You got hit at X:XX, what gives? There is no collision between the corners of the player (the red square) and the blue dots. This is why you often see a lot of close calls and why I regularly cut it close by running the corner of the player into the dots to buy myself just that extra bit of time. To check collision between a blue dot and the player, the game performs a check between the pixels of a blue dot and 5 different points on the player. These 5 points are the center of the player and the middle of its individual edges. When blue dots are moving fast, the collisions can miss even if it should register as a hit. This is most evident on level 7. See the level 7 answer below for more information.

I hate how a random line by a youtuber spreads around like fire. It gets annoying fast. Especially when every game has glitches, small or big, the "16 yo in 2007" part is just unnecessary. Just say "it is a buggy level."

I know this speed run is old but I love the 7 year olds with no speed run experience calling it cheating. If you spend 10 seconds on Google you would know that it is because the game scans for hit boxes approximately every 2 frames. The balls are going so fast on these levels that even if the ball does directly impact the square, the game doesn't scan it in time.

Okay, so I gave your speedrun version a try, and it really bothers me that you removed both the WASD controls and the music entirely. Back when I was aiming for a deathless run, it's not like there was an option to disable just the music and not the in-game sounds, so that idea alone to remove things to make the speedrun easier for your subjective case is already questionable. Still, the music is obviously not a major thing, but what about WASD? I used to play the game using my left hand and WASD just so I could grip the mouse at all times and press the OK easily (not that that matters as you can just Tab to it and then press space anyway in the Snubbyland version); and you can also do some noob strats for say level 3 by using 2 hands. So in other words, while your speedrun version is a truly amazing tool for practice (the level select in the Coolmathgames version doesn't work nearly the same as restarting for practicing), I think altering the original version shouldn't be encouraged - the Coolmathgames version is already something I have 0 nostalgia for - it's just not something that I played a decade ago and no one at the time had the option to use level select for practice - which is fine honestly, and allows the speedruns to be more optimized as well as making Shiromanavi's optimization efforts that much more impressive. Although, the bottom line I think is that it should be encouraged to perform the actual runs on the Snubbyland version or at the very least restore these missing features in your modified version. Hope what I'm saying makes sense, and of course not to downplay your achievement or be in any way disparaging - you've really showcased an impressive amount of skill and precision and that should definitely be appreciated. Hi Hachimen, thanks for the reply and kind words. It is true that the original version did not allow you to disable only the background music or mute it entirely. Often times I play without headphones so I hear nothing. There are no audio ques in this game, so the only real purpose it serves is to aid in the verification process. However it is true that the music is a vital part of the nostalgia for many and definitely something that players remember most. Yes the WASD controls had been removed and this was a slight oversight on my part. I play strictly with the arrow keys but that does not mean the WASD controls should have been removed. I believe they were removed as they conflicted with the 'd' hotkey for going to the previous level. I will move the level hotkeys to other keys and also add the WASD controls back and upload this in the resources. When I started to run this game I did play on the CoolMathGames version mainly due to the convenience of the level selector. Before that when I played casually I too played the original Snubbyland version and didn't see the later levels for a long time. Shiromanavi's run(s) is something that I would watch and be truly amazed by. He really set the bar for this game and his runs are an incredible achievement. Yeah, I think sticking to the original is simply a healthy habit because we don't always know if something got changed on accident or due to a possible oversight. I'm not one to be overly anal about purism, though, so if something was tested and works fine, then I'm fine with it. It is after all the choice of a runner what to run on; if some discrepancy is found further down the line, the only victim would be the runner in question because their efforts get invalidated. Anyway, as for the background music, I feel it'd be best, if it's impossible/too complicated to add a mute feature, to have 2 versions - one with the music and the other without. It just feels weird to practice on a musicless version if I'm already used to filtering it out - so that's my personal take on the matter. Also, something more interesting - a new strat! I found that this th-cam.com/video/fa5_9qJNB0E/w-d-xo.html is fairly consistent and saves a whole cycle, which amounts to a bit over half a second. I can't help but use 2 hands for this one because I'm not so good at the game, but it feels so much easier that way. Really excited about this find!
Hey that's a pretty good find! I had only experimented once with taking the top path on level 9 but kept getting hit. Gave your strat a go and was able to save nearly a full second over the strat you see in this video. Will need to experiment with it some more to get it consistent, but there is potential. Also thanks for the shoutout in your 0 death run. Really great run and great strats. I'm fairly sure I watched this video back in the day and even learned many of the strats from it as that is exactly how I used to play (although 27 was a bit fast for me)
No problem at all. I used to have Shiroma's video in there, but I think he's good at around 8 mil views, haha. And yeah, FYI, I tested the strat for consistency, and it's definitely a lot better than I am at level 10, so there's that. I'll probably go over the rest of the levels the next couple of days and see if I can put a speedrun together, so let's hope for the best.

something to know when doing the 2nd installment (you probably won't use this) on the 4th level with the key in it, when you grab the key and die the wall will close but you can go inside it and continue the level. it's a bug probably
As someone who has also speedran this game, I can definitely say that level 26 is the most annoying level in the game. Level 12 for me is surprisingly annoying
Yeah I used to struggle a lot with 26. Just play it again and again and you'll develop a feel for the timing and rhythm of the level. Need to stay calm and not panic or rush. Most challenging level in this run for me was level 18 as it was a new strat, you're thrown straight into action as soon as you spawn, and there's not a lot of room for error so it's very easy to miss a coin or two on the top/bottom rows.
No, absolutely not. I mean, I picked a weird set of strats for 26, so I sort of skip the first cycle and pause 2-3 times depending where I am, and I find that cozily consistent. 18, though… I guess the fastest strat is not compulsory, but the idea behind speedrunning is to at least try and see if you can get good with the top strats. And only then will you truly realize why 18 is an absolute nightmare of a stage and easily the hardest in the game.
Just a thought, but if going diagonally is twice as fast, instead of going to the right for example, should you go right but alternate up and down, in a criss-cross pattern, would this be faster? just a thought
That would be nice, but unfortunately going diagonally will not make you move to the right any faster. You move 3 pixels per frame to the left/right and also 3 pixels up/down. When you're holding right, you'll only ever be moving no faster than 3 pixels in that direction. If you also press up, you'll also move 3 pixels upwards, but this will not affect your right speed movement.
The walls will not misalign you. This is due to how the walls keep you from going out of bounds. When the player walks towards a wall and tries to go beyond that wall, the game will push you in the opposite direction by 3 pixels. Because the player moves 3 pixels and the walls push you 3 pixels, you are unable to move by anything other than a multiple of 3 pixels. It is possible to be pushed by a wall and actually move in the same direction as the push to move a total of 6 pixels in one direction in a single frame. This is the fastest possible speed you can move, but it can only be done for a frame, maybe two, and requires you to clip into the wall to be able to perform it. This is actually used on Level 1 for the Individual Level leaderboards on speedrun.com . It can be seen at the start of the level when the player exits the first tunnel on the bottom, moving 6 pixels to the right instead of the standard 3, allowing a time of 3.26 rather than 3.27.

I completely understand where you are coming from by suggesting runs on the Snubbyland version should be encouraged. Often times you see people practicing strats on consoles with modified roms, game genie, etc, before switching back to the original to perform the run, even though the game would play the same on the modified versions. Perhaps I should have done the same, regardless of creating the speedrun version and knowing with confidence that it is true to the original gameplay.

Yeah, I think sticking to the original is simply a healthy habit because we don't always know if something got changed on accident or due to a possible oversight. I'm not one to be overly anal about purism, though, so if something was tested and works fine, then I'm fine with it. It is after all the choice of a runner what to run on; if some discrepancy is found further down the line, the only victim would be the runner in question because their efforts get invalidated.
Anyway, as for the background music, I feel it'd be best, if it's impossible/too complicated to add a mute feature, to have 2 versions - one with the music and the other without. It just feels weird to practice on a musicless version if I'm already used to filtering it out - so that's my personal take on the matter.
Also, something more interesting - a new strat! I found that this th-cam.com/video/fa5_9qJNB0E/w-d-xo.html is fairly consistent and saves a whole cycle, which amounts to a bit over half a second. I can't help but use 2 hands for this one because I'm not so good at the game, but it feels so much easier that way. Really excited about this find!
Hey that's a pretty good find! I had only experimented once with taking the top path on level 9 but kept getting hit. Gave your strat a go and was able to save nearly a full second over the strat you see in this video. Will need to experiment with it some more to get it consistent, but there is potential. Also thanks for the shoutout in your 0 death run. Really great run and great strats. I'm fairly sure I watched this video back in the day and even learned many of the strats from it as that is exactly how I used to play (although 27 was a bit fast for me)
No problem at all. I used to have Shiroma's video in there, but I think he's good at around 8 mil views, haha. And yeah, FYI, I tested the strat for consistency, and it's definitely a lot better than I am at level 10, so there's that. I'll probably go over the rest of the levels the next couple of days and see if I can put a speedrun together, so let's hope for the best.

As someone who has also speedran this game, I can definitely say that level 26 is the most annoying level in the game. Level 12 for me is surprisingly annoying
Yeah I used to struggle a lot with 26. Just play it again and again and you'll develop a feel for the timing and rhythm of the level. Need to stay calm and not panic or rush. Most challenging level in this run for me was level 18 as it was a new strat, you're thrown straight into action as soon as you spawn, and there's not a lot of room for error so it's very easy to miss a coin or two on the top/bottom rows.

No, absolutely not. I mean, I picked a weird set of strats for 26, so I sort of skip the first cycle and pause 2-3 times depending where I am, and I find that cozily consistent. 18, though… I guess the fastest strat is not compulsory, but the idea behind speedrunning is to at least try and see if you can get good with the top strats. And only then will you truly realize why 18 is an absolute nightmare of a stage and easily the hardest in the game.

Just a thought, but if going diagonally is twice as fast, instead of going to the right for example, should you go right but alternate up and down, in a criss-cross pattern, would this be faster? just a thought
That would be nice, but unfortunately going diagonally will not make you move to the right any faster. You move 3 pixels per frame to the left/right and also 3 pixels up/down. When you're holding right, you'll only ever be moving no faster than 3 pixels in that direction. If you also press up, you'll also move 3 pixels upwards, but this will not affect your right speed movement.

The walls will not misalign you. This is due to how the walls keep you from going out of bounds. When the player walks towards a wall and tries to go beyond that wall, the game will push you in the opposite direction by 3 pixels. Because the player moves 3 pixels and the walls push you 3 pixels, you are unable to move by anything other than a multiple of 3 pixels.
It is possible to be pushed by a wall and actually move in the same direction as the push to move a total of 6 pixels in one direction in a single frame. This is the fastest possible speed you can move, but it can only be done for a frame, maybe two, and requires you to clip into the wall to be able to perform it. This is actually used on Level 1 for the Individual Level leaderboards on speedrun.com . It can be seen at the start of the level when the player exits the first tunnel on the bottom, moving 6 pixels to the right instead of the standard 3, allowing a time of 3.26 rather than 3.27.
