He would certainly be an interesting alternative to Prince Everyman. Captain Canary’s main flaws was his inability to smack some good fashion respect military level obedience into his junior officers. Imagine what kind of horror it must have been to see this new generation of officers perform the same kind of blunders that cost the Galactic Empire it’s ancestry seat of power. Other fun interactions could include outsmarting his inexperienced command staff in scene. And himself learning the humility to accept good ideas from the new generation of officers.

Canady feels like the sequel Veers (guy in AT-AT in Empire Strikes Back). The few competent officers in their military that died too soon. Well to be fair, Disney neither confirmed nor denied Veers' death. Here, Canady's obviously dead.
I think if I remember correctly that in LEGENDS, Veers survived Hoth but was left crippled in a wheelchair and was demoted after the Empire's collapse to an instructor i the various Imperial factions that arose in the later years. Veers, Dash, Porkins, Biggs that the idea to thorw a small bit of coolness at you so that your mind can run with it and your imagination makes up it's own stories. You want the death star and the star destroyers and anything that is bigger and better cause in 1977 it was the biggest effects movie there ever as.

This character epitomises everything that's wrong with this movie he actually demonstrates how a competent leader would be and act in the face of the total illogical and moronic hux and just goes to show how very badly this movies plot is executed at the expense of common sense as literally stated by this character why Hux didn't lunch any fighters at all to cover the attack is insane as perfectly demonstrated in the scene the 2 insurgent class ships have over 200 Fighters between them but for the sake of poor story telling logic is Comatose on the back seat and in a strange twist this character actually becomes the in movie vocalisation the actual audience watching the movie.
Well firing at base makes more sense because it’s usually the rebellion ground bases have some Heavy Weaponary not their cruisers , also he might have learned from battle of Hoth

It wasn’t going anywhere, so they could’ve just destroyed it later. In addition, that base could’ve probably been searched for resistance information too, since the resistance probably wouldn’t have been able to purge everything before they left. Lastly, it makes no sense at all to not fire on the resistance cruiser that’s preparing to jump to hyperspace that has *ALL* of the resistance leadership on it. If Canady had ordered for the cruiser to be fired on first, he would have completely wiped out the resistance command structure, effectively ending the war, not to mention killing hundreds if not thousands of resistance soldiers. It’s incredibly stupid and disingenuous to suggest that firing on the base first was a smart decision at all.
This scene makes me wonder why Canady wasn’t the general of all First Order military; He’s a veteran and war hero with unmatched experience fighting rebels. Instead, the First Order is lead by a 30 year old boy who comes off as more of a nerdy, incompetent wannabe rather than an actual leader. Canady, with less than one minute of screen time, is a far more imposing and believable villain than Kylo Ren or Hux will ever be.
Cos Hux was the son of iirc Brendol Hux. A very high ranking imperial part of the original Last order plan to NYX the old Empire and the rebellion together and flee to unknown regions. So Armitage was probably fast tracked above other ex empire experience as they joined later and were considered with suspicion ti begin with, so blame cultism.
That Captain Canady doesn’t have a higher rank despite his competence is very realistic. You’d be surprised at how many times competent people have been passed over in real life.
Its kind of hard to say he was passed over, being the captain of the dreadnought would easily put him charge of effectively hundreds of people at any given time.
It might seem strange but... this character probably was one of the best things in this movie. I don't really like The Last Jedi (I don't hate it either), as there are way too many flaws in it. But the last look of this character, standing still even though he knows death is coming to him, but still choosing to stand firm and proud, looking at his fate without fear... I'm not sure we've seen this in any other Star Wars film. It's a shame we don't get to see him a bit more, he might have been a great character. But as it is, what we see isn't bad at all. Great job from the actor to build a character in just a few shots.

@@TheBrixHub If Rian did the whole trilogy, we'd have more illogical ships (B-17-based bombers that drop bombs 60 years after things like a seismic bomb in slave 1), or more interesting characters that would die after a minute or two. And here I won't even comment (when Rey and Ren are fighting the Praetorians, one of them just throws his weapon when Kylo attacks him, or Rey kicked three with one kick)
I can think of a few counter-arguments though. - General Hux literally said in the first seventeen seconds; "Why aren't you blasting that puny ship?!" - The First Order's well aware the base is already being evacuated, so it'll make little sense for there to still have active sentries. - The dreadnought seemed capable of attacking the Cruiser since its autocannons aimed for it next after the base. Though, from most people's point of view, these plotholes are just bad writing at fault, not in-universe specifically.
Ya gotta also consider who he is. Last bastion of true military discipline and competence. As such he’s a military man and respects the chain of command. He may well have wanted to do that just like he wanted to have all fighter squadrons scrambled immediately upon exiting lightspeed.

Canady used to be in the galactic empire so that's why he's more experienced and has every right to yell at his superior Hux (still one of my love to hate villains) and even respects paige's sacrifice as he's about to die. He's definetly like Veer and Piett in a way. this guy was a awesome minor antagonist since his ship killed many rebels and destroyed their base.
It might be the most divise Star Wars-film, but I'm brave enough to admit, that this guy is phenomenal. A real shame they didn't care to give him a mention in the Star Wars: Timelines-book.

If Canady had ordered for the cruiser to be fired on first, he would have completely wiped out the resistance command structure, effectively ending the war, not to mention killing hundreds if not thousands of resistance soldiers. It’s incredibly stupid and disingenuous to suggest that firing on the base first was a smart decision at all.
Unfortunate that hux forced him to target the base.
This scene makes me wonder why Canady wasn’t the general of all First Order military; He’s a veteran and war hero with unmatched experience fighting rebels. Instead, the First Order is lead by a 30 year old boy who comes off as more of a nerdy, incompetent wannabe rather than an actual leader. Canady, with less than one minute of screen time, is a far more imposing and believable villain than Kylo Ren or Hux will ever be.
Cos Hux was the son of iirc Brendol Hux. A very high ranking imperial part of the original Last order plan to NYX the old Empire and the rebellion together and flee to unknown regions. So Armitage was probably fast tracked above other ex empire experience as they joined later and were considered with suspicion ti begin with, so blame cultism.

That Captain Canady doesn’t have a higher rank despite his competence is very realistic. You’d be surprised at how many times competent people have been passed over in real life.
Its kind of hard to say he was passed over, being the captain of the dreadnought would easily put him charge of effectively hundreds of people at any given time.
It might seem strange but... this character probably was one of the best things in this movie.
I don't really like The Last Jedi (I don't hate it either), as there are way too many flaws in it. But the last look of this character, standing still even though he knows death is coming to him, but still choosing to stand firm and proud, looking at his fate without fear... I'm not sure we've seen this in any other Star Wars film. It's a shame we don't get to see him a bit more, he might have been a great character. But as it is, what we see isn't bad at all. Great job from the actor to build a character in just a few shots.

Captain Canady, the best thing in TLJ. Once he was gone I clicked stop on the movie and found something else to do. But that look of defiance on his face as death closed in him....It must have been the look on Mark Hamil's face when he read TLJ's script.

@@TheBrixHub If Rian did the whole trilogy, we'd have more illogical ships (B-17-based bombers that drop bombs 60 years after things like a seismic bomb in slave 1), or more interesting characters that would die after a minute or two. And here I won't even comment (when Rey and Ren are fighting the Praetorians, one of them just throws his weapon when Kylo attacks him, or Rey kicked three with one kick)

I can think of a few counter-arguments though.
- General Hux literally said in the first seventeen seconds; "Why aren't you blasting that puny ship?!"
- The First Order's well aware the base is already being evacuated, so it'll make little sense for there to still have active sentries.
- The dreadnought seemed capable of attacking the Cruiser since its autocannons aimed for it next after the base.
Though, from most people's point of view, these plotholes are just bad writing at fault, not in-universe specifically.
Bilbo Swaggins when the first order first arrived they believed that most of the resistance was still on the planet.
Ya gotta also consider who he is. Last bastion of true military discipline and competence. As such he’s a military man and respects the chain of command. He may well have wanted to do that just like he wanted to have all fighter squadrons scrambled immediately upon exiting lightspeed.
This guy, Peavy A.K.A. I believe he's toying with you sir and Allegiant General Pryde were the only bad guys who genuinely seemed to know what they were doing.
Honestly he was my favorite character in the whole movie cause he was the only first order commander to show any real competence
Canady used to be in the galactic empire so that's why he's more experienced and has every right to yell at his superior Hux (still one of my love to hate villains) and even respects paige's sacrifice as he's about to die. He's definetly like Veer and Piett in a way. this guy was a awesome minor antagonist since his ship killed many rebels and destroyed their base.

Just because this guy is the loudest voice in the room - The guy is barely a step above the stupidity and incompetance of the rest of the First Order command structure. They could have fired on the cruiser first THEN the base... not like the base is going anywhere and you have a fleet of ships to invade / blockade.
