Continue from the 1st comment; Lao people used to be called Tai Lao, we are the products of TAI bloodline, that's why the languages are almost the same...Peace you all my Tai brothers and sisters...
The Tai dam people used to have their own kingdom named Bon Man, which included Huaphan of Laos, a large part of present-day Son La province, some parts of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa province in Vietnam. It was established around the year of 1369 when the Mongolian lost control of Yunnan. But this kingdom was short-lived. It had a military clash with Dai Viet in 1478 and was conquered by Dai Viet in 1479. The entire kingdom became part of Dai Viet ever since. In 1893, the French cut Huaphan to Laos.
There is a Thai (Siamese) scholar that believes "Tai" does not mean Free, but it means "people", because people in rural parts of Laos and Thailand referred to each other as "Tai". Does that make sense? "Tai Dum" becomes "Black people" because of their clothing. "Tai Lao" becomes "Lao people". The Tai Dum indeed are great. They could possibly be an example of the Tai people before Indianization.
Huaphan used to be part of Dai Viet (meaning "The Great Viet", former name of Vietnam) until the French cut it from Vietnam and gave it to Laos in 1893.
