Just remember that reels are most often made to get you a job. Many times the people that hire people might not have the strongest imagination, and if they don't see stuff in the reel they can instantly relate to, the job might end up with another that have made just the kinds of animations the company is looking for.
I totally agree! I love @Ben Marriott, but if you observe closely, he's always asking the "non artsy", plain boring stuff to be edited out. The thing is, many (or most) of the times, your client is NOT going to be a designer / lead animator but a "business-y" client. They would totally appreciate these segments over the artsy stuff.
hey! three years later, but I was #2 on this list (even though he didn’t post my website and credited the wrong animator 😅) but i appreciate this opinion!
i guess you need to taylor your reel to what you want to do, but there is definitely a blurry line on what might be considered universally sound vs what many be considered clever but maybe at expense of versatility.
still the attention, critiques and love he gave my (now updated) reel was more than golden, i’m thankful for both his words and y’all’s
Your thumbnail are like terrifying, looks like the Gordon Ramsay of motion and then in the video you are like "yeaaahhhhhh this is cooool"
Haha, thb you guys are all just too lovely to be treated ruthlessly!
@@BenMarriott You're a good person. Thanks for sharing all this knowledge.
Wow I can't I got noticed by my favorite youtuber!! ;)
Haha jokes aside, thank you so much for your critiques ben, I will absolutely apply them to my reel and keep it short and sweet, let's see if this lands me a nice internship before the year ends!
Thanks again, this means a lot ♥
Haha, you're so welcome! You'll have absolutely no problem at all!
This series motivates me to create a showreel! Pretty sure im gonna cry under my bed after honest review
That's amazing to read! haha, as long as you're trimming down that reel under the bed I'm satisfied.
Kanka selam yaptıgın calısmalara bakabilir miyim merak ettim
This is an old video but I just wanted to say I've binged every review you've made and it's been incredibly helpful in helping me personally figure out what needs to be changed in my own reel and having a keener eye for what should be in a motion reel. As a self taught motion designer, your videos have been invaluable! Thanks so much for the amazing content!
you say "so brutal" when you're giving constructive and kind feedback lol
I am a little starstruck tbh. Thank you so much sir for your amazing comments on my reel, I will definitely follow the advice you gave me. An even bigger thank you to as well, for being so nice and personable, I'm still very new to the game so it was so welcoming to hear your warm comments among all these beautiful reels you've been reviewing.
This is amaaazinggg so glad i clicked on this. Despite being a beginner into motion design! These kinds of videos i so do look forward to~
Thank YOU so much for clicking on this! :D Glad you enjoyed it :)
These are really helpful to watch. Thanks for doing another round Ben! Keep em' coming!
I’m totally addicted. Please post more showreel review soon, it’s a great way to see good works and learn about time and editing. Cheers!
It takes a person who really appreciates animation to critique already amazing reels. I would be so thankful for the honest critiques.
Thanks Ben for making this series. I love to see everyone’s work and see how everyone’s style is so different. As a current student I’m learning so much on this channel. Much love from Boston! ✌🏾
I like what you're doing here, this type of feedback is so important for every type of motion designer at any level of skill. Keep the reviews going.
Awesome works once again, I love having your feeedback on these animations, you always point out insightful things. Kudos 👏
Thanks Adrien! I'm really excited to do more. I find these so fun to make.
@@BenMarriott I know you just want to make more judgment photos for your thumbnails but that's ok
This series are Golden, Ben! Please keep it up, you're amazing.
“We’re not worthy, we’re not worthy!”
Schwing?
Ben Marriott that feel when they get the reference. Is there a better feel?
I'm new to the whole editing scene however, i must say your critiques are spot on and done with truth. Keep doing this pls
these type of videos inspire me so much, thank youuu
Very helpful tips Ben, great work by all who submitted too!
The first one and second one blew my mind
We need more reel reviews
I love your channel!
I started studying after effects a month ago but maybe one day I’ll send you a cool video like the one you’re analyzing!
You’re inspiring me to trim my own showreel down to 40 seconds. Also, nice works you’re showing there!
This is amazing Ben, thanks a lot!
i love this...keep doing this ben....this helps to analyse works
critically
Love your preview expressions, really funny
These are great to watch! and seeing how you review them. Makes me think of things to do for my own reel.
I'm living for this reviews. They are incredibly helpful.
This is really useful Ben. Honestly, keep going, please! I like you're more brutal this time around but that's really helpful for people like me. Also, there's some great pointers of what does work as well as what doesn't.
More! (but also please keep doing tutorials!)
Thank you :) Now I get an idea of how to create my first showreel
More of these videos please!

Thank you! I have so much fun making these :D
Ahhh loving these reel reviews! Very useful tips and pointers indeed! Some good insight taken from your first one too. Though, none seemed to be as bad as your thumbnail made it seem haha
Ben: found some mistakes
Me: THATS PERFECT!
Incredibly informative!
Thanks so much! :D Glad you found it useful
Could definitely use pointers on mine before I create my new reel
Love you, Ben
Love the series Ben!
I am starting my journey in motion design and i wsnns see more!
Awesome video, just submitted mine :)
Yes. Keep doing this.
Really like this stuff so much!!! More more more please!! Get others you know to help critique work. Currently working on my Reel so maybe soon you’ll see it...
Thats aweomse to hear! :D Good luck with your reel. I know they can be really hard to put together.
@@BenMarriott Thanks man, so hard but aiming to be short and punchy! Still feels a bit empty so making use of lockdown to work on more personal work I really like...
Love this content!
I'm at that stage where I gotta make my demo reel and I. AM. TERRIFIED! I also just want to put what I can do based on what I learned...so gonna just...look ☺️
Make more !!!! It is sooooo cool 😎!!!
Yey! Love it!
Hi Ben, this video is amazing and so helpful, thank you so much!
I'd like to ask you a question about reels.
How can we do our first reel in an effective manner in order to find clients when we have few things (practically nothing) to show?
Is it okay to create some new projects from scratch especially for our first reel?
And I know it sounds maybe crazy but if I give myself 1 month to build a new reel, what will be the best method to create something strong?
Thanks in advance for your advice and thanks a lot for your channel, your work is so awesome
Question: If we submitted a reel via the form last time, should we re-submit it this time?
Comment: I think you've got the optimal format for reel review where you and viewer watch it, think our own thoughts, then hear your as we go back through it. Would love for this to be a regular thing if you've got time. It builds a feeling of community and involvement with your audience and also highlights some animators I hadn't heard of before. You could even record 3 or 4 episodes in one sitting. Just checked, and it looks like you may have done this since you're wearing the same shirt from the previous reel review. Very smart way to produce content.
Thanks mate! No need to resubmit :D I'll pull from the same pool.
That's great to hear. That's exactly what I did. Don't tell anyone, but I've worn the same shirt in every video I appear in so I don't have to think about continuity. haha
U were too critical. Greg did a awesome work. Great showreel.
This is really great to hear
Thanks for this, and yeah, I agree with the comment below!
Pretty sure the second reel is by Matt Wolak, not Ramos. Saw friends in the reel, so I had to look it up.
hey ben i was going to buy your course because your skills are insane but I was wondering if it was way to intermediate for me I am familiar with AEs layout and have been working in it for several months but my level is not good at all i just know after effect
Hi Irakli! I think it might be a bit overwhelming for having just started a few months ago. With some more time (A year or so) you'll get a lot more out of it. It'll always be there, so there's no missing out. :)
Great stuff! And great critique. Personal pet peeve... I wish folks would stick with the convention of writing a web site name, (domain.com) rather than throwing in the superfluous "www."
I find myself trying to hold on to the little confidence I have left, I managed to seccure my first freelance contract, I love using After Effects but when I see other peoples showreels my confidence sinks.
Hey, mate!
I love your work. I want your advice and opinion. I don't actually do motion design, I'm a photomanipulator, but generally, when someone critiques my work or points to something not wel;l done in my work, I always take that straight into my ego. I have no idea why. I just feel ashamed when someone critiques my work, so, how can I overcome that?
Thanks man! I still feel a little sting when I get some critique, usually, when I know they're right. I'm become much MUCH better at it over the years though. The most important thing is separating yourself from your work. They're not criticizing you, they're trying to get the best result. And we should be too right? It can feel like a personal attack sometimes, but it almost never is.
Thank you GOD for making us creative creatures so we can produce and enjoy all this beauty.
Talking about square projects - Is it good idea to create a reel in square format? I'm in process of creating a new reel and I'm leaning towards making it Square. Would that put off clients to hire me?
@ben Marriott which mic currently you are using?
Wow that intro remind me about adventure time
I'm confused. The 2nd reel is from Matthew Wolak but in the description is says Matt Ramos. Was that a mistake? I'm trying to recreate some of his work for practice and I want to make sure I credit the right person.
hey! two years later and i am replying, yes he did accidentally put the wrong motion designer in the link, but it’s all good!! the reception he gave me was more than golden!!
Hi man, could you give a review of the 10 best motion designers, the author of the effect that works now can be a link to their TH-cam channels ? And thx fo you video 🙃🙃📍😀
Please do an adobe illustrator tutorial
Ooh, a connaisseur of Ernst Häckel!
Hi ben 😊
Could you make a tutorial to do this style of animation : 7:56 Photo and Motion Design mix, this also make me think of Dan Mace style of scrap booking animation.
thanks 🙂
edit : it's true you already did the avocado tutorial but I mean the process of putting picture into After and integrate Motion and "Reel elements"
I'm new to your channel.
Can you tell what softwares they're using?
My only wish is to make a decent reel and see it in one of your videos. #soon.
It doesn't need to be good at all, please don't feel pressured! You could use a fake name if you want, the point of this series is to give feedbacks from my perspective, not to judge anyone or anything you make :)
What software is used for motion graphics?
am I early enough for ben to heart my comment?
You bet you are! :D Thanks for being part of the early crew
HI Ben PLease do a online yourtube course on UI animations for websites please..
who creates your music on an intro bro?
View 1, Comment 1!
Congrats! :D Brilliant effort
Thank you! In my haste, I forgot to mention how utterly brilliant your videos are. From a lowly designer and amateur illustrator, I now aspire to add animation to my work. Thank you, Ben Marriott!
Could you do a portfolio/website review too?!? Or a "top 10" for a portfolio website? Also, you need a Patreon! I would definitely give you my money! :)
Where do ya’ll get good reel music for free?
I can't unsee how much you look like David Dobrik
Anyone know the song used in the first reel
shazam says its bar breaker by Prof/ Aeasop ??? Instrumental version th-cam.com/video/-IU4332RF70/w-d-xo.html
Hi Ben, I love these series, I would like you to make a honest review on my showreel. I'm a freelance motion & graphic designer from Israel.
Never knew Amy Adams have After Effects Channel
I could spend hours watching Ben reviewing ShowReels...
plz react to Ishin Motion Graphic because he is the King of Motion . you can find him on yt just search Ishin he is from Japan
6:48 putting a shot like that into a show reel makes me think the guy hasn't got a clue about good design... what was he thinking? Awful..
Why isn't it good?
Can u make a intro for me i dont know how
;)
Pin me please📌
