add a thin layer of sand on top of the saw dust. keeps the top from burning out and creates a kind of kiln. burns slower and more evenly ; )

I was surprise how well this worked and the small amount of ash clean up. It is a long running, small low heat fire and best used for a small and well insulated area

It would be wonderful to see a workshop tour, and tell us which equipment you use. Brilliant work, it is so bad, you don't deliver small goods outside Japan (
Very smart. I've seen people try to make sawdust work for heating and their designs weren't very good. This design is pretty smart. The only issue I see is creosote buildup. You would have to keep on top of chimney cleaning, but other than that, a great way to get heat.

My Father had the same but bigger in his shop in Bulgaria.It is extremely efficient -sometimes would go absolutely transparent because of the heat.

Yeah, he's well-behaved, pretty quiet and keeps out of the way - best kind of work colleague/companion.
Idea, use carbon felt in place of the saw dust roll the felt up into logs and place them around the center pipe that has lots of holes drilled into it with carbon wicks that absorb liquid heat or another liquid like alcohol that you can light at the bottom of the tube and will light all the other wicks that draw out the fuel soaked carbon felt with heated air hitting the top of the stove then drafted across the top of the stove and up and out through an exuast flute. An alternative way to heat and cook by creating a huge burner fuel cell. Depending on the amount of air flow through the system the fuel cell should last three times longer then burning saw dustnor other wood chips. 😊
Good idea, but it defeats the purpose of using up waste (saw dust/wood chips, etc) from his projects.

What is the wood that you have on the floor of your workshop?
Cool, but if you want to be more efficient you should by briquette or pellet machine and make your own briquettes and pellets.
I agree. Its more efficient burn wise, but not efficient when it comes to having to make the briqs and pellets when he already has tons of waste sawdust laying around from a days work.
I saw this yesterday, so today I tried to make one that is functionally the same out of galvanized steel HVAC ducting. I put a cap on one end, attached it with some rivets and sealed the edge with silver tape. Over the top is a simple rain cap. It looked promising once I got the fire started but when I put the rain cap on, the fire died within 15 seconds. It must be that even though the rain cap is open, not enough oxygen is getting into the tube. But adding a few additional air holes towards the top of the can did not help much. Do you have a hole in the center-bottom of the cylinders that you burn the sawdust in, to let air in?
