Just finished the audio of Blade Itself a few days ago, perfect timing! I actually hated the narration at fist because it felt so over the top. I almost returned the audio and switched to the paper, but glad I didn't! Once I got more into it, it clicked that he was playing up the humour with the voices and it changed how I understood the whole book. Well worth sticking with the audio.

Just finished this book today and you articulated my thoughts PERFECTLY!
Also, I loved how the characters narrated themselves too, but I forgot what the word is for the personality of the narrator. Then you said it was voice haha.
I definitely loved how all these characters thought about each other, it was so real and believable. It just adds a lot of depth to all of them.
I'm very excited for Before They Are Hanged. I want to know what Bayaz is all about and Bethod as well. Bethod seems to be being set up as a big villain? High hopes for him.

Great review. I like The Blade Itself a lot and have recommended it to friends who've gone on to love the series but TBI is probably the weakest. It was Abercrombie's first book and for all it does, that's very impressive. As you say there isn't much plot and most of what is happening only makes sense when we get answers in book 3. The first half is strong but then the second half slows down and the big things the book was building to are resolved in deliberate anti-climaxes, with a lot of page time devoted to setting up the next book.
Joe said that if he rewrote it now he'd inject a lot more events, which is apparent when reading A Little Hatred. Though we get so much time with these characters and they're complicated; charming, repulsive, endearing. Rereading it is like visiting old friends. So as much as Joe has grown as a writer, I love the characters in this original trilogy most.

According to me, Game of Thrones and First Law shine at their own spots. Game of thrones came at point when Grimdark was not prevelent, and Joe Ambercrombie came to master it. Just like JRR Tolkien and Robert Jordan. This was supposed to me birthday gift, but due to Kingkiller, I have postponed it till after Kingkiller. And some comment said that this channel is under rated. I definitely agree! That text style reminds me of Assassin's Creed

Abercrombie books are some of the funniest I’ve ever read. Maps - he didn’t want to do a map so that he’d be free to add in different places & open the world up in the future without having to decide and put it in stone in book one. There are some pretty accurate fan made maps online tho 👍

I just finished the trilogy and immediately moved on to Best Served Cold. I’m loving it, and am surprised how much so, cause I’m not great with violence, and can get woozy from description alone. Jezel surprised me and became my favorite character by the end of the series. But I don't find the series to be GRIMDARK so much. After finishing the series, I find that the characters aren't that morally gray. They are trying to do the right thing, in a world that punishes those who do the right thing. Yeah, the world may be GRIMDARK, but I find that all three of the protagonists were decent people (and even a few of the secondary protagonists were decent people). Their arcs only get better with the next books!

I feel like I'm the only person who didn't absolutely fall in love with First Law when I read it. I'm not sure if it's because something got spoiled for me by looking at the back cover of A Little Hatred (though it's something that's very obvious throughout the series), or if it's just the writing didn't quite click for me (things like the constant repetition of phrases or Glokta licking his gums... I like Glokta a lot, but I get it... dude licks his missing teeth). I've read the original trilogy plus the Heroes, and still want to read the rest of the series because I do like them, I just didn't think they were the best thing I've ever read like it seems most everyone else thinks.

Joe Abercrombie's writing is great but Steven Pacey's narration makes it special. It was such an engaging listen and I don't really care about the grimdark genre. First book felt a bit lacking in terms of plot but the caste of characters was interesting enough to make me continue. And tbh it didn't feel too dark (nihilistic), characters have realistic morality.

Chapter 1 and 2 both were life and death battles.

I love how nine fingers keeps referring to the fencing tournament as the "sword game" 😅.

Lately, I've heard so much about the First Law trilogy and it sounds truly amazing. I gotta read it soon. I feel like I'd love it.

Being new to the science fiction fantasy genre, Joe Abacrombie writes in a way that makes you hold your breath for chapters at a time. Steven Pacey narrates the audio books and brings them to life, with a capital L.
Read all of the sequels and stand alone books, things come together, piece by piece.
