Does anyone else think this should be the main screen of HLL when you log in?? Or at least something very similar, shows the detail and scale of what the player is going to join into.
its not actually 1:1, you would otherwise run alot longer :D More like 1:10 maybe scale wise. But they took the time to replicate it as close as possible. I love it ^^
I’m no expert when it comes to this but how is the scale not 1:1 if the maps shown line up with the real world counterpart? The roads line up with the real places. I know a lot of buildings were left out but I’m curious how you came to the 1:10 number?
this is so cool. you forget when you’re playing but all these battles actually happened. men fought and died on the exact terrain we play on. it’s absolutely nuts what those guys did. and in real life, there was no respawn.
Oh wow, dude, last week I was on Google Earth trying to find all the maps. I couldn't get Hurtgen Forest right, in the end I gave up. This video is exactly what I was looking for, amazing job!!! Thanks for creating it! :)
The Huergten map is not historical. The Kall Valley and the river crossing don't look like that, and Vossenack, Menstrenger Muhle, and Kommerscheidt are completely excluded. I'm not complaining: it's a great map to fight on, but it's the least historical of all the HLL maps.
This video does so many things at once: 1. Compares real life locations to the game maps (and lines the roads up) 2. Shows the attention to detail the level designers at Black Matter have put in 3. Provides a unique sense of the scale that occurs during a real war by flying over from one battle's location to another 4. Is just cool Great work.
That is really amazing! Several other WWII shooters have based maps pretty closely on actual geography but I haven't seen any others that have been that accurate to the topography. This is fantastic work and it was very enjoyable to watch.
This was very nice :) good music, smooth editing. And even if u have nothing to do with the game, it gives u a feeling of the whole size the attack had to be with this much land to cover.
Excellent work. As a note, for any future projects like this, I particularly liked how you re-faded in Google Earth at 4:40. I think on the other maps, you simply showed the location on Google Earth, then transposed the map. That final re-fade at 4:40 really solidified just how spot on the maps are though!
This is very good. Thank you! Constructively, i think the final pan out birds eye would benefit from again adding the tan overlay of the all maps as was done previously for just the Normandy maps. Also, i don't know if this is feasible, but orienting the maps so the objectives are readable instead of upside-down or sideways. Good job! Really nice video.
Why am I only getting the same maps every time it’s driving me fucking mental. After a week of playing and hours trying to load into games with maps I’ve never played before I seem to only get carentan, El Alamein, driel and saint marie du mont and occasionally Kursk
I didn't realise Purple HEart Lane and Carentan maps actually overlapped, I though PHL was another km down the road or so. Does the geometry match up in both ingame maps? I'd like to see a comparison.
You'll find PHL has Dead Mans Corner as an objective, however the real Dead Mans Corner is about a 1k or 2 up the road in fact it the building on the rear left at 1:52 triangular in shape at the junction
yea that battle occurred at a time when the Germans flooded the entire area so they could retreat and set up a defense. That's why the map is all flooded. They had to fight to take four bridges that led to Carentan.
It appears to be due to the tides - if you look at the satellite image before the map is overlaid you can see that one section has deeper water and less beach and that the change is sudden - probably due to the imagery being captured at different times. Ocean levels may have risen in the last 75 years but likely not enough to account for that difference.
St Marie Du Mont doesn't look right to me. The town is in the South East part of the map on HLL. I'm guessing they altered it to make it playable. Am I going crazy here?
@@SenorCrazylegs Yes. The first iteration of that map was completely different. It is rotated and the content hugely adapted. This video shows the old map. It is a shame the old map is gone, was one of my favorites back in the day. Though the new one is great too.
super nice video! You dont have these overlays as files, do you? I will travel to Normandie next week and want to visit the HLL Map Locations. It would be super nice to have the Google Map with the HLL Map Overlay. Greetings
Real world maps have height lines. Lines that look kindof like small roads but actually indicate every 10 or 100 m of height increase. Im not sure if HLL has them.
What software did you use, or how did you implement this? I'm a junior developer and I'm really interested in making websites that describe the action of battles interactively, but I'm not sure how to make makes that are zoomable/ how you overlay the HLL maps on Google Earth.
download google earth pro and click add image, if you look up how to do it once you do it for 1 its pretty easy for the rest of them, as for the camera motions im not sure.

Yeah, I would love the game to tie into the true history connected to it a little more.
This is a great idea.
That would be awesome!
I rather wish that they will one day add a "Campaign" mode ....Simmilar to the ones Red Orchestra 2 has for example...would be so fun
When you enter a map, a short cutscene like this would be awesome. Very nice idea! :)
Running across huge maps can get to be a pain in the tail sometimes, but man it's so impressive that they built 1:1 recreations of these battlefields.

Already done this myself in maps, but seeing it perfectly presented here on google earth is truly amazing
You should make a video about it and show us the areas in game.

Guess I never realized how accurate the levels are. Makes me enjoy it that much more.
Great job! Love to see you update this in the future map releases for Eastern Front as well!
when is that planned ? 2021 ?
@@oddballsok seems so, yes. Fair assumption

This is what I love about this game, the scale of the maps...
Literally the coolest video for HLL ever done. My hat is off to you sir!
I had no idea that purple heart lane had overlap with carentan. I have to look closer at those two maps now
This is more than a tour. This is art.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
3 years after it still a G R E A T video.

The accuracy is the reason i stuck to this game.
This is what makes this game amazing
Amazing work! Really well done. I look forward to more of these as more maps are added, especially more theatres.
I hope they will make a hundred more maps to play on
Wow what a great work congratulations
Mind blown! Well done production here
Amazing work!
Amazing and very emotional tour

At 1:08 it looks like the coastline has moved backwards. Is this natural land/sea change, or is the HLL map distorted slightly? Great video!

C'est juste que l'image satellite a été prise à marée haute et que le débarquement s'est passé à marée montante

Is Sainte-Marie-du-Mont Reversed in the game?
In the video the old version of the map is used

It would be really cool if the maps had some sort of indication for height in game (or have they?
)
Real world maps have height lines. Lines that look kindof like small roads but actually indicate every 10 or 100 m of height increase.
Im not sure if HLL has them.
