The birth of Sancedes! Hands down my favorite vocal pairing of the series. This number was even better during their concert tour. It was amazing to see it live. Naya and Amber electrified the crowds and Naya impressed so much that they even had her join Mark and Amber on Lady is a Tramp during the live tour and that elevated the number so much.
Naya was a master of impressions and kept the cast and crew entertained by doing them during their 14-16 hour days on set. Chris said his absolute favorite was her impression of Kim Kardashian during jury duty.
This duet paved the way for the iconic River Deep Mountain High which also led Amber to having a talk with Brad Falchuk about how they were sleeping on Naya's talent and that led to her getting the lead for Valerie. Amber was an awesome friend to Naya.
You were an amazing talent Naya and we miss you so much.

@@handrian6019 She advocated hard with the producers and basically said that they were underutilizing her. And yeah, I absolutely love their friendship. I love Naya's connection with so much of the cast is amazing. So many have said that she has helped them to advocate for themselves and be stronger. I continually am impressed by her the more I find out about her

Naya was doing a mix of a Monica impression and her own singing voice, that's why she sounds like that. I think she mentioned that in her book.

They did this song because Naya would do a Monica impression so perfect. Naya said she did 50% Naya and 50% Monica

Brandi and Monica have not disappeared. They are big icons within the African American community and have done many projects since Boy is Mine.

Naya was doing her impression of the boy is mine. The creator of the show Ryan heard it and loved it so much he put it in the show. Naya wanted to go full impression and then they agreed to do a mixture of Nayas real voice and her impression. So that might be why it seems so different then everything else.

Fairly sure this was when Naya was still largely a side character in the show and they weren't 100% set on if she'd be showcased in vocal numbers a lot going forward (this was the only song she was showcased in during season 1, she was just backing vocals in a few others). I think she was given instructions to try and emulate Monica as close as feasible, because this song was a departure from her typical sound, and she was well known among the cast and crew for her many impressions. Probably drew from that when putting together this number. Though yeah, the different E is a bit off the mark from monica's, a bit more nasal for sure. Both have definitely developed a lot over the years, for sure!
She'd worked herself up from an named character without any lines (in the pilot), to a named character with dialogue(early season 1), to a named character who helped provide some vocals (late season 1, such as this number in episode 18), to a full-on series regular in season 2 after the showrunners fought for her to be brought in full time. It really paid off, because she was a standout throughout the whole series and was eventually given plenty of opportunities to shine.
yeah Naya basically only has solo parts in this and Like a Virgin in season 1, at least that I remember

Brandy and Monica may not be mainstream anymore but they're still both doing music. Brandy also has been doing TV shows, like Star and most recently Queens. Brandy also did a Cinderella medley video with Todrick Hall about a year ago to celebrate Cinderella going to Disney+. You should check that out

Sooo a little bit of back story, Naya was known on set for her impressions, they loved her impressions of Brandy or Monica I don't remember which So they wrote it into the screen and when she asked for clarification they said so a mix of her impression and Santana

Brandy currently has a daughter who is in college and singing. She is not married but is about to release a new album and had been on a few different tv shows. Monica is married with kids and both are amazing!! They had a Verzuz battle that was everything! Both have had amazing hits since the song!

Naya has talked about her Monica impression before. She would do it on set and it became such a thing that the showrunner had them sing this song. There was a podcast Naya was on with some of her fellow castmates and she was saying that she wanted to really put way more into her Monica impression, but they told her not to, so she toned it down a bit. Her Monica impression was a running joke with the cast and crew

Oh well... I think that is the first time I heard the actual full studio version and... why the hell they basically left out most of the banger parts in the show version, where really almost all the highlights (and that had many it seems like) were left out.
I mean sure, that song would have been too long then for that little number I guess...but still. Probably they were scared that - and I think fans already recognised it kinda - the power of Amber/Naya duets is just way to strong to handle it quietly and so that fans would have begged for more duets of them from the get-go of season 1 haha.

If you want to hear more from Brandy you should react to her show QUEENS on Abc she sings "Hear Me" "Until My Final Breath" and a beautiful rendition of "Wrecking Ball"
Neither disappeared and both were really big way before this song within the black community. This song just ended up crossing over to mainstream. But they're still very relevant within our community. We call Brandy The Vocal Bible, and we call Monica Goonica 😂. Those that get it, get it.

Nahhhhhh Brandy is still very much around, so is Monica but not that much mainstream. You should definitely WATCH "Lee Daniel's STAR" it's a damn good Musical show that is from the same creator as Empire and in the same Universe. Brandy is also a recurring Cast member in the begging and then turns to a Regular Cast Member.

Mercedes joined the Cheerios to be popular. Puckerman got his mohawk shaved, and lost his popularity - and Santana. To get popular, he dated Mercedes. Santana - even though she dumped Puck - still considered him hers and didn't like him with Mercedes. Puck thought he was hot sh*t cuz they were fighting over him.
The cutting of the video of the number is so confusing because it includes scenes from other parts of the episode and it doesn't line up with them singing. Like the fight happened after the number if I remember correctly and the dumpster was from the beginning of the episode.

If im not mistaken, she is from Texas. You can hear the Southern twang early on but it lessened towards the end .

Brandy aint disappeared. She's been doing T.V. and stuff. However, the reason you don't hear music like this anymore is because the landscape of music shifted. R&B is basically dead. It's all about hip-hop/rap music these days (for black people). People like Adele and Sam Smith are still able to put out music that could be deemed R&B-adjacent -- and they still become hits. Even in 2022, music is still very much racialized.
