I happened to have a Standard Fender Strat with a tremolo that stayed in tune just fine. I would string it up so there wasn’t a steep angle from the nut to the tuners, and lube the nut with chainsaw oil. I couldn’t get the flapping strings effect, but it worked just fine. Almost perfect. I always got comments about how could it be possible to stay in tune. So, I never had a Floyd. I used to call them kitchen sinks. Believe me when I tell you, Floyd Rose was everywhere in the early 80s.
Much better clarity and cleaner sounding. Night and day difference. Awesome!
The guitar needs to be tuned in the music clips of it being played with the original trem.
I have a Jackson licensed Floyd and it’s basically just a Floyd Special but black
Thé OFR well setted up has a great tuning stability on floating mode
I have the Flyod Rose Special on a few of my guitars excellent System no problems with it...its a real Flyod Rose never a problem
They start out ok, but eventually what happens is the pivot posts will wear because they use cheaper metals. Happened to 2 of my Floyd rose specials. The tuning posts and the base plate posts will both wear out eventually. Especially if you try to lower the string action on the posts with full string tension
Sounds and looks great!
I installed a brass big block on my Jackson RS 32 V and the tone is much better, and I had already installed an EMG 81 in the bridge position. The licensed Floyd on it sucks for tuning stability though. I never play that guitar because of that, so I need to upgrade to a better Floyd and start playing that guitar again. PS. Thanks for not demoing any clean tones and not making me have to fast forward to the real tone we’re all here for. Your tone and playing is killer!
You lost grounding when you installed those coated springs, the uninsulated ones before connected the string claw to the bridge but now you don't have continuity.
That's a really good point that I didn't even consider for my current build. Do you have any advice as to how to continue the ground? I'm assuming trim the coating around the spring ends or ground into the brass block.
man, this guy can shred! Way better than Rob Chapman who sucks at singing and who is such an amateur when comes to play guitar, but he thinks he is a pro playing the same riff and same scale all the time, I'm glad that Andertons removed him forever.
Definitely sounds better. I'm jealous!
Very nice guitar. The floyd original is just great. J have a lace crackle 90 or 91 Charvel and it has a made in Germany schaller trem which works great. I think I will buy some of those titanium locking blocks.
Good video man. Thanks so much. That sustainer is too much fun.
Thin Lizzy rules 🤪♥️🤟
The Bill Wurtz sample, chef's kiss
Great video and shred chops
Even a cheap Jackson is a really fun guitar that is easy to play and sounds great. The higher end ones must be awesome.
The 'garbage' sound clips had me cracking up! 😅
Sometimes get what you pay for. In this case, obviously. A lot of people are going to be in a position to have to justify an upgrade that costs as much as the guitar though. I think its worth it. As are sustainiac pick ups because they make trems so much fun. I value and really benefit from your videos. Thanks. Keep up the good work.
I was always surprised Jackson put that on these pro specced Japanese Dinkys. I notice the new DK's have FR1000s which are fine.
Beautiful look on the guitar!
Very hot rod like.
You can also get knobs and tuners in satin chrome, i did that an older Schecter Damien model when I swapped the black to satin chrome to look like the newer models.
I do however have an install recommendation for you, the springs should be straight to the block and not angled.
With an angel, there is a chance the spring pops out due to the changing tension angles when you pull on them.
I was a guy who said he would never buy a Floyd rose but after realizing how easy it is to stop the strings from detuning each other with a trem stop I was sold on a Floyd rose guitar.
I found out spring noise, for me, was spring direction. I had the same stupid noise coming from a real German Schaller Floyd. I got rid of it by complete accident, just from changing the direction of the springs. At first the v of springs pointed to the but of the guitar, so i changed it so the v pointed towards the neck and it was gone and felt like butter. Buttery smooth, no clicking. I will say I never cared for trem stoppers. I like to pull up, and developed a picking to work around the detuning of the trem itself.
It's a thing of beauty.
Great video. I too am looking to replace the Floyd Rose licensed tremolo on my guitar. I was wondering, is it just a straight swap in terms of size, no drilling required etc?
I recently upgraded to the push in bar and love it over the screw down collar. And it’s only 15.00 US from Floyd...
I’d love to put a German Floyd into my Wolfgang standard...
woah. I was not expecting that much of a tone change!
Get rid of the stopper, Floyd makes a "Return to Zero" type stopper that allows you to still float.. try that out.. it sucks to have "Dive only" option with such an ULTRA bridge. The "Brass Claw" is gimmicky.. find a vid that shows a difference in brass claws vs steel. It does look cooler l guess if you are concerned about looks.. if that's the case.. FU Tone makes Ti anodized colored parts for that bridge, nut screws, string lock blocks, saddle set screws, string lock screws all in blue, red, gold, silver green or purple, you would clearly go red on that guitar..it would look incredibly quality but other than better string lock blocks it's all esthetics. Your guitar does sound much tighter and better over all since bridge upgrade, brass block is the culprit! Looks very cool and a really great guitar! Congrats!
Guitars go out of tune if something changes; properly functioning & setup hardware doesn't change... so I've always been kind of baffled by these stories about certain models of non-OGFL that never stay in tune. Granted I've got my least favorites too... but none of them are the licensed Jackson versions, and the ones that I don't like are usually just uncomfortably positioned in my strumming zone.
That trem looks fly son! the red finishing is top notch, wierd about the mismatched screws but very cool after they send out the right parts. I've wanted to do a simaler upgrade on my RG330 for a long time but i don't think the trem route is the same for my version of the edgeIII. after torqing the hell out of the movable parts it seems much more in tune, in my case the screws under the nut were a bit loose easy to miss those, i like your upgrade alot.
My most stable guitar is it Ibanez with a edge 3 bridge. Even though it was considerably a cheapo guitar it stays in tune. Sometimes the simplest things give you tuning stability. Over the years I've learned that adding lip balm to the blades and give it a few turns adds tons stability.
Have same model and also annoyed by the trem. wanted to swap it with edge pro low profile just don't know if it will fit .. great review thanks
"jack butler is gonna like you"
Is this made from titanium? noticed they do have a titanium model but unfortunately it’s been discontinued until further notice, which, makes sense, being $1,444 USD, and being in Australia if I ordered it it would make it nearly $2k before shipping it’s not exactly affordable,
I just assume that the chrome finish is what gives it that premium titanium look, looks sick on the jackson, great vid
That FR looks suspicious like my Kahler "Steeler" trem from the early 90's.
Putting allen keys on the back of the headstock is a great idea.
Question, How old were the strings before you swapped bridges? i feel like thats a major factor in the tone change you seemed to get after the swap. Regardless, ill bet that new one is light years better feeling than that old jackson bridge.
since your springs are coated they aren't transmitting the ground. move the ground to the trem block
brass blocks kinda thin tone a little with higher gain and sound a bit tinny with gain sometimes, not always i have both it might depend onthe guitar its installed in
Very cool.
Your old trem could do flutter, that's a nice feature, i've had worse ones that couldn't. But yeah, great improvement in sound and looks, the tone seems more clear, not to mention the greater sustain
You said it took forever to get the bridge pins in, did you have to drill out the holes for them to fit? Are the new OFR pins a direct swap?
Nice playing!!
DUDE, I BROKE 2 SCREWS ON THAT FLOYD, WHILE UNSCREWING!!!!!!!!!
Now my old jackson is my slide guitar with p90 in it.
Great..thank you😎
maybe try a piece of felt for the tremstopper but i dont know how it would affect sustain if it may dampen it a little but that is the only down fall to the trem stoppers thats why i just let them float, if u get the guitar set up right they will stay in tune just fine floating actually as good if not better cause it has the exact amount of spring tension for the strings so if everything is right it has to go back to that perfect point. i like your up pitch fluttering to that since u put the trem stop on now u cant do!
Hi, nice work! I have the EXACT same guitar as yours and wanted to upgrade the bridge to a Floyd rose too. Just to check, is the cavity long enough to fit the string lock screws when you pull up the trem? Since the Floyd rose is longer than the original bridge as you mentioned.
Yes the standard Floyd rose fits perfectly without any extra routing or mods to the body
Thanks! Will start to work on it.
Did anyone else notice the quite noticeable gap between the new nut and the fret board. I wonder if this effected the tuning/intonation at all...
You should have used the R3 nut. The R4 is standard 1 11/16, but the R3 is 1 11/16 "for binding" which is a 1 11/16 width... but with a 1 5/8 string spacing (to compensate for the neck binding).
@@2112GTR I just got a black LockMeister... $197 on Amazon. R2 nut. Good to know about the height issue as I'm replacing the Kahler licensed nut currently on one of my ESP M-ll Deluxes. I'll be getting a LockMeister from now on... no more Korean 1000 junk for me.
@@2112GTR I should have clarified... I have a Floyd Rose licensed Kahler (weird huh)... the nut is different than a regular Floyd nut, the mounting holes are completely different, so I have to have it professionally done. Love this German made LockMeister tho...
04:53 - did redrill the post holes by yourself? The original Floyd rose are bigger
Nice one buddy! 😎🤘🙏
Nice looking. Can't reason getting since my J32 stays in tune though.
You didn't angle the spring stop brass claw. It helps to angle big time as big strings put more tension than thinner ones.
The new one does sound fuller/ thicker.
your playing is kick ass. keep going kiddo.
Considering they're made in the same factory around the same time period using the same bridge I should be able to install all of the same parts on my Kelly KE3 without any issues right?
Honestly I couldn't hear much difference, but I suppose if it stays in tune fine.
(I can't even keep a fixed bridge in tune anyway)
Floyds are well known for staying in tune better than anything other than an evertune, once set up correctly and so long as the strings don't break. However... Setup and strings break so ymmv.
the only thing with trem stoppers is how do you compensate for the flatness on the G after a bit of trem action? Every floyd style trem needs a little tug sharp to get back to its correct pitch, the elastic band syndrome.
Amazing player
Does the bottom edge seem a lot closer to the body on your yours. I just noticed my dk2 has a bigger gap on the top plays good though.
Good video! 🤘 But I gotta ask, how big is 1/turd? 😂
Hello dr
I have a schecter hellraiser c7
Question is it has 4 screws
If I decide the put in three will it work?
Does this affect the action?
OMG you're back
My stainless saddle screws are like yours but 3 and 3.
Floyds dont go outa tune because the bridge is collapsing per se, the plate hiding into the body is just the observable symptome. The issues Floyds face are the following (mix and match to your liking, its all of them at the same time to different degrees) :
1) The nut. Same issue as with standart nuts except it happens less but if it does, worse. Over time the strings eat themselfs into the thingies which hold them in place, reducing the downward force. This gives the strings space to wiggle a bit and catch themselfs in a different position after a dive/bend. Same shit with the screws themselfs, I found myself having to replace those every 5-6 years or so. I own 4 gits with Floyds, each one came with rubbish screws on every part of the instrument. This brings us right to the worst offender -
2) Everything about the saddle. Dont screw the intonation screws in like the god of thunder, those screws are shit and will not survive the third time you want to adjust them. Also, screw those things into the plate like youre securing a high frequented automobile bridge, because the actual saddles WILL start moving after some hours of heavy whammy usage. Contradicting statement ? Yes.
2.1) After a while, I estimate after about the 10th string swap, theres movement in the insert-cavity. Mostly applies to the two highest strings, for the same reasons as with the nut stuff. Either the saddle, the insert or both get worn down by the string and pressure and will give. The one on my 7sAgile is the worst offender, the saddle itself has gotten sharp edges inside the cavity which snap the E string. Its also the Floyd on which I had to replace 3 of those screws which hold the inserts in place, the saddle has eaten the threads on 'em.
Everything terrible about Floyds comes down to maximum shitty hardware quality. Shit screws, shit inserts, I even had a shit claw. The machining was always tolerable, always. Im about to do the same move as you and buy new Floyds in the hopes the come with better metals and machining. I will not buy a Floyd git ever again tho. They work fine for a few years and then start getting cranky and needy. I own a Kahler from 1988 and one from 2000, both work 100% satisfactory still. I have never had one of those Ibanez whammys having issues in my vicinity, either. Just checked, original Floyds range from 350 to 470€ in my country. You get an Ibanez for half that and an USA Kahler for the same amount. Fuck. That. Shit. Guitarshops need switch, either give me the option for a high quality Floyd or a completely different one but getting a licensed Floyd just means having to spent time, nerves and more money down the line. All of my hate.
Mp
Get string through screws, throw out the blocks & get a tone vise OR Bill Edwards keyless locking nut.
Nice nod to Lizzy
Mr KDH: First off thank you for all of your postings: I consider you and your channel "Virtual public servants" to the guitar community. I have the exact Jackson DK-2s that you have (even same color) but mine is older came with "Floyd licensed trem and "Duncan designed Pickups (the serial lookup says 1996 made in japan w/serial# 9691215. Trying to take your advice and looked for (but could not find) the 40th anniversary Floyd trem you suggested.Sold out? Anyway: Being that we have the same guitar, I would like to know some of the correct sizes of parts (like the nut size or any other specifics that would make it easier to buy the rest of the parts you bought (claw, springs, steel screws) Question: If you could not find a "40th anniversary Floyd Which Floyd trem system Would you get? their original 1984, or "original Hot rod"? ...Yes I too would want "nickel or chrome" as well. Any suggestions?.....Thanks in advance...Tim
Cold Sweat ......
Beautiful guitar !
one is lo profile and one isnt, two totally different style floyds, difference in tone came from the bigger harder heavier block, all you needed was the block for slight tone difference, oh the springs helped with unwanted noise and feel, ihave a dk2s same year and someone installed a floyd rose pro lo profile,i consider that a downgrade, floyd rose pro has been a pain lately
