I once had a scene in drama class where I was supposed to be super annoyed at my acting partner after they released a balloon they had been blowing up during the scene and we had to just sit there and pause staring at each other as the audience laughed and it was so hard to keep a straight face! 😂
I watched Hamilton this summer and the king decided every so often to stare at one person specifically in the front row and then they aggressively said their line until they stopped looking at them it was hillarious
Yes! I saw Hamilton on Broadway a couple of years ago now and the most memorable part of that night was that the king chose my mom next to me to make the most intense eye contact with ALL night. Every time he would come out for one of his songs he would zero in on her and wink and make all these faces and I absolutely couldn't believe it. Was laughing so hard, the coolest crowd interaction ever! Still can't believe it happened.
We legit have to do this in our production of mean girls during til someone gets hurt and we’re all dancing so we freeze in stupid poses and laugh at each other until we get in trouble😭
I remember doing a show where we had to freeze for two minutes while the soloist kept going on. Once I was in a really awkward position and was face to face with another actor. Getting cramps and trying to hold in your laugh at the same time is a unique experience :D
I was Heather Duke, but I was in the bathroom when we were meant to go on stage and I remember one time I was pulling out a prop, I had no idea fight for me was on yet so I had to pause, and then go in slow motion across the stage..
last year at school, we got hanging mics in addition to wires (picks up ensemble and background well) and it was SO AWFUL bc we had to be 100% silent backstage (lol like that’d ever happen) and we couldn’t joke around like this.
I did a show a few years back in school and at one point I had to freeze and stare at this guy with “fear in my eyes” but one time he accidentally stepped to close and his elbow hit my face two seconds before the freeze I had to avoid all eye contact to not laugh and so did he
I’m currently in High School Musical and as a cheerleader, we don’t have time to leave the stage after the opening scene without it looking wrong so for The Start of Something New we all have to freeze for like half the song, and my friend decided to freeze while staring into my soul yesterday at rehearsal and it took everything in both of us not to laugh💀💀💀
One of my favorite theatre memories was from Matilda, and during quite, I had a kid BY THEIR EAR, and we were just staring each other down the entire song, trying not to laugh
I've had numerous times when I've been in the audience, literally in awe at the stage and people on it. Not realise I was staring at only a few actors, both of us realising, and awkwardly acknowledging it. Never again.
Bro i was in theater club in highschool (not america, very unprofessional but so fun), and my role was to act as if i have gotten extremely drunk! It was so hard to act drunk when my 16 year old self never was and not burst out laughing when the audience clearly did! I could see my best friend (also on stage) bitung his togue and holding back a smile while waiting dor the laughter to die down so he could talk again! 😂
Fr like i am a knight in my play and I have a mask on with little holes for the eyes so I could just stare at the audience while I’m delivering my lines so fun
Im in a professional show rn and there was this part they had to cut bc everyone kept laughing at it but we had to freeze when some ppl are trying to break into the castle but almost every rehearsal someone would freeze looking at someone and break. i did it with the 10 year old and he made me lose it so much 😂
Bro the freezing is so me on stage during my dance comps😭✋🏻 (For those who don’t understand, my team is deducted points if we: touch our hair/clothes, don’t take glasses or jewelry off, or are lip syncing/chewing gum/ not standing still on stage)
I am in Music man and for Iowa Stuborn we have to freeze while the mayor is like putting the pool table were it needs to go and a bunch of boys run across the stage and it is so hard not to smile not to mention we have to look at the audience and I am not behind anyone.
In Bye Bye Birdie during Telephone Hour we froze everytime Harvey Johnson was singing (as well as one of the other parts) and it was so hard not to show a reaction to his voice cracks and whatnot
I was in beauty and the beast this summer and for the song bell it was a ton of freezing and unfreezing, me and my friend decided to try to freeze as me giving her a sausage, we naturally looked at each other and were literally just trying so hard to not crack up for like a minute, we learned to never make eye contact from there 😭
I just saw a production of Hairspray (fantastic, btw!) and TOTALLY caught a couple of the performers either slyly mentioning stuff to each other in passing, or giving each other the LOOK that caries an entire discussion at a glance. Us medical types do the exact same thing. You get good at reading it after a while. 😂
In my 8th grade production of Newsies, there was this scene we had to freeze onstage, and every time we did for the performance, production was a minute or two late, and I’d laugh as Warden Snyder.
I was in the top row of a narrow amphitheater and noticed Scrooge looking at me during a monologue, and it made me feel very uncomfy so I kind of just instinctively stared him down back and I noticed his gaze shift slightly to my right after that 😆
One time in a very very amateur (HS) production of George M., we all had a freeze moment when the lead started singing "Give My Regards to Broadway," and I prevented myself from corpsing by freezing in a mimed sneeze. Eyes shut, hands over face, face angled down at the stage...the first night I made five other people break though.
I had a crush on an actor in a play once and I just stared at them the entire time. They did the same to me, I thought I was falling in love but maybe I was just delulu lemons 😅
I had a scene in a play right at the beginning where i had to stare someone down while spouting lines. Thankfully as soon as the scene ended, my character has a full-speed exit. The entire run, every single show, i always BARELY made it to the end of the scene.
I am no broadway level actress but I did musicals as a hobby for a while and in one play, in one scene/song I had to stand behind a bed with the dead mom of the mc on the bed but the girl that played the mom kept making silly faces at us (I stood there with 2 other people) and it was so hard to play sad😭😭
I was in a production of A Christmas Carol (not broadway obvs. but it was theatre) and 5 of us had to freeze at the end in the middle of passing a giant turkey prop between us (for a little time stop monologue thing) and we COULD NOT stop laughing every single time
I remember having to freeze as Cinderella in into the woods and in rehearsal the step mother and I would end up freezing looking each other right in the eye, and I would break every time. I had to be so careful not to look her right in the eye when actually performing especially since our stage was so close to the front row and I was on the ground right up front
I had to freeze when I recently played Gretchen Wieners in Mean Girls a couple of times. But someone gets hurt was literally my END. The director had me (gretchen) flirting with another kid (Jason, I think the character in that scene was. I had to do a tango earlier with him, and that was fun lmao) when the beginning of SGH started, and we all had to freeze. We had to glare at eachother and it was so awkward every time. We both ended up looking past each other's heads bc that way we wouldn't laugh. THEN the choreographer had Regina come and tap my head and I had to change positions with my leg up on the stool I was leaning on (IN HEELS BY THE WAY) AND "PLAY" WITH THE KIDS HAIR. I'm not even kidding when I say that I just put my hand on his head. There was another time when the guy playing Aaron had a funny looking freezed pose during Stupid With Love and we were all laughing so hard at the pose, and because he was facing the wings, he had to try and not laugh at us laughing. Honestly freezing in shows SUCKS cuz you have to try and stay still and also not laugh if something ridiculous happens with the freeze.
One of the tech jobs I work had a mic setup were when the mics were off they were just not through the sound system, but we could still hear what people were saying in the booth, no matter how many times we reminded the actors of this they kept forgetting, and I heard some interesting things to say the least
I was in a highschool production of into the woods, and i had we had a disaster with milky white, causing her to fall apart on stage right before the curtain opened at top. the first number is has SO much freezing. I played jack, and one of my best friends, who was puppeting milky white, had to run to step in and pretend to be a cow. which was full of incredibly uncomfortable eye contact and petting. I was loosing my shit throughout the entire first 13 minutes of the show. i never felt so relieved to get off stage.
In a Christmas story 2 actors had to be on stage behind the house set to do the dog puppets and every show when the mom opened the door they tried to get her to break
lmfao AMAZING! I've had so many moments where we try to make each other laugh. I remember the orchestra messed up and started playing the wrong part before getting back on track and we were all in our positions waiting until they got back to the right part to get back to the choreography. So we were all like what is going on while giggling. The stare got me. Hope Karen felt it in her soul
When I was 13 (16 now) I was in a junior version of Matilda, I was ensemble as a kid in both “The Smell of Rebellion” and “Quiet” was right after that, and everyone except Matilda was frozen while she sang Quiet. We had to do different exercises for Smell of Rebellion, so we were all sweaty and then had to be frozen, and it was hard to keep a straight face lmao
I do plays in a community theater and this is so accurate lol. The worst was when I had to freeze while slow dancing with one of the other actors who I never spoke to even once before this 😢😅
😂😂Last musical I was in, I was the "bad guy." After the show, when we did a little meet and greet with the audience, most were very shocked I wasn't really that mean. Guess it's really a compliment though. 😂
I did freeze frames. One of the ones i remember was guys and does and it was like a quarter of the song. Or it pasted like a bit. I was like ok can I move. The oens where they don't blink are professional . I blink cause I can't hold it that long.
Omg now I hope the actors at shows I see don’t think I’m glaring at them. I just look intense when I’m focusing on the performance sometimes even when I’m really enjoying it😭
accurately knowing what seat the lady is in😂
This is me fr
Hi
poor josh 😂
The freeze during the song “Fight For Me” in Heathers always shocks me. How does Kurt manage to hold his legs up that long?!
lol I played kurt and trust me it was NOT FUN. hurt like a bitch but I got stronger legs for sure

This is so true!! I am an actor as well so I understand having to hold in your laugh while frozen!
@P4RTY_P01S1NI have had that happen to me before!!!!
I once had a scene in drama class where I was supposed to be super annoyed at my acting partner after they released a balloon they had been blowing up during the scene and we had to just sit there and pause staring at each other as the audience laughed and it was so hard to keep a straight face! 😂
@@jayde_is_me omg! That must have been so hard to keep a straight face!😂
Omg yes!
Especially when your friend is off stage and you can see them making faces at you
Wait, the actors can see when you're looking at them? ohhhh god oh no
Yeah. it’s surprising, but yeah
Oh yeah. I actively look around the audience for people I might know.
Yeah I’m so surprised by this!! I performed in high school theatre and I’ve never been able to make out the audience with this level of detail
That's so scary.. I can never see the audience when I'm on stage. Maybe a few people in front
My friends and I love to make fun of the ppl watching us 😭😭😭
I watched Hamilton this summer and the king decided every so often to stare at one person specifically in the front row and then they aggressively said their line until they stopped looking at them it was hillarious
I NEED TO DO THAT IN MY NEXT SHOW
I'm doing that in my next show whatever it is idc
Update: I am Fester in the Addams Family bro that makes it even more funny

Never been on Broadway but “why would you freeze staring directly at me” is too relatable

I had to avoid all eye contact to not laugh and so did he
For Spongebob the Musical I got way too into the freezes and our Spongebob came up to me and called me “No-Blinks”
Josh's mom 😭 ofc it makes sense now
“Why is that KAREN in the second row STARING me down. No, like actual death glare”
We did hairspray for our school play last year (bit weird ik) and the music brings back bad memories 💀
I had to look serious in a role and when I was on stage and I had to be still I held my laughter in for a long time
"I'm gonna stare right back at her. 👁👁 I CAN HEAR THE BELL-"
That is so something I would do
the only thing that makes this unbelievable is the fact that anyone could possibly see the audience with lights on
The amount of times that I’ve played a mean character and a mom started giving me a death glare and I stared at her for the entire show is crazy
That'd be terrifying 😭
I can't get over that absolute DEATH glare at the end! 😂😂
Could you do the big fun dance? Like the part where the jocks go
