I always doubt that a bit and thought why he should have done this, but now I know! ; ) In John Stevens biography about Ueshiba he wrote that he refuse to show any technique to Kyuso Mifune, because he was afraid that he steal his technique.
The more knowledgeable the master, the more they can teach to all students but one common denominator the greater the humility. To give the students some leeway to explore is really saying a lot-the student grow in the art.

@shiifu, Saito Sensei teaches Iwama ryu, but iwama ryu is olso part of aiki hombu organization, it is not excluded like some other teachings
but its still differnet and Saito Sensei got not well treated from the Aikikai
