Just read the book. So sorry for all you went through; that was all terrible! (and then the family claims to be the 'victims'! Who's condemning and disowning who?)
Also recently read a FOTF article from an ex-gay author who focuses on “scientific findings” that they interpret as 'proving' homosexuality is mostly environmental rather than inborn.
So it suddenly dawned on me: if that's true, then it's implicating Amber's family and the whole FOTF background, and they obviously can't own that! Their whole argument is that it's the environment, but the “environment” in her case was THEM! That's why they were so hung up on “how it looks” to others, because in their view, it would be a indictment of them! And they've already taken such pains as to rule out other factors such as it being inborn! So all that leaves is themselves, to blame!
In their assumptions, when it comes to the 'ungodly' families and culture, of course, THEIR 'environment' will produce gays, but that just isn't supposed to ever happen to US (“the 'godly'”). So they are caught in a serious double bind, and that's why all they could do is just shut her out!
