Gotta say, One More Multiverse was by far the most interesting VTT you showed here. I think it's really hard to build something that's generally more compelling than Roll20, Foundry, or FGU. But that pixel art aesthetic could be really compelling for the right type of game. This is the same reason that Alchemy stands out as well.
Totally agree! Going through so many VTTs I saw many that were in the same space as Roll20 and Foundry so it was nice seeing some really interesting ones with their own strong vision going
@@DiceAndEasy The community for Foundry is tremendous. I also went from Roll20 to Foundry two years ago. I found that moving away from D&D to Pathfinder and AlienRPG really good and optimized for Foundry nicely. I agree with you also that The Forge is the way to go. Thank you for your videos!
I am surprised you did not rate Fantasy Grounds higher. I have used a couple of VTTs like Foundry, Roll 20, FGC, FGU, and brief tests with others, and nothing compares to FGU in my opinion. Obviously it is quite pricy, but without a subscription cost I have had my money worth it! It is robust, has many QoL features, and great for setting up various custom effects, and have some mods as well.
I did try it during my testing phase but I found it to be incredibly hard to learn even the basics of the software though I do understand that it is very versarile and robust once you do learn it. The price was also another issue for me.
FoundryVTT is definitely the way to go imo. By itself it's all the VTT I could ever ask for, but with the focusing on community plugins and modding, it's literally perfect.
What did I just witness? At the moment you said "hit those subscribe and like buttons down there" the subscribe button was enveloped in a rainbow colored aura. That is the first time I have seen it and it was cool. Subbing! Thanks for the video. Oh, and I hit the like as well. 😁
Great list! For Pathfinder 2 specifically, the support for official adventures are impressive in Foundry. They don't have many yet but the one there are of very high quality.
For me Foundry is definitely the best. The sheer amount of accessibility and customization options, with hundreds of actively developed modules and systems (not to mention official D&D 5e support) is just an unbeatable combo. OMM looks really interesting as well, but Roll20 didnt age well and is often a pain to manage.
Honestly Foundry wins out for me for several reasons, no monthly cost as I can self host or just use an Oracle server, TONS of mods thanks to it being open source for moders means it gets every bell and whistle I could ever ask for including those I didn’t even know I wanted till I saw them.
@@DiceAndEasy Yeah harsh learning curve (especially since I first learned to self host then eventually set up an Oracle server to avoid monthly fees all while having 0 coding knowledge) but after I got over that saving monthly costs from roll20 + having so much more I can do is worth it.
I think it's also worth mentioning Tabletop Simulator. There are a bunch of dungeon tiles models, and you can make billboarded minis using in-game tools, orbuy models from hero forge to import your own 3d minis. It's not purpose built for ttrpgs, but it can support them very well if you spend some time getting familiar.
I did try it out in my research and it is s viable option. However it requires a lot of setting up and prep, and it is quite complex for playes to use, hence why it’s not in this video.
For me Fantasy Grounds Unity is by far the best VTT on the market. For only 50$ it offers all the versatility Foundry offers, all of the official adventures for d&d and is on par with roll20 for most of the commercial rulesets. My second choice is Foundry, harder to use and a pain in the a** to choose and maintain all the extensions needed to be on par with FGU, but a great and helpful community. I use it when there is no ruleset for FGU, like for the Blade Runner RPG. But most of the time FGU get the commercial ruleset with all the adventures for it: ad&d, Pathfinder, Call of Cthulhu, most of Modiphius rulesets, Savage Worlds, World of Darkness, most of Free League... The community around FGU is also awesome and very helpful. So, for me, it is FGU and Foundry ftw.
Maptool is my favorite by far. Gives me so much more control over what gets automated with scripting, plus it's hosted on my own server and open source. Foundry looks really solid though.
Foundry also has purchasable full adventure paths for Pathfinder now too. They are super complete with all the content plus extras for a VTT like soundtracks. I’ve been using Foundry for a year or so now. It was a learning curve for sure but I recently tried Roll20 which by comparison is sooo painful to use. Foundry does so much of the heavy lifting for players and DMs.
Oh that’s great! I’m not familiar with Pathfinder side of things (though I do want to learn it) so it’s good to hear that they are officially supporting Foundry!
Thanks for the video Mike, just one tip: you have to learn how to better use the teleprompt. Or just memorize your lines. It looks a bit awkward when your eyes are going left and right like a cat watching a laser pointer
This is seriously the video I needed. I started making maps with Inkarnate, as they have a really good system with cool assets (figured I'd pay for a month and get everything done I needed to in that time) but then after that was totally lost. I was to the point where I was looking at using RPG Maker MV (with a fog of war and co-op plugin) because the amount of information out there was just so overwhelming. All I needed was a digital map system to use for a game that's taking place in person (and the fog of war/darkness aspect would be really nice too for the final dungeon).
@@DiceAndEasy Going to try OMM, but if that doesn't quite work because it's IRL then I have OwlBear Rodeo open too, but that one almost seems more complicated 😅. I imported my Inkarnate map into OBR, but I can't figure out how to move it, or anything. Might have to look up a tutorial. If I could just figure out how to get the plugins on RPG Maker to work right, I could be onto something. Honestly am just trying to find a simple map thing I can put on my windows laptop (for free) and connect to the TV so my maps and tokens are up there, and can be moved with the mouse. Don't need much else for now.
I was a Foundry guy moved to roll20, I quit FVTT after each Foundry update my officially purchased modules would break and took weeks to fix if ever. If your playing anything beside DnD or Pathfinder Foundry stinks for support since its all user created.

I appreciate the look at all these vtts! It helped pushed me to get Foundry for it's versatility and even with the learning curve, I'm enjoying it a lot. Alchemy sounds amazing to use for something like the Sea of Thieves ttrpg, which and so gotta check that out now.
Great to hear that my video was useful for you! And welcome to the Foundry crew! I absolutely love the VTT! Alchemy is fantastic for less crunchy games! They are currently in the process of adding official support to a bunch of game systems!

Best VTT is foundry. Not only is it better than its direct competitors (Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds) it can also literally simulate all the others with no issue. And if you know some coding, you can literally make a mod to have it do anything you want. And it’s a one time purchase and you can host it directly from your pc if you want. Like I can understand your points with owl bear rodeo and alchemy, you can literally run foundry VTT the same exact way. So why settle for an inferior product?
I've sworn by foundry for years but lately, they've been causing me a lot of problems. A recent update basically now requires port forewarding (which windows REALLY doesn't like you doing) which has caused me no end of problems. Really feeling like they're getting into that habit of fixing what ain't broke and just causing problems.
Thanks for the recs! Foundry & Alchemy are on my to-learn-list now. I use a -lot- of songs on my campaigns (for environments, npcs, travel, shops, role play mood changes, etc) On your experience which VTT would be a good pick that lets me select songs quickly without lag or glitches? Tbh if I could have a DJ music table for VTTs I'd set it up. That's how much i prepare that aspect of my campaigns😅Could Foundry allow me to program something like that?
You're welcome! I would say for your music needs, Foundry is better suited. The music system in Alchemy currently is very basic. You can set a background track and combat track per map, and ambient tracks for both of those as well but that's it. Although, Alchemy is working on a new music system which apparently let's you fade between different types of tracks. It looks cool but isn't out yet so I don't know how well it will work. On Foundry, the music controls are better out of the box than Foundry but still aren't too powerful. You can set up playlists and change between them. However there are modules that allow you to set a custom track per player or NPC, add layered music etc. so for your needs Foundry is probably the best option.
Having tried a handful of these, you've got solid recommendations. I appreciate the research time involved here - especially given more than one with that steep learning curve, so thank you for that! I've been using Harpy for my games lately, and I was curious if you wouldn't mind sharing a bit more of your opinion on that one.
Thank you for the kind words! Appreciate it! I felt that Harpy has an interesting angle with the 3D assets but currently it feels too complex to be useful for a simple scenario and lacking features like automation etc. to be considered for a complex scenario. I also had a very hard time just setting up a map, getting some characters in, and trying to do a round of combat. Granted, I only gave the VTT about 1 hour of testing time so it could be that once you get into it, things flow better.
@@DiceAndEasy That's entirely fair, Harpy's definitely not the best battle map out there. It's served me really well for more social games, though. As you say, there's no One Best VTT - having so many on the market is great in that you can get one that fits your table well, even if it can make it hard to shop around for the right one (and I like the way you grouped them in this video for GMs to see what's most relevant to them). Thanks again!
I am pretty new to this VTT approach for TTRPG. I am old school but the new reality forces new approaches. I am looking for something super simple so Owlbear/Discord seems to be the right combo for me. However, I have a question for you, how do you set your VTT nicely so you have the play zone in the middle and your player's video chat all around it?
Thanks for watching the video! It can definitely feel overwhelming when starting to look at VTTs. Regarding setup, what I do is I have 2 screens and on one screen I have my VTT (usually Foundry VTT) and on the other I have my Discord call. You are able to pop out a call in Discord so you can have it in a separate screen. If you would want the videos from the call to be in the VTT nicely, you would have to use a VTT that has in built video call functionality. Not all of them have that though and the quality of those varies wildly.
Great overview. I'm looking for a VTT that is easy to develop for (i.e. extend). I would like to add new rule sets. It seems like a lot of these don't do that?
One question I always ask is: how easy is it to record sessions? I only want sound (it's so I can write up the adventure) but supporting this doesn't seem to be a priority for any provider.
So, I looked into Alchemy cause the way you presented it looked awesome. But how exactly did you trigger that fire effect when casting Firebolt? Literally cannot find anything like that.
Im curious to know if you've tried D&D Beyond now they've released maps? It looks very simple to use. Im stuck between Roll20 and D&D Beyond as a group of brand new (and newish) players
I haven’t. I currently don’t want to give money to WotC due the past few years of their actions, and I can’t try the VTT without paying then so not going to be looking at it for now.
I had not heard of it before! From the looks of it, this one is fairly new which is probably why I didn’t run into it when I did research for this video early this year. Looks newt though!
So these were just my categories that I came up with after trying over 20 VTTs which included FGU. I found FGU very hard to use and expensive though I do understand that it is versatile hence why it didn’t make the cut.
love the video. but I found fgu way cheaper than roll20. u can usually find a one time gm subscription on sale for 50% or more off. which is half the cost of 1 year of roll20. also the modules are around the same price. fgu always has sales every week.
I haven't heard any official word on that but I wouldn't be surprised if WotC decides not continue licensing once the current agreements run out. I think WotC wants create a walled garden where they are the only option.
@@Ziplock9000 they already released the 2D VTT on DnD Beyond so we’re already there. They are attempting to fully cover the VTT market with it and the upcoming 3D VTT. Agreed that it's fine for basic use but for advanced use, there are better options. The Roll20 engine overhaul they are working on at the moment could make a huge difference to the VTT. Also, to their credit, they have been adding a lot of sorely needed features to the VTT in the last 2 years. I haven’t. I currently don’t want to give money to WotC due the past few years of their actions, and I can’t try the VTT without paying then so not going to be looking at it for now.

Roll20 is still my favorite. Foundry seems like too much.
@@GeekMasterGames Roll20 is definitely a lot more simple but not as versatile as Foundry
Thanks for the gift
You’re welcome!
I used OMM but now their shutting down, I don’t know which one to use because there was none quite like it
@@michaeltabares9749 yeah it was really unique 😭

Do you know charactersheetonline ? ;)
I had not heard of it before! From the looks of it, this one is fairly new which is probably why I didn’t run into it when I did research for this video early this year. Looks newt though!
@@DiceAndEasy Yes, it's very young and very promising! I hope you'll do a video on it one day! 😁
RIP One More Multiverse. :(
So sad that it's shutting down 😭
There was no mention of FGU. Was there a reason?
So these were just my categories that I came up with after trying over 20 VTTs which included FGU. I found FGU very hard to use and expensive though I do understand that it is versatile hence why it didn’t make the cut.
love the video. but I found fgu way cheaper than roll20. u can usually find a one time gm subscription on sale for 50% or more off. which is half the cost of 1 year of roll20. also the modules are around the same price. fgu always has sales every week.
VTT count? Anyone?
No hex grid?
I’m a square grid type of person
Are any of these good for pvp?
What do you mean by pvp?
Isn't Roll20 losing D&D licence soon?
I haven't heard any official word on that but I wouldn't be surprised if WotC decides not continue licensing once the current agreements run out. I think WotC wants create a walled garden where they are the only option.
Yeah, especially since they will soon(TM) have their own VTT @@DiceAndEasy
@@Ziplock9000 they already released the 2D VTT on DnD Beyond so we’re already there. They are attempting to fully cover the VTT market with it and the upcoming 3D VTT. On top of that they ended a publishing deal with one huge physical book distributer so they are clearly wanting to push more people to DnD Beyond.
Yeah, I'm just checking out 'maps' right now thanks.@@DiceAndEasy

Does OMM work with 3.5?
From what I remember it supports 5e out of the box with simple SRD content. You could in theory use it for 3.5e but would have to do some custom work.
ok thank you! :)@@DiceAndEasy

No TablePlop ; video instantly outdated.
It looks like Tableplop hasn’t been updated in almost a year. As such, it doesn’t meet the criteria of being considered for this video.
I just use photoshop with gridlines lmao
If it works, it ain’t stupid!
soooo just saw OMM is actually shutting down :(
Yeeaaahhh I saw it as well! So sad to hear it 😭
Bro I thought I was called on discord
None.
Roll20 is so mediocre, is fine for a free product but not to invest monthly fee or modules there.
Agreed that it's fine for basic use but for advanced use, there are better options. The Roll20 engine overhaul they are working on at the moment could make a huge difference to the VTT. Also, to their credit, they have been adding a lot of sorely needed features to the VTT in the last 2 years. I feel like their strategy and direction changed drasticallyabout 2 years ago and they have been improving the VTT ever since.
This Video needs definetly more Views🫶
Thank you! Share it with your friends who might be interested in VTTs!
Foundry. There. Made it easy for you.
