  • In this video, I explain how a small oversight led to a dangerous situation. Fortunately, everything turned out fine, thanks to preparation!
    Enjoy!

    Perfect execution, instant nose down for airspeed. Great landing too!

    the best 'textbook' example of engine out recovery ive seen. as if done on purpose to show off your perfect landing skills.😉 your courage to post amid embarrassment just saved a life or two. it brought to my attention to build a hinged, clear safety box to cover my ignition\kill switches located way too close in front of me... an accident waiting to happen...cheers from toronto, canada

    How much clearance do you have from top of your helmet to the switches? I am just over 6 ft tall and there doesn't appear to be much space. Did you modify your seat installation?

    I moved my kill switch to the bar on my left side. Being overhead, it would have been hit accidentally. I'd be trying to do that, and maybe design an easier way to operate the flaps. Overhead cranking isn't very easy to do when you're trying to fly the plane. Just an idea. I'm always trying to tweak things for ergonomics. Anything to make you feel connected to the plane.

      Im swapping engine soon, the new engine is EFI and will have electric start and a keyed ignition. At that time, I am switching to a flap lever over the electric actuator. I may also spring load the flap lever, so I run a release cable and lever to my throttle lever. That way, I'll be able to quickly release the flaps on landing but also keep my hands on the flight controls.

    Them Gopros will get ya every time. Lol. Glad you got lucky and it happened over the runway. I fly footlaunch paramotors and I refused to get a helmet cam until I reached 100hrs flight time.

    Helmet cams are not fun to watch anyway. Chest mounted or fixed. Heads move so much, it's hard to watch. Glad it worked out!

    In this situation it's high drag and low glide performance helped. Didn't look like you gained much speed coming down.

    • @kidkhaos6427
      @kidkhaos6427  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it definitely worked out well. I had more than enough room to glide down and land safely. The most important thing is keeping up your airspeed.

    Your climb was fast and maximum altitude in shortest distance. Left you plenty of room for a safe landing. This would be an excellent thing to practice on regular basis. Then, when it happens for real, it's a nothingberg.

    • @kidkhaos6427
      @kidkhaos6427  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@kidkhaos6427 You could tell you had that situation under control and stated well ahead of the plane! I'm still debating going the UL route and skipping all the FAA testing for a sports license. All I want to do is stay around a local airport anyway. UL is so affordable. Not to mention, you can even put chutes in these things!

    Electric Start should be used on all Aircraft.

    • @kidkhaos6427
      @kidkhaos6427  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I would have landed even if I had electric start. Your first job if the engine dies is to fly the airplane. At that altitude, attempting to restart the engine and continue the takeoff would have been poor decision making.

      Also, flaps are a frequently misunderstood and over used accessory. On t/o they do NOT improve angle of climb. You’re best off not using flaps at all for takeoff unless in a soft filed situation or a short runway situation without obstacles.

    can't you crash start these engines? I would have imagined there is enough wind to push the prop around to make crash starting feasible?
