Yes, I am sure it will make them VERY stiff...the glossy comes from what you seal it with. However, I don't use mine for food, which you probably already figured out!
If you have a smooth surface then it is smooth. Paverpol saturates the fabric you use it on. And you can paint it as you choose. I use shimmery paint on this all the time.
Such a beautiful work, those colours are a perfect match for this project.
