    You see this is what I hate. I try to prepare by watching these videos, and it is easy when I watch the video. Although, once it's time for a test I get tested on the same concept, but with much more complex questions. Sucks -.-. Am I the only one?

      You aren't the only one mate but you cannot blame anyone on not being able to do the math problems in exams these videos show you the concept of how to do the problems so if you get the concept then you can do any sum.

      Ikr, I asked my teacher why it seems like the way the teach seems more complex but he mentioned how in math we're suppose to become problem solvers ourselves and figure out problems on our own

    All he did was skip the step where he took 16 out of the sqr root, probably because he thought most people would realize that.

    Khan Academy has essentially replaced my Math class. I can talk/do other homework in Algebra II and get A's on all the tests. Man, Mr. Khan needs some type of higher recognition. I don't think people realize how much this guy is contributing. THANK YOU KHAN ACADEMY

    Khan... I'm tutoring someone in radicals right now and the easiest way for me to explain perfect squares was to show her that if you completely factor a number, any factor that repeats will create a perfect square, and the product of all of the repeated factors is the largest perfect square in the number. A simple trick, but effective.

    For solving √(50), not knowing that 25 was a perfect square, if you broke it down to √(5) * √(10), you could break the √(10) down further to √(5) * √(2) to get the same answer. Basically, it turns into:
    √(50)
    √(5) * √(10)
    √(5) * √(5) * √(2)
    5√(2) is still the answer.
    What I'm trying to say, if you don't know the perfect squares, there's no need to panic. You can still simplify by breaking down further.

    I'm not sure if this pattern stands throughout all of the perfect squares, but I've noticed that starting from 0 if you add the next odd integer, you get a perfect square. E.G 0+1 = 1. 1 is a perfect square. (1+3 = 4).( 4+5 = 9) (9+7 = 16) (16+9 =25) (25 + 11 = 36) and so on. Hopefully this made sense, to whoever reads this, but It's very helpful to me, and unfortunately it's something my algebra teacher never taught.

    Here's my only issue with this way of teaching simplifying radicals.. This works for students who already have a good number sense and can just "see" perfect squares.
    I teach my students to use a number tree and prime factorize. Once they do that, I tell them to take the pairs out of the square root and multiply whatever can come out. Sure, my higher students see the perfect square idea, but that way works better for all students across the board.
    sqrt(20)=sqrt(2*2*5). Since there are a pair of 2s, they come out of my sqrt bus and become 2sqrt(5). It doesn't fail. Also works well when you get to cube roots because it becomes groups of 3 come out from under the radical.
    sqrt(72)=sqrt(2*2*2*3*3)=sqrt([2*2]*2*[3*3])=2*3sqrt(2)=6*sqrt(2)

    2 isn't a perfect square. 9 is a perfect square. Therefore, he skipped over two and went to 9 in order to get 3. If you watch his earlier videos he's really good at explaining the basics of radicals and exponents. Try checking those out..
