  • Noto is a city in the Syracuse Free Community Consortium in the Sicily region of Italy with 24,154 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Noto is one of the late baroque towns in the Val di Noto that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2002 the UNESCO declared the city of Noto together with Modica, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa, Scicli, Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania and Catania a World Heritage Site. The city of Noto is also called “Garden of Stones‘ ”and owes this name to the magnificent buildings and the imposing, richly decorated churches, which were built from stones from the area. The present city emerged from 1703 southeast of Noto Antica, which was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 1693. As a result, Noto was rebuilt according to plan and uniformly in the style of the Sicilian baroque. It is very pleasant to stroll through the cozy streets with the honey-colored facades of churches, monasteries and noble palaces of the nobles. The view is automatically directed upwards to the decorations and statues, the bulbous balconies with the wrought iron bars and the majestic facades. Regardless of whether you come from the level of the Church of St. Francis and the church of Santa Chiara, characterized by simple elegance, or from the area of San Salvatore and the church of San Domenico, from all directions you can reach the central cathedral of Noto, the cathedral of San Nicolò on the hill via a monumental flight of stairs.
Together with the Palazzo Ducezio opposite and the lateral horseshoe-shaped tree roofs, a majestic harmony results.
The main street through Noto is Corso Vittorio Emanuele. Through the royal city gate Porta Reale Noto you enter the baroque city center, where the main sights are located. The church is dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo and was the seat of the Jesuits in Noto. The main altar and bell come from the Jesuit church in Noto Antica, which was destroyed in the earthquake.
On the main altar there are two marble statues depicting faith and hope. The church preserves numerous works of art, including the paintings "Sacrifice of Isaac" (18th century), the "Flight into Egypt" (18th century), the "Entombment" (16th century), "S. Carlo Borromeo visits the plague sufferers "(17th-18th century)," Madonna with Child and Saints "(18th century)
The late baroque towns of the Val di Noto form a group of towns in the Val di Noto in southeastern Sicily that form a unified ensemble of the late baroque. These include the cities of Catania, Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa and Scicli.
The eight cities in the south-east of Sicily, which are characteristic of the settlement pattern and urban form of this region, are constantly threatened by earthquakes and eruptions of Mount Etna.
