DIY Disc Bound Sketchbook

  • In this video I'll show you the steps and supplies I used to make a customized disc bound sketchbook.
I show how to modify the disc bound system so you can use an adjustable three-hole punch instead of purchasing an expensive Arc hole punch ($52.99). This method can also be made using a single hole punch.
I also show how to modify the Arc covers to fit your sketchbook and other types of materials you can adapt to make covers.
This method allows you to customize your sketchbook to fit your needs, with the paper you want and the size you prefer.
You will be able to make your perfect sketchbook!
    Materials Used:
adjustable three-hole punch (you can also use a single hole punch)
Staples Arc System 1" expansion discs ($2.99 for 12)
Staples Arc System poly covers - assorted designs ($1.99)
    or...pocket folder ($1.99)
    or...reversible place mat (Walmart - $1.88)
your choice of a variety of papers
    I used:
    Canson sketchbook paper
    Canson XL watercolor paper
    Strathmore toned tan paper
    Strathmore toned gray paper
    construction paper for dividers

This is such an excellent, economic solution for us hard up artists! Thank you so much for sharing.

this is such a great idea! I haven used the Arc punch but as you said, the holes are too close to the edge. I have used quilt template plastic for covers but they got brittle and broke. I still love the idea, though! I made one using my 2 hole punch that I use the most. I use binder rings to hold them together and they are secure. My cover is some teal fake snakeskin that wraps around with a flap that has an elastic loop that holds it shut.

OMG. You did exactly what I was thinking, but I couldn't find anyone who was doing it. I was thinking of buying an Arc hole punch, even though I have a hole puncher. Girl you're the bomb! Thank you!

What an inspiration! I would like to save my sketches and paintings in one place, in chronological order and this way makes that possible, no matter what paper I did the work on! I am so glad I found this video!

Genius! So simple and practical. I've just started to buy watercolour paper in sheets to cut costs. This is brilliant, being able to create a portable sketchbook with paper and cover of choice, then scan and store. Plus it's a great system to easily remove ugly messes and hide them away... although I usually learn most from those mistakes. I always start a new pad when I think I've ruined it by doing something experimental that turns out terrible... you have solved my problem. I think I'm going to keep and cherish my ugly stage/messes in a separate book to fondly look back on. Truely, you are a diamond. Thank You x

Thank you, I'm glad you liked the video and it helped you. I don't like to think of any artwork as ugly...instead it's just "unfinished". Remember...you can always cover it with gesso and start over 😊

I get all my discs at Staples. They list them as metal expanders in the binder supplies. 😊
