Try affixing Post-It notes (the Super Sticky kind) to the back of the small card, hanging down off the bottom. Then once you've fed in the card, even after it's up where you want it for typing, the feed rollers are still able to hold onto the sticky note and control the position of the card. Then gently peel away the Post-It note after ejecting it. This works well for me. Not a ton of added thickness, and not a lot of futzing with the zigzag page.

Yes, fine explanation and practical in use. Nice that you've mentioned the vintage instructional videos with Lenore Fenton, the Godess of typing.. Her envelope fliping is amazing.

This is a great tip Joe! I always have issues when typing on small pieces of paper or cards. Can't wait to try this! Thanks so much 😊

Thank you! I have a few machines that have card holders, but didn't know how to use them until watching this video. Just think of the librarians who typed up all the cards that went into the card catalogs. And in old movies, people would hand out calling cards to people they just met and to the butler. The cards may have been typed.

I learnt something the other day that perhaps you didn’t know also? That is - if you press and HOLD the space bar down as you type other letters, it doesn’t advance the carriage. Good for ! And underline one character, turning any key into a “dead key”. I’m not sure if all mechanisms do this, but I tried a few in my collection and they worked. I thought that was cool.

The Royal Mercury and similar do a slight motion when you press the space bar and the rest when you release it, so you can use this to bold your text if you go over it a second time :p

It's really cool that you tried this technique on many different machines.
I find it easier to first fold the sheet with the bottom edge 6 mm from the top edge, then straighten the sheet turn it over and do another fold with the two edges together.
I love the videos by Lenore Fenton. She also shows another trick for holding post cards with a slit in a bigger card sheet. I find it also works for business cards if the slit is smaller.

My Royal DeLuxe (1938) has one card finger on the right. It looks like it came that way.

I saw this described in a 1949 Smith Corona secretary's typing manual, and it was a revelation. They suggested that you staple each end of the fold, so it doesn't open in the typewriter.

    Joe,
Hippie grunginess is one of my strongest associations in my life as a typist, staying up all night with Sarah's Art History Minor, as she wrote pages out on foolscap and my AudioVisual Communicatios grad school work, on a portable Smith Corona, which may be somewhere deep in a crawl space in this house.

7:47 why the need for fingers and a bail? I thought the fingers remained for the index cards?

I'm interested in typing on a blank playing card. Do you know if this would be possible ? I believe that the typewriter is an IBM a lot like the first on you used. It belonged to my Dad so that's why I'm not that familiar.
Thanks for the tips and information.

Depending on how stiff the playing card is, it might be difficult rolling into the platen. Also, the smooth finish of the playing card might not take regular typewriter ink very well without smearing. But don’t let me dissuade you, I’d love to know if you succeed in doing it.

@@Joe_VanCleave Thank you for responding. I didn't realize how ridged these cards were until I got this idea.
I'm wanting to put bible verse on them.
Maybe I can have them printed on somewhere for a reasonable price.
      Thank you
