Waze, Escort, Google map. Washington/Northwest region winner by far is Waze. In conjunction with a radar detector is very effective to reduce the risk of speeding. Waze is used by most on the interstate's. Rural highways are detector only as of now. Another great video by Vortex Radar.
Great information. I just bought a Uniden R8 yesterday and installed and configured Highway Radar - amazing! My old Valentine 1 Gen 1 needed to be retired after 21 years and the new technology is great. I appreciate your channel, testing and tutorials. I'm an engineer and went back and forth trying to decide on which detector to buy and app to use. I think I made good choices with the R8 and Highway Radar. Thank you!
Google could easily do a better job with Waze and Google maps but they choose not to. Who knows why could be politics because you know these local governments are not a fan of these apps because it affects their revenue
About a year ago on our trip from AZ to East MT. I was running a Uniden R1 and had Google Maps open running NAV. Soon as we got to Utah, Google Maps started talking like crazy "There's a speed trap ahead" I had no idea that Google maps even had that function, it was surprisingly really accurate and dependable. Those alerts, in conjunction with my R1 really helped a lot!!!
I use Highway Radar, only when traveling on highways. I haven't had a reason to use it too many times so far but it's been useful. It even alerted me to an obstruction in the road before the driver in front of me even saw it (and I had the notification distance turned down so I have since turned it up). It's very noisy, though. It alerted very loudly of police far ahead of me. I'm sure with more use I could understand what causes the noise and tweak settings to reduce it. I'm also always running an R3. I once went on a road trip with it and it notified me of kA around a curve on the highway (before I knew about Highway Radar), very far in advance. Cop was sitting in the left shoulder, presumably trying to catch speeders.
Using Waze and window mount for several years now. Feels like cheating! I will not run fast with only one. The upgrade to having both is amazing. Only close to getting caught once in 3 years😀
I’m running Waze and a Uniden R7 in the panhandle of Florida and, between the two, it’s been pretty accurate. I can’t wait until the iOS version of Highway Radar is released so I can add an extra layer. As for google maps, I tried it and the reporting doesn’t seem to be available when connected to apple CarPlay (or maybe I just missed it). I agree that the interfaces in both google and Apple Maps look better than Waze but I keep Waze open instead so that I can glance at the map/notifications to see them earlier than the 0.5 mile set point. Great channel, thanks for all of the great information.
Thanks, another informative video! I have an issue with the "still there?" alert on WAZE, it disappears as soon as you reach the alert location. Frequently, I can't see if the threat is still there, until I'm right next to it and at that moment the alert message disappears. It would be better if they gave you a few hundred feet beyond the threat to react to the message. FWIW, I connect my RL 360c to my Android via Bluetooth running EL in the background. I use JBV1 in freestand mode with WAZE overlaid on it. I don't currently segment the RL 360c because I'm doing a 6 month test on which KA bands are used in my area (Tampa Bay), I'm keeping a record of every hit. I'll post the results on RD forum when the 6 month period is up (March). Thanks again!
I Run the Red line 360c and escort live and waze in the back ground. Let me tell you that waze has saved me numerous times when an leo is hiding and not using laser or Radar . And visa versa. Never run without these counter measures. Best regards.
I think your assessment is spot on. The only thing that wasn't mentioned is the fact that often I am needing driving directions at the same time I'm using jbv1 and my V1 gen 1 or Gen 2. So what happens is I end up running jbv1 because of its bells and whistles, I have to run Waze because of all the reasons that you mentioned, and then I end up having to run Google Maps for better directional guidance. Google Maps just seems to have much better algorithms for redirecting in traffic situations and also better guidance when directing around something like an unknown City. And as you mentioned the interface just seems to be a lot cleaner and better to follow if you're driving in a higher stress situation using the app for guidance. I would love to hear others response to this
I see your near Seattle too, so many police in that area we got state troopers, king county, Bothel, Shoreline, SPD, Bellevue just too name a few. Along I-5 South the cops sit in the exact same place each time time they are very predictable.
i use waze for all drives, navigating or without navigating in addition to running my R7. Waze is definitely more in use in my area and the ability to do different things with it is very helpful. The points thing on waze seems a bit weird nor do i understand how it works. But the police feature is heavily used in my area (western massachusetts). never had an issue with it
LOL I drive that bridge everyday. Looks like the buckman bridge in Jacksonville FL, and I see them everyday on both ends running Ka even though most traffic is doing 15mph over.
I use waze and jbv1 overlay with my v1g1. This video has opened my eyes to more though. I might have to try highway radar. Also definitely need to start messing with the jbv1 settings because I've never really explored them since I set them
I bought a Red Line Escort unit after my girl got a speeding citation going to Vegas from Utah. At the time I bought my unit Live had just been released. I have been running Live anytime I go on Long highways or when I get into rental cars. It has paid for itself many times over. Few times I should have had car impounded. Thx to Escort and Live to slow down just in time.
I run mine like you, Google maps for navigation, and Waze in the background for alerts and run a R7 detector. Waze around where I am isnt so consistent anymore over the past few years which is a bummer. Ive seen a few google map alerts but they have never been accurate.
Would be cool to see a follow up video on Apple Maps in about a year. I am curious whether you can tell Apple Maps to record a speed check alert using Siri and also whether the data actually becomes visible to other drivers, since you weren’t able to see that with the beta version. Regardless, I think the fact that it is an iOS-only solution inherently limits it and I expect to continue to use Waze.
One of my best friends is a Kentucky State Trooper... He laughs at using Waze and Google as the officer at the speed trap has Waze and Google maps open and taps that the officer is gone... I have iRadar and got 3 months free. It's nice but at $50 a year or $5 a month forget it...
I use google maps for navigation / general map - I run waze with spotify. The three integrate well with my head unit running Android Auto. I don't have a radar detector or laser jammer.
I’m a big techie! I love all my tech gadgets. I actually do end to end device testing. I use google maps for my navigation. I don’t get any police alerts. Also you can’t record a speed check, accident, etc when using CarPlay with google maps. You can also get the haptic feedback on your Apple Watch when using google maps. But that hasn’t worked in a while. It’s a bummer cuz i love that feature. I like apple maps . But… I noticed the turning lane indicator isn’t as good compared to google maps. Where google maps wi have both lanes displayed but the straight lane will be grayed out. I have gotten a few police alerts in apple maps. I notice apple maps use to be really bad at pin pointing my actual location. The arrow on the map will be about 700 ft behind where i actually was on the road. The nav would tell me to make a turn after i passed the turn. It’s gotten a lot better and it’s useable now. I still prefer google maps bc of the lane guidance and it alerts which lane to be in way before apple maps. I just recently downloaded Waze. I am liking it. I use it for everything besides navigation. . Great for knowing what is up ahead. It’s pretty spot on. I love seeing the list on my route if what is ahead and how far i am away from the alert . Also, thanks to your videos and website i bought a R7 from a guy on RDF. It is coming today. Really excited for it. This will be my first radar detector. I will be getting a lot of use out of it for the holiday weekend!!
In the uk radarbot is the best speed trap warning it alerts where historical traps have been even if not there at time of travel, very useful in case the present database isn't bang up todate. Plus it carries an audible warning announcing "potential speed trap ahead" allied to a count down meaning you don't have to look at the screen. Waze is a good sat nav and social networking tool for meeting prozzies but not as good for avoiding speed tickets
Waze algorithm also knows when a user is trying to false flag. Other users will alert just the opposite in case a stationary speed trap is trying to remove the alert.
Waze is good not great but next option so far. Somebody needs to make an app that detects police WiFi from they're laptops or radio frequencies after passing then reports all by itself....Game changer
I think the reason there aren't many alerts on Google Maps is because it's used by mainstream users. They aren't interested in radar detectors or similar things. They just drive along mindlessly and use Google Maps. If they weren't using Google Maps they'd be using Apple Maps. While these have a lot of users, the users are ordinary people who just don't have interest in this stuff.

How to waze when you're the only car on the road: tap the police button as you're driving by, but send the notification half a mile down the track so that they don't know it was you 🤣🤣
I have been using Waze, but ordered a Escort Max360c Radar Detector and may try that app. Will also download and try Highway Radar. As for Waze it works really well due to the highly populated area I am near (Washington DC). Works on highways as well due to the number of users. As you noted does not give you a lot of room to react. This is why I use the bear bait method a lot of time. Have someone go much faster than I do . So far so good. :)
any update on escort iCX model? not sure its worth it... price has shot back up to $450 on amazon and local retailers haven't done a fair sale on it in a while... reason im thinking of going with escort is laser shifters can be an all in 1 package...i like that concept. would be for my secondary car. my primary car i have an escort (just upgraded to 360C)+ shifters hardwired i installed to my grill and rear hatch area (two by in the rear and 2 by in front)..not sure perfectly aligned but saved my bacon a couple times in VA/NC (i know illegal in VA so wasn't set to JTG)...so i know in real world they can work against real police.
I wish Waze would add voice reporting for apple users using CarPlay. I don’t report a lot of stuff because I can’t without taking my eyes off the road.
As a big user of Waze I try to report only the important things which minimizes distractions. For hazards and police it’s only 3 touches. Once you’ve done it enough it’s easy not a big deal. I hope you can figure out a way to make it easier to report. We need as many people as possible doing it.
@@seashackf1 yeah, I’m not doing that out of principle. I don’t even look at the speedometer unless I get a notification for cops because what’s on the road is more important. Anything where I have to do so much as glance at unless it’s directions showing me how to get somewhere I’m unfamiliar with I consider a distraction. There have been many times where I unexpectedly had to react in a fraction of a second to avoid an accident due to terrible drivers and objects on the highway such as desks, office chairs, and metal ladders. So far I’m accident free for over 10 years of driving and I intend to keep it that way.
@@BimmerWon if it’s out of principle then shouldn’t you not use an app where others are doing the behavior you think is too dangerous to do yourself? You’re directly benefiting from others contributing to the app, but you refuse to respond in kind. If you’re that nervous a driver and have to be that focused on the road then having the app open itself is probably too much of a distraction for you. You probably also shouldn’t be speeding, otherwise it seems you’re just picking and choosing what’s too dangerous to justify your actions. Part of driving is assessing when it’s safe to do something and when it’s not. This is no different. You don’t have to do it all the time, just when it’s safe.
Wonder if Escort Live is stronger in any areas of the country. Seems like it would be a better countermeasure for night time radar traps where waze suffers. Also wonder if laser alerts are reported to Escort Live.
There was (and still is I'm sure in some states) a time where flashing your lights at someone to warn them of a speed trap (or presence of police) would get pulled over. As, as RD's are banned in Canada and VA, I'm very surprised they don't try and go after these apps as being illegal or something. Just sayin.
@@klugermann5806 Oh yeah. The "eqp check" defense. I have to check mine to see if they are on bright or not. The LEO might not buy that excuse but I'm sure a judge would.
Google Maps sometimes tells me I'm driving in the exact opposite direction to what I am. Not reliable. I've also seen it tell me to exit and go east, when there's only one exit and it goes west on a highway. At speeds over 30 mph it also can tell you to turn in 1/4 mile, when you are either 50 feet or 1/2 mile from the turn. It has accuracy or latency issues.
Top reviews, thank you Man! I want to ask you which the best dash cam with a budget of 250/300 $? Viofo a129 pro 4k - Vantrue N4 - or others to recommend in this time? Thank you.
@7:25 reason I don't like messing around with devices when driving. Red Dodge could have switched two lanes and brake for no reason which some drivers do when cutting lanes and could rear end the truck when muting or reporting a police officer.
WAZE is a NO GO for me. On my iphone I have to keep it in the fore front for the app to speak through the bluetooth / radio. I do not have to do this with the apple maps.
I use to only run Uniden R1 but got caught in Pennsylvania 3 years ago from the Sheriff running VASCAR (how’s that for kick in the head). Ever since then, it’s Waze + R1 for me.
VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder) is a time/distance computer used to time a vehicle between two reference points. The officer retraces the violator's path to measure the distance and the computer displays the average speed. For stationary speedtraps an officer can drive between two reference points and store the distance to memory. From a vantage point like a freeway on-ramp, he can then flick the Time switch on and off to measure the speed of passing vehicles. introduced in the mid Sixties and publicized little since its heyday in the Seventies, has made a quiet comeback in recent years. Police like it because it doesn't use radar or laser technology and radar detectors offer no defense.
You mention using either JBV1, Highway Radar or Waze by themselves, yet JBV1 auto loads Waze in the background when it starts on my setup. Should I turn off Waze?
I should have been clearer about not using JBV1 and Highway Radar at the same time. It’s okay to run Waze while also running just one of the third party apps.
Waze would be great if it wasn’t broken 😞! Cross country trip from Michigan to Arizona it only offers up 1 route. Then when you try to pull up alternate routes all it does is try to load and then errors out. Before you say oh because there is probably only 1 route, you’d be wrong! Avoiding tolls is what I want to do, google maps pops up 3 different routes to choose from! Waze 🤨
@@ncdogg425 Yes you are correct, problem is it only gives you one route and there are at least 2 others. When you try to bring out alternative routes it tries searching, times out then causes an error
@@ncdogg425 It is because of the long distance, Waze can't handle it. That has been a problem for a long time. That is why I have Waze look at shorter distances instead of the whole long route all at once when it gives me an error.
You’re right, but with Waze you can see the police spotted long before you get there, so as long as you’re scanning the app visually every few seconds you should have enough advance warning & see them before you’re too close, at least that’s been my experience.
Maybe just like for airplanes? Stratus or similar product? Not sure how this would help as you'd be able to see all adsb out airplanes and helis, not just pd.
I don’t know why this guy doesn’t have hundreds of thousands of subs-nobody does it better!

Sad that magic earth is not apart of this video with whatever shared dataset they use
about WAZE, affirmative on the cartoon DESC; Their prior look about a couple yr ago seemed better IMO
Great info!
I run Waze with my R7. Works for me.
Waze has saved my ass many times
There was (and still is I'm sure in some states) a time where flashing your lights at someone to warn them of a speed trap (or presence of police) would get pulled over. As, as RD's are banned in Canada and VA, I'm very surprised they don't try and go after these apps as being illegal or something. Just sayin.
I occasionally have to flash my lights to make sure they are working due to previous issues. 😉 Just saying yah know. Always trying to be safe! Lol
@@klugermann5806 Oh yeah. The "eqp check" defense. I have to check mine to see if they are on bright or not. The LEO might not buy that excuse but I'm sure a judge would.
Waze it is from now on. Thx.
Great information Vortex!!! One day we are going to neutralize 5 . 0
Top reviews, thank you Man!
I want to ask you which the best dash cam with a budget of 250/300 $?
Viofo a129 pro 4k - Vantrue N4 - or others to recommend in this time? Thank you.
Go for the Viofo for a better feature set, available rear cam, and stronger mount. www.vortexradar.com/best-dashcams/
@@VortexRadar thank you! 👍🏼
@7:25 reason I don't like messing around with devices when driving. Red Dodge could have switched two lanes and brake for no reason which some drivers do when cutting lanes and could rear end the truck when muting or reporting a police officer.
😂 the officer has a customer he wants to give a speeding ticket to 😂
WAZE is a NO GO for me. On my iphone I have to keep it in the fore front for the app to speak through the bluetooth / radio. I do not have to do this with the apple maps.
Thanks for the video sir
I run Highway Radar and Waze on a split screen on my note20
They just need one universal one... That would make it super solid!
I use to only run Uniden R1 but got caught in Pennsylvania 3 years ago from the Sheriff running VASCAR (how’s that for kick in the head). Ever since then, it’s Waze + R1 for me.
VASCAR?
@@guomondur9248 ouch..... That sucks!
@@guomondur9248 hang on a sec.... Can't it be argued that the officer could possibly turn it on and off at different points?
So, what is the conclusion?
Which is best adroid app if we don't have a radar scanner ?
Waze or Highway radar ?
Waze is the only waze not to get a ticket.
Hey vortex I just got a radar detector how do I know I need to update it or if it comes updated it’s a uniform r7
Uniden
I was wondering if you can test the uniden DFR1 radar detector? I can’t any range reviews on it. Thank you.
Low end detector and lacks important false alert filtering. In general I don’t devote time and energy to products like that.
I have the UnidenR7, I would like to update it, I am not real savvy doing this myself. Can I send it back to Uniden and have this done.
Dude. Buy a friend!🤣🤣🤣🤣
Read the manual? 🤷♂️
Escort 360c w/live and Waze Navigation
Thank you
As of August 1st 2024 what’s the best app for the Redline 360c thanks
Escort Live is being phased out in favor of Drive Smarter which is now the app to use.
In Vancouver BC, its Waze only here.
Can you get highway radar to pull from the escort live app and get that information displayed on the map or is it only ways
Hey can you repost the video
about the BSM frequencies creating false alarms on radar detectors
I’ve done many videos on the topic and am not sure what you’re asking about, specifically.
@@VortexRadar You posted the frequencies that specific car manufacturers BSM filtering will cause a radar detector false alert.
Does highway radar app require that Sabre thing to work? Cause right now it's confusing
Nope, it just adds extra functionality
You mention using either JBV1, Highway Radar or Waze by themselves, yet JBV1 auto loads Waze in the background when it starts on my setup. Should I turn off Waze?
I should have been clearer about not using JBV1 and Highway Radar at the same time. It’s okay to run Waze while also running just one of the third party apps.
What is that device you said so quickly that couldn't catch it. Something like a ADSB Receiver?
Yep, ADS-B
@@VortexRadar what does it do? I'm familiar with using scanners, but don't as much, due to scambling of the transmissions. How could a ADSB help me?
@@VortexRadar what does it do? I'm familiar with using scanners, but don't as much, due to scambling of the transmissions. How could a ADSB help me?
I would like to see school zones on all maps. I use waze
I love google maps. But you can't report speed traps via android auto. Big bummer.
Don't the police go into Waze and change that they are there?
can you please go over highway patrol app?
Waze would be great if it wasn’t broken 😞! Cross country trip from Michigan to Arizona it only offers up 1 route. Then when you try to pull up alternate routes all it does is try to load and then errors out. Before you say oh because there is probably only 1 route, you’d be wrong! Avoiding tolls is what I want to do, google maps pops up 3 different routes to choose from! Waze 🤨
When that happens, I end up chopping up the trip into several smaller distances because I want to use Waze. You make a good point.
That's odd cause in the Waze settings it allow you to choose roads with no tolls.
I love waze I never fail to report a cop I got my car armed with a passport radar detector plus Waze cops don't have a chance lol
Damn is speeding enforcement that serious in some states?!
We need a video about the R9 when will it be released?
When it is released, I'll do a video on it. My best guess is it's been delayed due to covid, like many other things.
@@VortexRadar I have a GTR that we can do testing with.
Currently have the R7 with blendmount just let me know
You can report police via jbv1? I thought it only pulled in data from other sources...
Look into Sabre :)
That half mile deal with Waze makes it useless, IMHO. That's inside the range of most radar units.
You’re right, but with Waze you can see the police spotted long before you get there, so as long as you’re scanning the app visually every few seconds you should have enough advance warning & see them before you’re too close, at least that’s been my experience.
any word on Radenso Theia availability to use these apps with?
Let’s do this people......Waze..!!!
Im curious about the ADS-B receiver now for car use.
Maybe just like for airplanes? Stratus or similar product? Not sure how this would help as you'd be able to see all adsb out airplanes and helis, not just pd.
I run jbv1 and wase with no issues
JBV1 and Waze
