One caution about using stone in an oven - especially river stones. Some stone is porous or have tiny cracks and can hold water. When exposed to heat this water can turn to steam, build pressure and explode. This has happened to me on several occasions when using just an open fire. Generally the risk of injury is quite low, but it is something to note when working with stone, water and fire. But when rock fractures like that it can be startling - especially in the early hours of a dark morning. One option to consider when making an oven might be the use of cob. Cob is a mixture of straw, sand and clay. No stone is required to make the oven form. I assume that where straw is not available, as in a bug out situation other fibers could be used instead. Yet another option, which is simpler still is to make a pit oven. This requires only to dig a hole in which a fire is built. Once the fire has burned down to coals the food to be cooked is placed in the coals, or in some cases on top. Very primitive methods involve wrapping the food in an outer shell - however more advanced techniques use a cast iron skillet or Dutch Oven. I recognize that cast iron cooking vessels are not something one would typically carry in a bug out bag. However, making an oven suggests a more permanent location and perhaps more advanced planning.
Hi Lilly, what I did was build the oven taller and added a shelf inside using a wide flat river rock. I build the fire underneath and cook meat and bread on the rock. There is space behind the rock for smoke to escape through the hole in the top, once the rock heats up it radiates a lot of heat for more cooking or to warm the nearby shelter!

I would like to see you incorporate the mud stove Into your super shelter as a rocket stove with a heating chamber, especially if this is a bug out shelter. Very low wood use, high heat output.
I too was curious as to why it isn't in the shelter. Seems like a good fit, could use it to get the shelter really warm plus extend the cooking abilities. In addition the design would allow the fire to stay going easily even in a heavy rain.
+XGC Scrappy large stones and clay would negate both those concerns. I agree, it needs to be incorporated but her current reflector and plastic sheeting is more than sufficient to maintain a high temp in her bedding area. However, a rocket stove would be insanely more efficient.

Not bad for a first try. next time bundled a bunch of sticks cover that with clay and straw. Rocks, if miss place one goes bang like a grenade. Dry oven. before building fire about three days or you will cracks in the structure. vent hole is made with straw and small sticks, this will burn out. Next time use a small shovel and less rocks. The easiest clay oven is a dome made from green branches covered with clay and straw inside and out. next on the outside you add rocks and clay. Remember, less rocks more clay and straw. Good video. Made me smile.
so awesome Lilly, I would have liked to see this video go on for like 30 minutes, with the different stages of hardening the clay, and then the process of cooking food with it.

One of the other comments says it washed away... but would an oven like this dry out and harden like in Primitive Technology's videos? I am trying to figure out the right mix of mud, clay, and possible other stuff to make an oven that will dry out from the fire and basicallly become more or less waterproof and permanent.
Crikey Crikeys Many years ago my mother was in the WRVS/Civil Defence and they made a brick cooker/oven in the car park. Many years later they had to get a bulldozer to knock it down, they couldn't do it any other way! Mud will do fine.

Interesting Lilly..How long did it take to dry out the moisture from the clay? The walls looks to be about 10cm thick. One advice, please try not to bend your back, bend your knees because I now have back problems doing the same bending, Can't wait for the next video on the using this clay oven..
I'm thrilled to see other women who are interested in and competent at primitive survival skills. I would do more of it myself but for having chronic fatigue syndrome and not owning any land that I can live on. Gender seems to be an issue with primitive survival skills - I see almost entirely videos made by men. And glancing at the comments here I can see that so many of them are like, 'Hey! Let's hook up! Are you available?' I have many experiences with my competence and knowledge not being respected if I am in a group with other men who also have similar knowledge or more knowledge than me. It's hard for me to compete against them and get their respect. And I do actually have physical weaknesses - I'm small and I wouldn't be able to drag a heavy fallen tree or something which a man might be able to do, but that doesn't mean that I have no hope at all of surviving in the woods, it only means I have to look for alternative methods, such as using smaller fallen branches. It makes me feel like less of a failure if I can see another woman doing something, while knowing she, too, doesn't have a huge amount of physical strength and huge muscles. Women usually aren't encouraged to learn these skills, unless they are lucky enough to be born in a family that made a point of teaching them, or they were ambitious enough to teach themselves entirely on their own. I haven't watched all these videos yet. But anyway thanks for doing this and just know there's at least one female viewer out there who isn't begging you to go out on a date.
+Survival Lilly Yes, at the moment I'm trying to get all my vitamins from food, but I have sometimes tried vitamin pills in the past and probably will again. I do use herbs and am using ginseng at the moment, but I'd rather not do that forever. Right now I'm especially bad because I was exposed to pesticides at work. As long as I stay away from pesticides, I do pretty well!

Haha, don't you just love it when the dog does that. He wants to share the wetness, ha. Here in the southern USA, we have a very dense red clay. It makes some serious building material. The stuff is very dense. It has a habit of dyeing my skin red though when I work with it, ha. I have been doing a digging project the last few months so I have been getting a ton of the stuff.
Hi Lilly, I haven't seen a clay oven using rock. My grandmother actually had a clay oven outdoors to bake her breads. She was native american. I don't remember seeing an opening at the top. I do know it was made in a dome and probably with clay and straw mixture. I admire your enthusiasm , and love for life. Keep giving back to nature as you take from it as I've seen you do. Loved the dream catcher hanging at camp. Wooowee, bet that water was cold! :)

THIS IS SO COOL ! Something I would have never thought of, and with such simple materials ! GREAT VIDEO, LILLY ! The only question I have is: how can you bake inside the oven ? There is no grill to support what you are cooking. Or did I miss something ?
Just a thought from a small amount of ceramic experience, if you could kneed some of the clay (with you hands or feet?) to incorporate a little more water it would help bond the oven together, make the clay easier to work with , make the finished product more uniform and stronger. For the amount of time you spend the finished product looked good and functional. You have fun videos to watch.
Interesting video! When I experimented with a clay oven (many years ago), my group did it in the beehive shape, with the top closed and a very wide opening for the door, just a little less than one fourth of the circumference of the oven. This design forces the smoke and heat to rise up, hit the ceiling and heat it, then exit through the mouth of the oven. The problem with ovens that have a vent on top is that the smoke and heat pass right through the vent and are lost for heating the oven itself.
Great video, Lily :). I hope we can get some follow-up on the oven in a few days/weeks, just to see how it performs when it's walls dry up. Perhaps you could bake some beer bread in it ;).

I'll make one after winter pulls out. Your examples and demonstrations are always in realistic situations. Nothing extreme or outlandish. At minute 1:37 I noticed that the sun made a shadow shaped like a heart just below and to the left of your head. Art imitates nature.
Very good. I was hoping you'll make an over like this for your survival shelter. If I can give one advice. Try to make the chimney higher. The higher the chimney the more it will draw air into the fire. Perhaps you are making it low on purpose to cook on top of it but the tall chimneys will provide more oxygen to the fuel making it burn more efficiently too. Perhaps others have said the same thing. I didn't bother to read all the comments. Good work!

Here in the southern USA, we have a very dense red clay. It makes some serious building material. The stuff is very dense. It has a habit of dyeing my skin red though when I work with it, ha. I have been doing a digging project the last few months so I have been getting a ton of the stuff.

Hi Lilly, I haven't seen a clay oven using rock. My grandmother actually had a clay oven outdoors to bake her breads. She was native american. I don't remember seeing an opening at the top. I do know it was made in a dome and probably with clay and straw mixture. I admire your enthusiasm , and love for life. Keep giving back to nature as you take from it as I've seen you do. Loved the dream catcher hanging at camp. Wooowee, bet that water was cold! :)

I love the area you're in. The bug out camp, and now the pond. That looks like some really nice natural clay you have there. I would either cap the oven or use it more like a rocket stove with the flames coming out of the top. Thanks for sharing.

I came here to learn how to make an oven but it turns out I want to learn more about Lilly. She's so skillful and beautiful. She amazes me. The only question I have is: how can you bake inside the oven ? There is no grill to support what you are cooking. Or did I miss something ?
Just a thought from a small amount of ceramic experience, if you could kneed some of the clay (with you hands or feet?) to incorporate a little more water it would help bond the oven together, make the clay easier to work with , make the finished product more uniform and stronger. For the amount of time you spend the finished product looked good and functional. You have fun videos to watch.

When I experimented with a clay oven (many years ago), my group did it in the beehive shape, with the top closed and a very wide opening for the door, just a little less than one fourth of the circumference of the oven. This design forces the smoke and heat to rise up, hit the ceiling and heat it, then exit through the mouth of the oven.
The problem with ovens that have a vent on top is that the smoke and heat pass right through the vent and are lost for heating the oven itself.

Also helps to mix dried straw grass into the clay for strength if you were planning on making a permanent one at camp.

Frequently if you walk along steep river or lake banks you will come across pockets of clay. Some areas have a lot more than others

Very good. I was hoping you'll make an over like this for your survival shelter. If I can give one advice. Try to make the chimney higher. The higher the chimney the more it will draw air into the fire. Perhaps you are making it low on purpose to cook on top of it but the tall chimneys will provide more oxygen to the fuel making it burn more efficiently too. Perhaps others have said the same thing. I didn't bother to read all the comments. Good work!
