So when I was little, my dad always played The Avett Brothers and I just sang them without understanding how beautiful their songs really are. And then I grew up and I remembered this song and searched for it and everything is changed… I think I can actually understand a lot more about my father now with these songs that just randomly get stuck in my head….
I don't think age has much to do with "growing up". Some people "grow up" more in a few months time than others who spend a lot of years comfortably in their early teens. I'm going to go out on a limb and say such growing isn't comfortable nor by choice. If you look at someone and are amazed at how much they have their life together I can almost guarantee you they will deny it and instead just say they did what they had to. Also a lot of them will more than likely give credit to the Almighty for letting them do as well as they have.
Seth Avett sang this live at the Knoxville concert yesterday, and I bet you half the audience was in tears. It was beautiful. We were all singing along, and my god his voice sounds better live. I'll love the Avett Brothers till I die die die.
I feel this to an extent. I have an amazing and just all around incredible bf now but this song reminds me of my ex husband. He wasn’t great but we were kids when we met and it’s hard on me. He is addicted to drugs and I just hope and pray that one day he will get off drugs to be a father. Even though he was abusive if he decides to get his life together I’d fully support him. 😓
I have always loved this song but listening to it now just gives it more meaning. Realizing that love will come into all of our lives and sometimes it leaves and hate is what remains, but love always comes back. Afterall thats all anyone wants...is just to be loved.
In middle school our English teacher showed us this song, and explained how much he loved this song. Later in the year we learned that he was moving away from his family and job. We asked why he was moving and he just said there was something waiting there for him. But he promised to come to our graduation because we where the last year of kids he would teach
when I was little, I was raised on power ballads and sweet acoustic lullabies. I’m revisiting some of them and hearing this again just brought me almost to tears. It’s a song of humanity;.. all we really want is to be loved. Hate gets in the way, but can they really exist without love? They’re polar opposites, and yet.. they’re inseparable. It’s beautiful, really.
True song writing is not dead!! I was getting very depressed over the state of music until I heard this...brilliance at the basics. It wins every time!
A man sang Bob Dylan’s Lay Lady Lay to me years ago & we were in love until Army ‘s service took his life, he gave me children & I see him in their eyes
I’ve been obsessed with this song forever. I’ve recently met a guy in LA who is the total opposite of me and we have both wondered why we are so connected and electric together and I just realized that he is my Hate. Can’t stop crying like a child.
Cutest. Love song. Ever. I don't know if its just all these great love songs I've been hearing lately, or the great and terrible, sweet and bittersweet, easy and god-forsakenly difficult things I've gone through lately, but I've just been able to connect with songs, and relive and revive emotions so much lately. It's kind of crazy, in a sense, in a good way.
"There's a fine line between love and hate" is a very real statement c: Whether you hate someone or you love someone, you still care deeply about them. The only difference is one's negative and the other is positive~
I found this song due to a boy singing it at my school's talent show, and it is really a lot more meaningful than the rest of those middle schoolers will understand. (Mostly because they all just giggled whenever he said "drink")
Today, this song has helped me cope. My husband has bipolar with homicidal and suicidal ideation. When he is episodic, like today, his thought patterns become scattered and hard to follow. We only just married (gone to live in my car together since we can’t yet afford a place) and he abandoned me at a mental health appointment… taking off with my car, my wallet, my birth certificate, my clothes, my bedding, my stuffed bear, and my heart. I just wanted a phone call or some kind of sign, too. I can forgive everything. But I needed to know he was alive. I have this forlorn hope that someday he will be better and he will still want to be with me.
I wasted so much of my life as Hate and wasted years of Love's life. To the alcoholics out there: please don't let this song affirm your relationship, rather let it wake you up to how dysfunctional your relationship is. Look what you are doing to Love.
I'm married to an alcoholic, and I love this song... I sent it to a fellow Al-Anon member and she related too. I know it's arrogant to relate to "love" and place our husbands in the "hate" category... And Al-anon's are typically a sick people as well... We love to try to fix, manage, and control people (these are our defects of character)... BUT I do relate so much to this song anyways. Especially the ending of this song. Just wishing he comes home safe.
"Love has been waiting, patient and kind. Just wanting a phone call or some kind of sign, That the one that she cares for, who's out of his mind, Will make it back safe to her arms." I love you Joshua Kaleb Pruitt.
I've been going through some self evaluation, I always thought of this as a sad love song to someone else, but lately, I think it's a love some to one's self.
I once created NPC's in a game of DnD based of this song. Love was a fairly low level bard and Hate was a grizzled war veteran Fighter with a drinking problem.
I think the relationship starts that way, but the fact that he apologizes leads me to believe that this is a song that takes you through that journey of him changing. He could be just saying it but I feel like Hate is really apologizing for his actions and Love is just reminding him that it's alright for him to mess up because she loves him anyway.
Oh and also: I think Hate thinks Love left because of something he said to her. So he's really indifferent when she sends the letter to hide his sadness that she's gone. He's lonely and that's why he greets everyone on the streets. He drinks all night so that he won't feel remorse when he sees Love again, but it doesn't work. He feels bad and apologizes. The reason she apologizes for leaving is because (like I said) she really does love him and knows he missed her. (That's just my idea)
It's a message that it doesn't matter how much hate and indifference is out in the world, because love is there no matter what...yours and that's it forever. BTW It is not good to be indifferent. Indifference is a lack of care. One closes their eyes to emotion and passion when they are indifferent. It may be easier, but without emotion, there is no love or its antithesis...hate.
I had a 6yr love affair with a woman whom i prayed to meet and had met in another life. Idk if i played it wrong, but this song encompasses our relationship. Love and hate because they come from the same place. Id do it all over again.
good stuff like this comes out often, you just have to look for it. Im glad that your 13 and looking for real music. just keep your search going and dont get caught up in the mainstream. carry on young buck.
that is exactly why i broke up with my ex, because i (at the time, though the tables have turned as of late) was "hate" and i was tired of feeling like a rotten person while dating him because, he, like "love" couldn't stand up for himself.
"My vacation's ending, I'm coming home late The weather was fine and the ocean was great And I can't wait to see you again" Hate reads the letter and throws it away "No one here cares if you go or you stay I barely even noticed that you were away I'll see you or I won't, whatever" Love sings a song as she sails through the sky The water looks bluer through her pretty eyes And everyone knows it whenever she flies And also when she comes down Hate keeps his head up and walks through these streets Every stranger and drifter he greets And shakes hands with every loner he meets With a serious look on his face Love arrives safely with suitcase in tow Carrying with her the good things we know A reason to live and a reason to grow To trust and to hold and to care Hate sits alone on the hood of his car Without much regard to the moon or the stars Lazily killing the last of a jar Of the strongest stuff you can drink Love takes a taxi, a young man drives As soon he sees her hope fills his eyes But tears follow after at the end of the ride Because he might never see her again Patience, patience, patience Hate gets home lucky to still be alive He screams over the sidewalk and into the drive The clock in the kitchen says 2:55 And the clock in the kitchen is slow Love has been waiting patient and kind Just wanting a phone call or some kind of sign That the one that she cares for who's out of his mind Will make it back safe to her arms Hate stumbles forward and leans in the door Weary head hung down, eyes to the floor He says, "Love, I'm sorry, " and she says, "What for? I'm yours and that's it, whatever I should not have been gone for so long I'm yours and that's it, forever Your mine and that's it, forever"
My Love left for 8 weeks to go abroad. And I have been a complete basket case. Been doing okay, and trying so hard, but just so unhappy. Even being unhappy for missing and needing someone this much. She comes back this weekend. I told her how sorry I am for being so difficult these past months. She said, "I'm yours, that's it, forever."
my theory is that once love and hate meet at the end of the song hate no longer is "hate" anymore. he is broken and humble. he is now love. with out love there is hate but with love there is forgiveness and and humility and goodness.
So when I was little, my dad always played The Avett Brothers and I just sang them without understanding how beautiful their songs really are. It’s almost been 4 years & I still think about him when I hear this song. If only we were the same people we used to be
Goddamn.

This band proves that you don't need repeating hooks and chorus' to create a brilliant song. Poetry at its best.
An amazing man sang and played this for me on his guitar yesterday, and I think I'm in love......
update?
Had that very same experience the other day
How we doing 1 year later?
Any chance it worked out?
MARRIED HIMM?
In middle school our English teacher showed us this song, and explained how much he loved this song. Later in the year we learned that he was moving away from his family and job. We asked why he was moving and he just said there was something waiting there for him. But he promised to come to our graduation because we where the last year of kids he would teach
Did you ever find out why he moved?
And??
What happens after that

when I was little, I was raised on power ballads and sweet acoustic lullabies. I’m revisiting some of them and hearing this again just brought me almost to tears. It’s a song of humanity;.. all we really want is to be loved. Hate gets in the way, but can they really exist without love? They’re polar opposites, and yet.. they’re inseparable. @boogieboy
Hate can be followed back to fear. Find the fear, face it in order to heal & expand love.
To me this is a parable to motivate us all to be more loving, and to love one another unconditionally. I'm playing this at my wedding!
Still listening 2024 unarguably one of the best tear jerkers ever but with love we win at the end of it all
True song writing is not dead!! I was getting very depressed over the state of music until I heard this...brilliance at the basics. It wins every time!
Some of the best songwriters since Simon & Garfunkel....beautiful stuff.
This makes me cry like an idiot. Beautiful song.
I was just going to make that comment
Some days you're love
Some days you're hate
Too true!
A man sang Bob Dylan’s Lay Lady Lay to me years ago & we were in love until Army ‘s service took his life, he gave me children & I see him in their eyes
Had to listen to this in language arts. Its beautiful. Im so glad our teacher shared this.
I saw This live like a week ago. Cried so hard, such a beautiful song.
+Aaron Wise i'm going today
I listen to this song when I need a good cry. Ballads tend to strike a chord on my heartstrings... :)
My dad always played this song for me when i was little, this is great hearing again!!
Arguably their best song.
I really like I Wish I Was too
Well I’d really like to argue, but I quit... that’ll be five bucks!
I’ve been obsessed with this song forever. I’ve recently met a guy in LA who is the total opposite of me and we have both wondered why we are so connected and electric together and I just realized that he is my Hate. Can’t stop crying like a child.
Same 🖤
This song always causes me to reflect on my life and those who love me. To them, I can only say "I'm sorry for the pain I caused. You deserve better."
I saw a comment on another Avett video & some guy said, "If I could sing like Seth, every word outta my mouth would be in song." SAME!! :)
Such a brilliant yet simple premise, Love writes a letter to hate
"I'm yours and that's it, forever" I wish when you told me that, it was true. I still love you. I always will.
Sorry for your loss
I hope you’re okay now 💛
Honestly, this is one of my favorite love songs ever... Avett Brothers rock the lyrics and the simplistic beautiful melody

this song just completely summarizes my relationship. no matter what you do, i'm yours and that's it, forever.
I want to thank my friend for sharing this song with me. Thanks Lindsey!
First heard this song in my English. Teacher played it for the book "We All Fall Down" I've been in love ever since
The great thing about this song is the Truth. Hate needs Love. Love just is.
Slammed brought me here.. and I love it

His parents are raising him right!
I was there too :) It was beautiful, and his connection to the audience was palpable. They are amazing.
i think this song means that being filled with love with make your path through life easier but if your filled with hate it will be way tougher
This song is amazing!!!
I got a little teary eyed!
I saw this live for the first time this weekend in Greensboro. It was amazing. I kind of liked them before the show. Hooked big time now.
This is their best song…in my opinion.
The story telling of it all 🙌

My personal favorite song by them. Super sad though, and I cry most of the time.
This song brings a tear to my eye and a special warmth to my soul. It is so amazing.

Great song~ it reminds me so much of Camp Fitch :)
Now this is a simple favorite. :)
I really like the end, I think that's when it either makes me smile or cry, just from happiness. It's a sweet song.
I love this song! Cheers from Brazil.

It's like they wrote this song just for me.
This is pure poetry. It breaks my heart a little everytime I hear it.

Goosebumps. Goosebumps. Goosebumps....

such a good song. brilliant lyrics, and his voice, just so amazing.
It's just as heartbreaking as it was the first time I heard it in 2008.
God I love this song 💖.
For Luis. I love him, and it is the loneliest thing I've ever done.
Back to cry again... why did you do this to me? Years later and I still can't stand it... not that you'll ever see this.
Amazing song, thanks Charles Baker!
I hope you are doing great.
I miss you.
The Avett Brothers will always amaze me
Saw them at interlochen. I love this song! I'm 13 love there music!!

What*

You know those songs that remind you of a specific time in your life? This song is the fall of my junior year in high school
not for nothing, but this is also the ongoing relationship many of us have internally with ourselves
"My vacation's ending, I'm coming home late
The weather was fine and the ocean was great
And I can't wait to see you again"
Hate reads the letter and throws it away
"No one here cares if you go or you stay
I barely even noticed that you were away
I'll see you or I won't, whatever"
Love sings a song as she sails through the sky
The water looks bluer through her pretty eyes
And everyone knows it whenever she flies
And also when she comes down
Hate keeps his head up and walks through these streets
Every stranger and drifter he greets
And shakes hands with every loner he meets
With a serious look on his face
Love arrives safely with suitcase in tow
Carrying with her the good things we know
A reason to live and a reason to grow
To trust and to hold and to care
Hate sits alone on the hood of his car
Without much regard to the moon or the stars
Lazily killing the last of a jar
Of the strongest stuff you can drink
Love takes a taxi, a young man drives
As soon he sees her hope fills his eyes
But tears follow after at the end of the ride
Because he might never see her again
Patience, patience, patience
Hate gets home lucky to still be alive
He screams over the sidewalk and into the drive
The clock in the kitchen says 2:55
And the clock in the kitchen is slow
Love has been waiting patient and kind
Just wanting a phone call or some kind of sign
That the one that she cares for who's out of his mind
Will make it back safe to her arms
Hate stumbles forward and leans in the door
Weary head hung down, eyes to the floor
He says, "Love, I'm sorry, " and she says, "What for?
I'm yours and that's it, whatever
I should not have been gone for so long
I'm yours and that's it, forever
Your mine and that's it, forever"
My Love left for 8 weeks to go abroad. And I have been a complete basket case. Been doing okay, and trying so hard, but just so unhappy. Even being unhappy for missing and needing someone this much.
She comes back this weekend. I told her how sorry I am for being so difficult these past months.
She said, "I'm yours, that's it, forever."
Best Avett brothers song
Its a love-hate relationship (badum ta) :) but really, its a great song, I can connect with it pretty well.

This song is great amazing and it sends a chilling sensation down ur spine a good chill
Beautiful song! Love and hate at the same time!!

hope
