I'm guessing the excess rolling is because of all the weight carried high above the water line. The freeboard on those things is just huge, plus all the weight of the rigging. Hull shape may have contributed as well, but they were almost flat bottomed. A seasick machine if ever there was one, but such a beautiful beast to behold.
