That should be a Nordmende television; the network board is also built into the large Nordmende SK2 table-top units. I had this experience with the smoke quite often.
Lucky camera capture! Mine gone up with camera off. One in lamp and one in HP test kit. That's a interesting conversion for sure and the power pretty high but guess it would be in a older set. Wonder if deguess is implemented. Thanks for another interesting video.
I had a similar experience with a Ferguson 10" colour portable found in the bin area of a campsite. The set worked great for about half an hour until the Rifa's let go big time! That was around 5 years ago, the set works fine, but I have not got round to changing the caps yet....
Ahh nothing like the smell of a RIFA in the morning! That was eventful! Had one go off in a 28" Salora (K-Chassis) set which was once our main living room set, but long since retired to lighter duties. The place stank for a week! I didn't know that about them failing o/c and turning benign - good to know as I haven't replaced it, either! xD
I have never seen any stepup conversion units for portables, very neat :-D I've always thought of portable tv's with 12 volts as a typical caravan addition (Back in the dark days of 12v only). Caravans were little things you took to the seaside, everyone has monster ones now lol. I have 3 Black&White 12 inch portables with a d.c socket as well as 240v. A "Classic" white set made in yugoslavia Dwektronics. (5 pin din for 12v) odd that. A Bush ranger 2 by rank radio international. And finally a Hitachi P-26 set. Why i keep them is unknown to me, i always liked portables :-D
interesting have never fitted one. with the RIFA caps i sold an exrental toshiba set set it up and was just about to leave the customers house when the cap let go needless to say that ended in a lost sale and a red face.
Must admit being new to this when the old magic smoke put in an appearance so early on in the proceedings I feared the worst, but so glad to hear the caps failure didn’t condemn the set.I’ll learn lol
I remember seeing this Ferguson Model in Radio Rentals they had two versions one was manual push button like this one in the video other was remote version . Made by Nordmende Spectra before TX 9 models came along
I had a Grundig Video 2000 VCR the rifa cap blew up in, but yee that Video 2000 machine worked perfectly after I unplugged it and plugged it back in. Nowdays I just remove the rifa cap from tech stuff I get since usually stuff will work without it got a Sanyo amp I removed the rifa from that amp works perfectly without a rifa
Well it’s just now happened to me and my Murphy t24.gave me a right start.house stinks of burnt up cap but the tv is still going strong Will have to replace it though lol
That set is not a genuine Thorn / Ferguson it is in fact a Nordmende ....or as we would say in the trade... a no can mende lol most engineers were frightened by them as they utilised thyristor line output
Amazing to see the brand new and still boxed battery converter,I have one for the TX90 but its not in its original box like yours.

Ojnoj seeing you do that convertion reminded me that the set was a Normende FV1 from Germany.

Hi Ojnoj Thorn were one of the only companys that sent you tea spill proof circuit diagrams.Did a few of those convertions in my time.
Love the lay out of the Thorn diagrams, they must of had excellent draughtsmen.
That was a laugh when the capacitor went up I think we have all been there. Lucky to get the action on camera.
At least the Rifas don't go bang!
I wondered if you ever saw my spectrum analyser video when that blew up it when with a right bang th-cam.com/video/3r79vc8ZlRw/w-d-xo.html
Smokin' hot video!

My first own Colour set I had in my bedroom before I left home looked a bit like this.
I seem to recall this model was manufactured by Nordmende or Saba and badged Ferguson or Baird etc...

Yes certainly odd to have a colour st in the 70's capable of 12v operation and I'm sure only te most affluent would have had it in there caravan.
interesting have never fitted one.
with the RIFA caps i sold an exrental toshiba set set it up and was just about to leave the customers house when the cap let go needless to say that ended in a lost sale and a red face.
That would certainly not help!
Lol. Love those rifa caps. Had one explode on me live as did allthegearnoidea. Love the smell!
The smell of a good workshop!
Where do you get the test card from, is it on tape or DVD haven't seen it for years.
27:02....." Red to Red, Black to Black....." Blew to bits...! 🤣....Very enjoyable video...
Thanks John, welcome aboard.
