  • In this video, you are going to get to ride along with me as I do my first cross country solo in a very long time. The flight was just under 200 miles and I was using what is called "Flight Following" the entire time.

    During training I would advise to stay off AP as much as possible unless you have to reach for something in the back or something like that where your hands won't be on the controls. Manually flying the plane is great for muscle memory, actively scanning the instruments and just actually flying the plane. When you get into IFR (my instructor forbid me to turn on AP). It can get very busy and that's ok, you will get busy times in the cockpit so it's good to get used to it!

      As many instructors and coaches and bosses and mentors have said, “It’s easier to get easier.” If you can hand fly IFR in IMC, you can do just about anything else…… and you’ll be able to do so again if needs be.

    Something l learned from my own GoPro flight videos is get a lens ND filter. Especially for the camera you’ll have faces the front windshield/gauges. REALLY cleans up glare and overexposure issues from the gopro and takes out almost any need for editing. I use Polarpro. They’re great.

    Don't let the DPE see this. You should be hand flying, (no autopilot) and using dead reckoning on a paper chart, and timing each point. I know that's old school and you will probably never use it... but it's the way they will make you do it for the practical part of the check ride. But... great vid. thanks for posting.

    • @PghGameFix
      @PghGameFix ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UTarcher72 I agree to a degree. While most DPE's will want you to use modern stuff... but they will want you to still use "Basic" techniques to make sure you can fly properly. The hand flying will show that you can stay on course and altitude while doing other tasks. The "Dead Reckoning" to make sure you can follow a chart and to get back onto course... and the timing to make sure you have properly accounted for fuel. Not all planes glass or have an autopilot to take care of that for us. Since Trent had his PPL in Canada, and they want him to redo some of it here... I would just make sure to cover anything the DPE may want... and... it's good practice anyway.

    1. What aircraft are you flying?
